What happened to the white iPhone 4?
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
It shouldn't come as much of a surprise, but Best Buy has just gotten around to confirming that it won't have any stock of the white iPhone 4 come launch day on Thursday -- the same situation that both AT&T and Apple itself are in. For many buyers, it's not a big deal -- either they don't mind the black version, or they'd planned on buying black anyway -- but for others, this is putting a significant crimp on the launch day festivities. We reached out to Apple and got this:
In other words, they're not revealing much of anything -- okay, scratch that, they're not revealing anything at all about its mystery-shrouded delay, the circumstances behind it, or how long we can expect to wait. So here's our question: what, exactly, happened to the white iPhone 4?"There is tremendous excitement for the new iPhone 4 and we are working to get as many of them into the hands of customers as possible. At launch, we have the black models available for purchase and we will be adding the white models as quickly as we can."What happened to the white iPhone 4? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 23 Jun 2010 06:48:00 EST. iPhone 4 pre-orders now shipping
Posted on June 20, 2010 | No CommentsWe're still trying to puzzle out the mystery of why some iPhone 4 pre-orders have been randomly canceled, but there's good news for the rest of the 600,000 people who managed to get past Apple's ordering issues last week: the newest iPhone is now shipping. We haven't gotten our ship notification email yet, but judging from our tip jar plenty of other people have -- we'll see if anyone's lucky enough to score an early delivery.

HTC EVO 4G performance capped at 30fps
Posted on June 11, 2010 | No Comments
The super spec'ed HTC EVO 4G has been taking a bit of a beating lately -- what with its woeful battery performance and exaggerated sales claims -- but this latest report falls on the far side of peculiar.
Users over at XDA are reporting that the framerate of the device seems to be capped at 30fps in both 2D and 3D modes. I say "capped" because a device with these kinds of specs should be hitting much higher framerates.

Unknown HTC Android phone appears, shrouded in mystery
Posted on June 1, 2010 | No Comments
For those that have only recently tuned in, the Android Guys have just unearthed photos of an upcoming Android handset from HTC, which they speculate to be the forthcoming HTC Aria.
As you'll recall, in last week's episode, we thought that the HTC Aria was the QWERTY phone spotted at the FCC some months ago. However, the phone here appears to be of the slate variety... so... where does this leave us?
Confused for a start, but no more than usual after a long weekend.

Global Verge wins $43 million lawsuit against mystery MVNO Zer01
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsWhen we first heard about Zer01 it was set to launch at a time when other MVNOs were disappearing. (Remember Amp'd Mobile, or Helio?) Zer01 was pledging unlimited voice and data for just $69.99 a month, before most other carriers had their $99 plans, but ultimately never delivered a thing. Apparently Global Verge was similarly left in the dark, but unlike you or I it had invested $170,000 in Zer01 in exchange for selling wireless services as part of its multi-level marketing company. Global Verge had been allowing its "e-associates" (people who pay for the right to hawk Global Verge's wares) to shill for Zer01 wireless, which of course never delivered a single call. There are accusations flying fast and frantic about which of the two companies is the worst offender here, but the District Court in Clark County, Nevada at least believes that it's Zer01 reneging on its promises, awarding $43 million to Global Verge for breach of contract and various other legal wrongdoings. Congrats, GV, and good luck collecting.Global Verge wins $43 million lawsuit against mystery MVNO Zer01 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 26 May 2010 08:18:00 EST. Mystery Motorola Droid (Shadow?) spotted with Verizon branding, set to be starting somethin’
Posted on May 22, 2010 | No CommentsWhy hello there... you. Over at the HowardForums, a certain "wnrussell" has uploaded a picture of what looks to be a Getting Started manual for a Verizon-bound Motorola Droid that we can't recall ever seeing before. There's unfortunately no other information provided at the moment, except maybe a hint from the filename: Shadow. Is this the same 4.3-inch phone we've been seeing rumored for some time now? At any rate, we gotta say, this is a pretty attractive device -- and if that's a new hue for Motoblur, we're all for it. Now how about pulling out a secret slide-out keyboard to make our lives complete...

Android 2.1 finally reaches 1/3 of Android handsets, just as 2.2 looms nearby
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsFor all of the folks who had to wait — and for all of those still left waiting — for Android 2.1 to be ported, smashed, tweaked, and OTA’d onto their handsets, the last few months may have seemed pretty unbearable. If it makes you feel any better, there’s a oh-so-dim light at the end [...] -
Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone to feature station caching, out ’soonish’
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsEver since Slacker Radio decided to flee the hardware business, we've been looking forward to bigger and better things from its mobile apps. If the hands-on that Dave Zatz got with the version 2.0 software for iPhone is any indication we won't be waiting in vain, either. The big news here is station caching: that's right, users will soon be able to store music for off-line access, whether you're listening on a plane or in a dead zone. Exactly how many stations (and for how long) you can store is currently a mystery, although the reviewer said it took about 20 minutes to cache six stations, with each one being good for at least a couple hours playback. In order to take advantage of this, you will need to purchase the Slacker Radio Plus package, and you'll have to wait for the app to be approved by Apple, which could be a couple days from now -- or it could be never, depending on Apple's mood.Slacker Radio 2.0 for iPhone to feature station caching, out 'soonish' originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 May 2010 11:29:00 EST. Confirmed: Apple and AT&T signed five-year iPhone exclusivity deal — but is it still valid?
Posted on May 10, 2010 | No Comments
digg_url = 'http://digg.com/tech_news/Apple_AT_T_had_a_5_year_iPhone_deal_but_do_they_still'; The term of Apple and AT&T's iPhone exclusivity deal has long been a mystery -- although USA Today reported a five-year arrangement when the original iPhone came out in 2007, that number has never been independently confirmed, and it's been looking suspect in recent weeks as Verizon iPhone chatter has gotten louder. But we've been doing some digging and we can now confirm that Apple and AT&T entered into a five-year iPhone exclusive in 2007, based on court documents filed by Apple in California. Clearwire to offer WiMax phones from HTC and Samsung this year
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No Comments
Whenever we talk about WiMax phones (like the oh-so-drool-worthy EVO 4G), we're usually talking about Sprint. Well, Sprint's WiMax is powered by a (not so) little company called Clearwire (which, in turn, is 51% owned by Sprint) -- and they want some WiMax phones of their own.
During an earnings call yesterday, the company disclosed that they're planning on launching at least two WiMax handsets this year -- one from Samsung, and one from HTC. One will be powered by Android.. and the other? Its a mystery!
