Epic Symbian^3 review published, notices it’s lagging behind

If you like detail as much as you like Nokias, then this news is going to make your day: Mobile Review have posted one of the most thorough overviews of an OS that I've ever seen. The OS in question is Symbian^3, Nokia's latest build of their tried-and-true OS, and the final Symbian OS to grace an N-series device.

N8 to be Nokia’s last Symbian-powered N-series phone, Meego FTW

Nokia's flagship phones, the N series, are about to undergo a change. The next in line, the N8, will be the very last N series device to run Symbian OS. From the N9 onwards, N-branded devices will run the Linux-Foundation-backed Meego.

Nokia N8 to be final Symbian N Series device, all MeeGo from here on out

Whoa. Nokia's premier range of devices, the N Series, will bid adieu to the Symbian operating environment and go MeeGo full time after the introduction of the N8. That's what we've just heard directly from the Finnish horse's mouth. Nokia will naturally keep Symbian around -- of course there's a whole Symbian^4 to come -- but will utilize it on more mass market devices as it seeks to push smartphones further down the product hierarchy. So it's not necessarily bad news, as such, it means we'll likely see Symbian trickle down to handsets priced more like featurephones and less like miniaturized laptops. What it does mean, however, is that Nokia is pushing forward with its modernization plans, and doing so more aggressively than previously thought. Which we consider to be a pretty awesome (and necessary) thing.

Nokia: Trust us, the N8 has a really nice camera

Nokia N8 first HD video sample from Nokia Conversations on Vimeo. After a heady excoriation of the N8 based on pre-release hardware surfaced this week, it looks like Nokia is trying hard to convince us that the N8 is still the phone to beat. Look: I love Nokia. I would even marry it if that were legal [...]

Asus has the first Nvidia Optimus laptops~!

Kudos, I guess, to Asus, being the first manufacturer to incorporate Nvidia's Optimus technology into actual products. The Taiwan-based company has announced five laptops (note: I refuse to use the term "notebook" when referring to laptops; I think the name "netbook" is dumb, too, so at least I'm consistent) that range in size from 13.3 inches to 17.3 inches, all of which use Optimus. "What is Optimus?" I'm glad you asked! It switches between the Nvidia GPU and the Intel integrated GPU as the situation warrants. So, using Firefox? Let the Intel handle it. Playing World of Warcraft? Nvidia takes over. It's not too hard to understand.

Fring gets Skype video chat support on Nokia devices

If we were to make a “Amazing ideas” list and a “Things that have totally failed to take off” list, there would be at least one item that you’d find on both: mobile video chat. Blame the carriers for not agreeing on a standard, or blame the consumer populace for not pressing hard enough; either [...]

  • Nokia abandoning S60 for Maemo on future N-Series devices?

Nokia abandoning S60 for Maemo on future N-Series devices?

Confused by Nokia's dual-platform, Maemo 5 and S60 5th Edition smartphone choices? You're not alone. Fortunately, things are starting to become a bit more clear thanks to some loose-lipped members of Maemo's marketing team attending an official N900 meet-up in London last night. According to The Really Mobile Project, Nokia will drop S60 from all of its flagship N-series consumer devices in favor of Maemo. Apparently, Nokia has been pleasantly surprised by the enthusiastic response to the N900 OS even though the enthusiast package is not quite ready for mass-market appeal. Mind you, the transition won't be instantaneous as anyone with an N900 (and a clear mind) can attest -- the OS, services, and apps just can't compare to the mature S60 platform regardless of Maemo 5's superior user experience. As such, we'll continue to see N-Series handsets already in development pop with S60 on board alongside mass-market Maemo devices as the platform matures to the point that Nokia can make the full switch by 2012. Assuming, of course, Nokia doesn't end up adding webOS to its portfolio somewhere along the way.

    [Thanks, Sockatume]

Intel no longer accepting Z-series Atom orders

intelIntel's apparently putting the kibosh on orders for its super low-voltage Z-series Atom processors. The Z-series chips can be found mostly in UMPCs and MIDs but had also made their way into various netbooks like the 12-inch Dell Mini series and the Acer Aspire One 751h, to name a few, as they provided a nice loophole to the "no screens over 1024x600 resolution" rule.

  • Why Nokia and Sony Ericsson are failing

Why Nokia and Sony Ericsson are failing

Fosfor posted an incredible look at what has befallen phone manufacturers and why they're all faltering. Mikael heeded over to Nokia and Sony Ericsson's sites and tried to list all of the models available. Nokia had 44 and S-E had 70. He then points out that there are three iPhones at best and in reality there are only two. It costs money to manufacture and sell things. While many of the phones on Nokia's site may be out of production, they still show them to users as if they were available. This is wrong-headed and ridiculous. The manufacturers will complain that carriers make them offer so many phones. Carrier A wants a cheap phone to sell to grandmas in Latvia while Carrier B wants a fancy phone to sell to the rich in South Africa. Cry me a river. Are we really that neophiliac that every country and every carrier has to have something a little different? Do we really have to bend our desires to what companies that essentially sell the transmission of bits over radio waves want?

Intel apparently backing off low-resolution netbook rules

vaioHot damn, netbooks are about to get a bit more useful. Apparently Intel has backed off on the whole low-resolution netbook screen thing. Previously, computers containing N-series Intel processors (Atom N270, N280, etc.) could only have screen resolutions up to 1024x600.

Sony netbook features hi-res screen, costs $500, coming next month

504x_vaiowbrown_01 When Sony launched the VAIO P, the company kept insisting it wasn't a netbook. Perhaps this is why: Sony has a netbook coming next month. An honest netbook, too, with an Atom CPU, Windows XP, and a maxed-out 160GB hard drive. Curiously, Sony appears to have been able to sidestep the "no screen resolution over 1024x600 when using an N-series Atom CPU" rule by offering a nice 1366x768 widescreen display.

Samsung has Nvidia Ion netbook plans

Samsung is about to break the mold with its latest netbook: It's going to have an 11.6-inch screen! On noes. Intel isn't going to like that as it breaks the company's so-called restrictions on netbooks. Anyway, according to DigiTimes, this netbook should come equipped with an Nvidia Ion platform paired with an Intel Atom N-Series CPU.
