Garmin-Asus Garminfone review
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsThe holy matrimony between smartphone and personal navigation device just keeps getting stronger, scorning dedicated GPS units like forgotten flings and leaving navigation-free handsets wandering lost and alone. Garmin-Asus has been flirting with the perfect bond with its Nuvifone series for some time now, but rather tragically from a branding perspective its strongest attempt yet comes without the nuvi moniker. It's the T-Mobile Garminfone, and its Android underpinnings go a long way toward making the best mix of PND and smartphone to date.

Bing turn-by-turn navigation for Windows Mobile gets taken for a test drive
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsMicrosoft certainly added all the right features to its Bing navigation app for Windows Mobile, but does it actually deliver the goods in real world use? It does according to the folks at PocketNow, who have put the app through its paces and kindly provided a quick demo video of it running on an HTC HD2. While there's nothing too shocking or surprising, it looks like the voice input works well, and the turn-by-turn directions seem to be at least up to par with your average navigation device -- it even has a few nice touches like being able to tap on the screen to repeat the instructions. Head on past the break to check it out the video and, if you're still unsure, you can always take the app for a spin yourself -- it is free, after all.

Garmin-Asus Echoes the Nuvifone A50 With Their Second Android Phone, The A10
Posted on April 28, 2010 | No Comments
Garmin-Asus today announced their second Android-powered phone, the A10 (for reasons unknown, they're seemingly not calling it a nuvifone).
Just like the nuvifone A50, the device aims to be a pedestrian navigation device (as in, for pedestrians, not a boring navigation device), and will come with Garmin's navigation software and maps pre-loaded.

CrunchDeals: Garmin nuvi 260W for $120

I’ve been eying these GPS deals pretty closely lately, as someone on my Christmas list is getting a nice shiny portable navigation device this year. This Garmin nuvi 260W is going for $120, today only, from Amazon. Best Buy has it for $140 and a handful of other places have it for $150 and up.

Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap
Posted on December 7, 2009 | No CommentsUnless you're talking about a carrier-branded solution like VZ Navigator, turn-by-turn nav is still a pretty rare offering on featurephones -- let alone low-end ones -- which makes Nokia's new 2710 Navigation Edition an interesting announcement. Billed as Espoo's "most affordable navigation device ever," the simple candybar features a digital compass, 2.2-inch display, 2 megapixel cam, FM radio, and the all-important 3.5mm headphone jack for those times when you're not blaring voice guidance over the loudspeaker. The company says we can expect to see this one launch both in developing and developed markets, one of the first times we've seen a nav-centric device cross over like that -- and at €110 ($163) unsubsidized, we can see the appeal. Look for it to ship in the second quarter of next year. Follow the break for Nokia's promo video.Continue reading Nokia 2710 Navigation Edition navigates, stays cheap

New Zealand law poised to ban GPS, e-mail, etc. on in-car cellphones
Posted on September 28, 2009 | No CommentsA well-meaning law, yes, but one that just misses the mark. I refer to, of course (as if you have any idea what I'm talking about), the Road User Amendment Rule 2009 in New Zealand. It would make it illegal to use a cellphone as a navigation device while inside a car.

TomTom and Garmin say standalone GPS devices ain’t licked yet
Posted on August 27, 2009 | No Comments
Standalone GPS devices are a dying breed. Anyone with a half-way decent smartphone can get from point A to point B with a few taps of an onscreen keyboard and it's abundantly clear that standalone devices will end up being the the province of old folks. That said, TomTom and Garmin are seeing roses and puppy dogs.

Is Sony really working on Android-based mobile devices? Most likely yes
Posted on June 8, 2009 | No Comments
Does Sony dream of Android? The Japanese web is currently filling up with rumors about Sony preparing not one but two Android-based mobile devices. Both the Android-powered Walkman and a personal satellite navigation device are rumored to launch next year.
I just checked all Japanese news sources I could find reporting on the topic and the short answer is that the rumor seems to be true.
