Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu, NEC jointly develop new mobile OS

Just last week, we asked the question if the world needs yet another mobile operating system (Samsung's Bada). Now it turns out Japan's biggest cell phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, apparently thinks the answer is yes. The telecom behemoth (55 million customers in Japan) today announced [press release in English] the development of a brand new "application platform for mobile phones", which is planned to go global, too.

NEC plans to ship 3D desktop PCs later this year

Virtually every Japanese tech company has made some 3D-related announcement in the past months, but one remained suspiciously quiet in that area: NEC. We covered their (apparently very cool) glasses-free 3D 12.1-incher last year (it's yet to be commercialized), and today NEC made some initial announcements about a 3D desktop PC that's supposed to hit Japanese stores by year-end.

REGZA 3D: Toshiba is now ready to sell 3D TVs, too

Toshiba organized a big press conference in Tokyo today, and the company did not only unveil a total of 15 new REGZA LCDs for the Japanese market. Perhaps more importantly, Toshiba also announced the development of a new 3D TV. It seems Toshiba can't afford to let Sony, Panasonic, NEC, Sharp and Hitachi be the only Japanese tech companies try to create a new business for themselves.

Sony, Panasonic, NEC and now Sharp: All of these Japanese tech powerhouses are playing the 3D game now, but what about Hitachi? The biggest (sales-wise) of them all has been working on a glasses-free 3D projection system and sells a 3D cell phone in Japan (pictured), but Hitachi has been relatively quiet in terms of 3D.
Today, however, Hitachi Displays announced [JP] the development of a new 3.1-inch 3D LCD, which is - you guessed it - specifically designed for mobile devices.

ViewLight: NEC announces four DLP projectors

NEC in Japan has announced [JP] a total of four new DLP data projectors today. The NP53J/NP54J/NP63J and NP64J are part of NEC's so-called ViewLight projector series. All of the new models offer XGA resolution (1,024×768), a contrast ratio of 1,600:1 and rather weak 0.3W mono speakers.

Under the agreement, NEC plans to integrate its handset division into a tie-up that already existed between Hitachi and Casio starting April 2010 (the begin of the new fiscal year under the Japanese business calendar). In the meantime, the companies involved decided on a name for the new venture: NEC Casio Mobile. The company's capitalization stands at a relatively modest $55 million, with NEC holding a 71% stake, Casio 20% and Hitachi 9%. And as I speculated in my previous article, that new company plans to enter the global market in a (relatively) aggressive way.

This is one of the reasons why I live in Japan and nowhere else: In order to get more people to donate blood, the Japanese Red Cross Society decided to skip juice and cookies and to go high-tech by using augmented reality-powered digital signage systems [JP] and cute anime characters.

iPhone nabs 46 percent of Japanese smartphone market, the tiny Japanese smartphone market

So you read a headline like "iPhone grabs 46 percent of the Japanese smartphone market" and the first thing you're likely to think is, "wow, Apple is really doing well for itself." Well, it is and it isn't. While it has made some considerable gains in the smartphone market at the expense of phones like Sharp's W-ZERO3 and the Willcom 03, it still hasn't gained nearly the same total mindshare or market share that it has over here. That's because "smartphones" as we know them are still a relatively small market in Japan, where carriers' lineups consist of a whole range of offerings including everything from mobile TV-equipped phones to true camera phones to perfume holders. For a bit more context, check out the pie chart after the break courtesy of IDC Japan, which shows cellphone vendors' market share in Japan as of October of this year. The leaders by a wide margin are Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu and NEC with a combined 72.8% of the market, while Apple is lumped in with "Others," which add up to 22.6%. Buffalo announces world’s first USB 3.0 ExpressCard adapter

USB 3.0 is slowly advancing, and Japan-based computer accessory maker Buffalo emerges as the leading company in its space. After having announced the world's first USB 3.0-powered Blu-ray burner just last month, they today unveiled the first ExpressCard adapter [JP] that's based on USB 3.0. The IFC-EC2U3/UC works with Windows 7 and Vista (32bit and 34 bit). It's also compatible to XP machines.
Buffalo explains that if your PC or digital camera has a USB 3.0 port, you'll get 5Gbps as the top data transfer speed. If not, the ExpressCard/34 offers just 480Mbps. It features two USB 3.0 ports and is based off NEC's USB 3.0 host controller.

PaPeRo: NEC’s cute helper robot

As a huge conglomerate, NEC is active in a lot of areas. But unknown to many people outside Japan, the company is quite aggressive in the robotics field, too. Their PaPeRo, a cute helper robot, for example, has been around since 1997 already. And now, just in time for a robot exhibition that currently takes place in Tokyo, the company shows an updated version of the little guy.

USB 3.0 is just around the corner (kind of), and the first computer hardware manufacturers are getting ready to deliver products supporting the new standard (even though there were some backlashes along the way). Last month, Asus announced the world's first USB 3.0 + SATA 6.0 PCI-E card. In May, NEC said they're going to release the first USB 3.0 host controller.

Blinking LEDs to give QR codes a run for their (ad) money

We're still waiting for this so-called QR code revolution to hit North America, but our contemporaries across the Pacific are already looking to develop the next big thing. Reportedly, a smattering of mega-corps (including the likes of Toshiba and NEC) are joining hands in order to concoct a rivaling technology that requires even less effort to get content from billboards, books and posters to one's mobile. The heretofore unnamed system utilizes blinking LEDs to send data to phones, and so long as an ad has enough room for a minuscule light, consumers can come within five meters of it and receive the associated information by simply pointing their handset in the direction of the light.
