Android Market is down, showing zero apps (update: fixed)

Look, we know that checking the Android Market for updates its a nervous habit during brief periods of downtime for many of us -- but for now, you're going to have to go back to chewing your nails or tapping your fingers on the table, because the Market's down. Well, that's only partially true -- you can still get into the Market app on your phone without any errors, you just won't see any apps in there, which renders it pretty useless by our estimation. Hang on, don't panic -- we imagine this won't last long.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: It's still down for us on a Froyo Nexus One, but if you take a gander through our comments section, you'll see that a lot of folks are having no trouble at all -- so it's probably based on your location, your devices, and your operating system. As far as we can tell, it's not restricted to Froyo since we've received a number of tips on the issue and we're hearing of some Droids that can't see apps. Keep the observations coming, folks!

Update 2: Google just reached out to us to let us know that it should be fixed and that the total outage was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minutes. They're apologizing for the inconvenience -- but with the Droid X being announced today, can you really hold a grudge?

DeHood Launches a Foursquare meets Twitter meets Yelp meets Ning for iPhone

When I was a kid, we used to play on the street in front of my house. Yeah, I know – seems like years ago. Nowadays, with children and families spending more time inside watching TV or playing video games; I feel like there’s nobody outside in my neighborhood anymore. In fact, most people don’t [...]

  • Rumor: Apple Thinking About Buying ARM. iPhone Rivals To Sleep With The Fishes?

Rumor: Apple Thinking About Buying ARM. iPhone Rivals To Sleep With The Fishes?

The following is very much a rumor, but if true, it would be absolutely huge. A UK publication is reporting that Apple is considering buying ARM Holdings -- aka, the company behind most of the world's mobile phone processors. If Apple were to buy them, it would likely reshape the mobile landscape completely. To be clear, London's Evening Standard is only citing "gossips" within the city's financial district. But those gossips aren't the only ones convinced there is something to this talk: ARM's shares went up 8.1 points today, with more than 5 million shares changing hands by midday, the paper reports. The deal, would apparently see Apple buying ARM for something in the neighborhood of 5.2 billion British pounds, or roughly $8 billion in U.S. dollars.

Look at that, someone (Super Talent) has finally thought to release relatively inexpensive SSDs

All the cool kids in the neighborhood are building their PCs with solid state drives these days. Who wants to use a plain old hard disk drive, what with its icky moving parts, when you can cruise along on a drive with zero moving parts? I mean, it's no contest. Problem: SSDs are usually what I like to call "mad expensive." You're paying a heck of a lot for a fairly small drive... until now~! Super Talent has a brand new line of "value" SSDs that are low-ish in price. It's all the benefit of an SSD without the incredibly high price. At least that's the idea.

North Korea develops its own Linux distro called Red Star OS

If you guys weren't terrified of North Korea by now, here's more evidence that the country is absolutely nuts: they've developed their own Linux distribution! It's called Red Star OS, and we can thank a Russian student for unearthing it for us. I now fully expect to see knee-jerk reactions like, "Down with Linux!" even though that makes no sense at all.

IFPI claims that music piracy is right up there with climate change. At least they’re not being melodramatic about it.

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry is sorta like a worldwide RIAA, representing record labels, artists, and musicians to make sure their agenda is always out there. That, of course, makes it pure evil. It just published its Digital Music Report 2010, which tries to detail the situation vis-à-vis digital music, piracy, and so on. The big, scary headline: music piracy is right up there with climate change as an issue of monumental, worldwide importance. Sure, OK.

Canon’s entry-level camcorders gain HD in the form of the HFR series

CES is here, even though most of your friendly neighborhood CrunchGear writers are still in their respective home states. (We'll be arriving in Las Vegas throughout the day today.) First up for me: new camcorders from Canon. Entry-level ones, too, so don't feel intimidated. You've got the HFR11, the HFR10, and the HFR100. They're basically souped up, HD versions of the previous FS series of entry-level cameras. Nothing wrong with HD.

Stable Android 2.1 hacked onto Droid, speeds through those extra home screens

Staying warm out there? Got a cup of hot cocoa in hand? Good, because Mr. Greek35T over at AllDroid has a stable version of the (previously rough-around-the-edges) Android 2.1 ROM ready for all you Droid users to play around with. It's officially "super fast," and probably the best thing to happen this weekend outside of that wicked jump you built on the neighborhood sledding hill before you went and watched Avatar with all your old high school friends. Hit up the source link for the full install instructions, and there's a video of 2.1 in action after the break.

    [Thanks, Brandon]

Greenpeace will be at CES cutting a promo on anti-green companies

I've inexplicably become CrunchGear's go-to green writer. If there's a “green” tech story out there, I'm on the scene. Why, I don't know, especially because my attitude toward the environment is, “Meh, I'm lucky if I hit 70 years old, what do I care?” Don't tell that to Greenpeace though. The activists made famous by that Seinfeld episode will be at next month's CES (as will all of your friendly neighborhood CrunchGear writers) to give the lowdown on what companies are green and what companies are a bunch of jerks.
