The new Roku Netflix experience adds search, Instant Queue modification features

Woot! Netflix for Roku's wee little box will be updated "soon" for Netflix subscribers, adding search functionality that the service badly needed. As you can see from this jaunty video, the entire UI has been improved and the standard "press left to see all of the other movies" is gone, giving you more movies per page and a considerably more streamlined experience. The best thing? You can now add movies to your queue from the box. Click through for a video and a bit more info.

  • AT&T On The iPad 3G Video Restrictions: “That’s something you need to ask Apple”

AT&T On The iPad 3G Video Restrictions: “That’s something you need to ask Apple”

Today in the U.S. people are getting their hands on the 3G version of the iPad for the first time. The hardware is supposed to be exactly the same as the WiFi-only version except, of course, it has a cell chip in it to receive data over AT&T's 3G network when you're not connected to WiFi. Since the hardware is basically the same, all the apps should function the same, right? Wrong. Reports are already coming in that some of the most popular iPad apps -- the ones that stream video -- are being restricted on the new iPad 3G. Specifically, the YouTube app scales videos down to a "dramatically lower resolution over the cellular data connection," according to iLounge. Worse, the ABC Player apparently won't work at all unless you connect to a WiFi network, as a pop-up message informs the user. But apparently iTunes Store streaming video previews are working just fine in full resolution. No word on the Netflix app just yet.

Surprise: Iron Man 2 nowhere near as good as the first one

That's funny. When I last wrote about Iron Man 2, I had guessed that Scarlett Johansson would be the only reason to see the movie, and it looks like I was right! The first review of the movie has been published, and it includes this: "Meanwhile, [Johansson] struts through the film in various stages of dress and undress, which might be the best thing about Iron Man 2 for its younger male fans." Other than that? The movie is hot garbage. Go figure.

Sony Dash Internet tablet now available. (Update: No it’s not. Awesome.)

People of Earth! The Sony Dash is now totally available. It’s a $200 Internet tablet that also lets you watch Netflix. Cynics call it a “Chumby clone,” but if you’re going to clone something you might as well clone something that’s universally beloved. Yeah, no… I totally blame John for this, but the Dash isn’t available [...]

DirecTV would like to remind you that they will have Avatar on time, unlike Netflix

We're starting to see the results of Netflix's deal with the devil. DirecTV really wants to make sure you know that while Netflix won't have Fox and Time Warner's movies at release day, they will be on PPV. Is that the sound of someone rubbing their hands together in a greedy way?

Subtitles starting to show up on Netflix instant viewing

There's always been a few annoying little issues left to be addressed on Netflix Instant viewing. I mean, you can't get 1080p, there's not 5.1 sound, and most importantly, there's no subtitles. As someone show has family members with hearing disabilities, I've been keenly aware that Netflix has been lacking in that regard. There's good news though, Netflix has been working on that particular issue, and just started rolling it out to the public.

Netflix comes to the Nintendo Wii

Officially official (as opposed to rumored, I suppose): You can now stream Netflix on your Nintendo Wii. You can only stream in standard definition, so if that matters to you… Oh, and you’ll need to request a streaming disc, à la the PS3, in order to stream content. That’s about it.

What would you even do with a 100 mbps Internet connection?

About a year ago I signed up for Cablevision's Optimum Online Ultra, and aside from a little snafu that I'm trying to fix right now (don't ask!), it's been great. How could you go wrong with a reliable 100 mbps down/15 mbps up connection? Only $100/month, too. Other ISPs are getting close to offering similar speeds, thanks to Docsis 3.0, but some people are wondering: will people even need that sort of speed, and if so, then for what?
