Consumers Put 3D TV to the Test
Posted on June 16, 2010 | No Comments
By Sean Captain, Technologizer
We’re hearing a lot about 3D television these days– from TV manufacturers, directors, journalists and pundits. But do consumers like it? And will they pay for it?
To find out, I convened a mini focus group of adults in their 30s, 40s, and 50s,; a teenager; and a pair of kids under 10. We met at the Samsung Experience store in New York City a few weeks ago. After watching a wild assortment of clips–from The Daily Show to a Dunkin Donuts commercial to Monsters vs. Aliens–they had a mildly favorable impression. But no one was jumping up to buy a new TV and a pile of expensive active-shutter LCD glasses.
Since then, ESPN launched its 3D service with the World Cup. So I went back to watch the high-end sports coverage and talk to more folks.
Everyone, on both occasions, found something to like. For a few it was sports—the World Cup and a basketball game. Others went gaga for Transformers 2, and one spectator really did enjoy the commercials. The viewers didn’t unanimously like any particular clip, however. And while younger folks were sometimes more enthusiastic, the adults were bigger fans at other times. No one wanted to shell out for the experience at home.

The “Get a Mac” Ads are gone
Posted on May 21, 2010 | No CommentsFriends, it happened. Those long-running ads featuring John Hodgman and Justin Long as PC and Mac, are over. They have been replaced by the “Why you’ll love a Mac” page featuring pictures of Macs and a number of roll-over peans to Mac’s greatness including “It’s designed to be a better computer” and “It runs Office [...] -
Sharp announces world’s first four-primary-color, super-bright 3D LCD
Posted on April 12, 2010 | No Comments
We all know Sharp is particularly strong in the LCD panel space, which means it's not a big surprise the company is the first to announce a 3D LCD with four base colors (Sharp has added yellow to the usual trio of red, green and blue). The company also claims the new screen is about 80% brighter than conventional models, boasting the highest brightness in the industry.

Sony reminds us of the high-cost of first generation 3D TV
Posted on March 9, 2010 | No Comments
3D TVs are coming whether we want them to or not. TV makers and content providers aren't testing the water - they're jumping head-first and pulling consumers in, too. But like high definition a few years back, early adapters will be forced to pay a high premium and suffer through a format war of sort before it really catches on.
Take a look at Sony's just-announced 3D lineup: The company announced eight 3D BRAVIA TVs for the Japanese market along with a set of necessary 3D accessories, which will compete against Panasonic and Samsung sets when they all eventually hit the market in the coming months. Nevermind that the US models might be slightly different. Let's talk about the multiple steps needed to watch 3D content on your brand new 3D TV.

If you’re going to buy an HDTV, why do you still keep using standard-definition sources?
Posted on December 11, 2009 | No CommentsThis is definitely a case of preaching to the choir, but perhaps you have friends and/or family members in need of support. A survey just came out in the UK that says that while 56 percent of households have an HDTV, 91 percent of them still use standard-definition sources. That is, even though Mum and Dad have shelled out £900 for a 40-inch 1080 LCD, said TV is still connected to standard-def Sky box or plain ol' DVD player. What gives? Why spend the money on a new TV if you're not going to use it?

Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)
Posted on November 23, 2009 | No CommentsNow look, we're not saying we know for sure that Apple thinks Verizon's latest round of merciless attack ads on its device and US carrier are worth responding to, but these latest iPhone spots would certainly suggest it. A new campaign launching tonight focuses on the iPhone's ability to carry voice and data simultaneously on AT&T's network, and each of the two new TV spots ends with the line "Can your phone and your network do that?" From where we're sitting, it looks like between this new round and AT&T's Luke Wilson-manned comparison spots, both the phonemaker and carrier are fully stepping into the ring. Way to get their attention, guys. See the full clips after the break.Continue reading Apple hits back at Verizon in new iPhone ads (video)

California approves new TV energy regulation: Energy consumption to be cut in half by 2012
Posted on November 19, 2009 | No CommentsLooks like California approved the new energy standards for televisions. The Consumer Electronics Association is predictably upset, whinging on about “constraining” innovation and choice, while environmental groups are predictably thrilled. The state's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, hailed the decision, and said that it will make California a “world-leader” in “the fight against climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”

Buffalo mayor beats the trousers off his opponent by promising new flat screen TVs to seniors
Posted on September 16, 2009 | No CommentsWhat's the best way to ensure that you win the Buffalo mayoral primary? Why, by promising an entire voting bloc brand new flat screen TVs! Byron W. Brown just won the Democratic primary (he's unopposed in November, so this victory means he just won the mayorship), and you can see him here (around the 50 second mark) promising to help seniors out by installing a new TV.
