Live from Verizon’s “Next Generation of DROID” Droid X Announcement
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No Comments
Whether we're talking about the EVO-challenging Droid X or the QWERTY-sliding Droid 2, Verizon's had one hell of a time keeping the latest additions to their Droid lineup under wraps lately.
Of course, just because some of the juicier details have already spilled out doesn't mean Verizon won't make a big fuss when they're ready for it to be officially official. They'll be be pulling back the curtains on what they're calling the "Next Generation of DROID" in just a few minutes -- and, as usual, we'll be there to cover it live.

Nintendo 3DS graphics chipset revealed
Posted on June 21, 2010 | No Comments
While Nintendo is normally very closed-mouthed about the actual hardware used in their systems, there has been some news recently about the graphics chipset used in the 3DS. You might be surprised to find out that it's not your typical NVIDIA Tegra, but instead some new PICA200 chip (yes, PICA, hold your giggles to the end please).

Verizon makes the Droid X official a few days earlier than expected
Posted on June 17, 2010 | No CommentsThe Android arena is a tough one to play in, man. One manufacturer might have the baddest handset on the block one week, only to have the competition release a superior monster-of-a-phone a week later. The rate at which these things are being cranked out doesn’t give the carriers — or their customer — any [...] -
Motorola, Verizon announcing ‘next generation of Droid’ on June 23
Posted on June 15, 2010 | No CommentsWe don't know whether this is going to be the Droid 2, the Droid X, or both, but Motorola, Google, Verizon, and Adobe -- yes, Adobe -- are all getting on stage out in New York on the 23rd of the month to announce some new Android gear. Should be exciting, so keep it locked -- because naturally, we'll be on-hand for all the festivities.Motorola, Verizon announcing 'next generation of Droid' on June 23 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jun 2010 16:18:00 EST. Samsung teases next Android announce, Galaxy S bound for T-Mobile next month?
Posted on June 8, 2010 | No CommentsIt's no secret that Samsung wants to spread its high-end Galaxy S far and wide, but the exact details of its US attack have been a mystery thus far. TmoNews is reporting a "trusted source" as saying that the phone is pegged for a launch on T-Mobile on July 21, which matches up with some chatter we've been hearing as well. Though T-Mobile's been supporting Android as aggressively as any carrier in the world, the company lacks a hero device -- something akin to the Droid Incredible or EVO 4G -- so it would stand to reason that Samsung's best Android gear to date would be a good fit over there. Nothing wrong with a Super AMOLED display in a sub-10mm shell, now, is there? In the meantime, we've been invited to an event on June 29 to see "the next generation in Android smartphones" from Sammy, so we're hoping for some more details then -- and naturally, we'll be on hand.Samsung teases next Android announce, Galaxy S bound for T-Mobile next month? originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 20:02:00 EST. Nikon D4x concept looks boxy, unlikely
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No Comments
Nikon's next generation D4x should be arriving in the next year or so, and it's always fun to speculate what it will look like. I doubt this is even close, honestly. It is fun to see what industrial designers can come up with when they play though. Keep in mind this is not a actual Nikon design, but rather a speculation on what direction they could go in.

Fourth generation iPhone teardown reveals A4 microprocessor
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Commentsvar digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/iPhone_4G_teardown_reveals_A4_chip'; See the marking on that chip with the Apple logo. No, not the "N90" codename indicating that it's from Apple's next generation GSM iPhone, the other text. If we're not mistaken then we're seeing "339S0084" on that chip from today's fourth-generation iPhone teardown. Guess what? According to Chipworks, that's the Apple A4 microprocessor fabricated by Samsung and the presumed work of Apple's acquired PA Semi and Intrinsity engineers. The "APL0398" text is also the same as that found on the iPad's A4 system-on-chip. The other markings differ however. What that means isn't entirely clear yet but we're digging.Fourth generation iPhone teardown reveals A4 microprocessor originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 May 2010 06:14:00 EST. Next generation iPhone unscrewed from Vietnam (update: video!)
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Commentsvar digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Next_generation_iPhone_escapes_in_Vietnam';The kids at Taoviet have really outdone themselves. From the looks of these images, the Vietnamese site has nabbed an honest to goodness 4th generation iPhone -- a 16GB model to be exact. It's clearly pre-production judging by the XXX placeholders on the backside stamp and likely lacks any OS other than a "Bonfire" test routine. Nevertheless, it looks authentic enough that we expect Apple's henchmen to be busting down the guy's door before he pries it open to reveal Apple's chipset of choice. A few more pics in the gallery.
Update: We've spotted a difference from this model and the unit that Gizmodo bought. Notably, the pair of screws at the bottom of the device are gone. The cleaner design could indicate a newer prototype (closer to the actual retail model) though both the iPhone 3G and 3GS went to market with a similar pair of screws. Comparison shot after the break.
Update 2: Oops, too late Apple, teardown pics added showing an Apple branded processor. Note the black "N90" text on the white sticker -- that's the rumored internal codename for Apple's next generation GSM iPhone. Yeah, that looks like the A4 processor to us.
Update 3: Video! Unfortunately, this sucker's never going to boot to the OS. And if the translation in our comments is correct then the unit was purchased for US$4,000.Continue reading Next generation iPhone unscrewed from Vietnam (update: video!)

MU Interactive Table: You know, for kids
Posted on May 11, 2010 | No Comments
So this thing, called MU, is a "multi-media installation" that shows kids some kind of music and fairy tale thing that teaches them "hearing, musical, and creation." Now kids need computers. Amen. But what they don't need is computers teaching them "hearing, musical, and creation." They "hear" every day, they can play music with a bucket and a stick, and they can create with crayons. They don't need computers.

Toshiba unveils 21-inch, glasses-free HD 3D display
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No Comments
We're about to get yet another 3D display. This time, it's Toshiba Mobile Display Corp. that's prepping such a screen, an autostereoscopic (glasses-free), 21-inch 3D HD display "for use in next-generation 3D monitors", to be more exact. Toshiba says the main selling points is that its new "integral imaging system" with 9-parallax design makes it possible for users to view 3D images from a wider range of viewing angles.

Sharp, Panasonic, Fujitsu, NEC jointly develop new mobile OS
Posted on April 26, 2010 | No Comments
Just last week, we asked the question if the world needs yet another mobile operating system (Samsung's Bada). Now it turns out Japan's biggest cell phone carrier, NTT DoCoMo, apparently thinks the answer is yes. The telecom behemoth (55 million customers in Japan) today announced [press release in English] the development of a brand new "application platform for mobile phones", which is planned to go global, too.
