    Hey, just because Apple won't make one doesn't mean you can't have a 4.3-inch iPhone. This here product of Chinese ingenuity offers you as much real estate as "the king of HTC HD2" while also throwing in both digital and analog TV tuners into the mix. When you factor in the dual SIM compatibility, 2 megapixel camera, WiFi, and removable back cover, it's enough for anyone to agree that "even a popular niche iPhone 4G had to step aside!"

    We like ZodTTD. He's a dude who just gets stuff done. Back in the early days of iPhone jailbreaking, he found his niche in building emulators for the platform; within months, he'd ported over pocket friendly versions of the SNES, Genesis, N64, Playstation, while somehow finding time to build things like an iPhone version of the VLC media player. Now, after much demand by his fans, he's building things for Android. His first project? An as-of-yet unnamed Playstation emulator.

    Watch phones clearly haven't hit the mainstream yet, though a resurgence of Dick Tracy may very well turn that around. Given that we're probably years, if not centuries, away from that happening, it's up to niche import shops like Alibaba to bring us goods like these. The GPS 800G -- delivered by none other than Shanghai Zhiyuan Vacuum Electric Company, of course -- manages to handle time telling, texting, GPS routing and even emergency calling. Oh, and normal calling as well. Looks as if you'll need to ping the supplier in order to get a lock on pricing, but we can't say with a straight face that it'll be worth your while.

    We could be looking at the end of RadioShack, boys and girls. The company is said to be exploring a strategic partnership, or outright sale, possibly to Best Buy. I don't see why Best Buy would be interested: what does RadioShack sell that's either A) not already available or B) entirely too niche for its Wal-Mart approach to selling consumer electronics?

    It looks like Tokyo-based acessory maker Thanko is trying to carve out a new niche for themselves, spy gadgets (apart from insane USB gadgets). The newest addition to their spy equipment lineup is the LED Spy Light HD [JP], an LED flashlight that records video in HD. Needless to say, the device lets you shoot photos, too.

    PHS is in a bit of a pickle right now -- the niche wireless standard has no path for technological growth, has just a handful of supporting carriers around the world, and frankly, was never intended for wide-area deployment to boot. That leaves Japan's PHS-powered network, Willcom, in the lurch, which explains why they've recently hooked up with HSPA giant NTT DoCoMo to launch modern data devices. Mooching off someone else's network isn't a long-term strategy for survival, though, so what's next? Reports are flying in Japan today that rival SoftBank may look at scooping up Willcom's assets in exchange for its debtors waiving some percentage of its $1 billion in IOUs; what SoftBank would ultimately do with that extra spectrum is unclear, but presumably they'd continue to run PHS for some predetermined period of time before transitioning it to HSPA or LTE. Of course, Willcom has a rep for releasing wild devices that avoid the beaten path set by its larger rivals, so here's a preliminary word to the wise, SoftBank: if you make this happen, keep the product people on board.

    According to this weeks issue of Amateur Photographer, Canon will not be attending PMA 2010. The company is apparently shifting focus away from niche trade shows in order to focus shows like CES that reach more consumers. After all, that's the way Canon's products are going anyway. We've seen a huge shift in the last five years as the DSLR has moved from the prosumer market to clearly an everyday Joe-type camera. Sure, there will always be high-end products which could be showcased at shows like PMA, but money is tight for everyone including the photography giant and so they need to focus on shows with the furthest reach.
