Toys (backwards R) Us Black Friday ad
Posted on November 15, 2009 | No CommentsI have no backwards R key on my keyboard and I don’t have the wherewithal to figure out the tricky Wingdingy ALT+numpad+four digit code voodoo it’d take to produce it (if it’s even possible), so let’s just say “Toys R Us” and enjoy the store’s Black Friday ad. Stores open at midnight – yes midnight – [...] -

Console Wars: The Effect Of Price Cuts On The Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3
Posted on November 4, 2009 | No Comments
While the Nintendo Wii continues to have a stranglehold on console sales, both worldwide and in the United States, the Xbox 360 and PS3 are battling it out for the the second place position for year-to-date sales. Just a little over two months ago, Sony announced that they would be slashing the price of their game console, the PS3, to $299. Microsoft quickly followed suit, and in just ten days dropped the price of their most expensive console, the Xbox 360 Elite, to $299. Nintendo, who has sold nearly double the number of consoles worldwide as these two, decided to lower the price of the Wii on September 27th to $199: this was the first time since its inception that the Wii has had a price cut. All three console manufacturers hoped that the decrease in price would help them to increase sales and finish the year on a strong note. The results have been mixed: while all three consoles have seen an increase in sales, the PS3 has seen astonishing growth in the US and abroad, and has wrestled the second-place position in worldwide YTD sales from the 360. As for the Xbox, even in its upgraded Elite form it has seen only minimal gains since the price drop.

QVC selling Wii bundle for $80-$140 more than you ought to pay
Posted on November 2, 2009 | No CommentsI think we've learned something today: not to buy stuff off the TV. QVC was selling, last night, a Nintendo Wii, Go Play Circus Star Games, and a bunch of accessories (golf club, tennis racket, etc.) QVC wanted $362.97 for the bundle, but if you look at the retail price for all this, it comes out to $239.97. Yes, that's a $140 premium. For what?

Biggest Loser fitness game now available for Wii and DSi
Posted on October 6, 2009 | No Comments
Announced back in May, The Biggest Loser is now officially available for the Nintendo Wii and DSi platforms for $40 and $30, respectively, bringing the grand total of fitness games on the market up to seven billion and one.
Developed by THQ, the game mimics the experience of being on The Biggest Loser Ranch just like the TV contestants, except that you get to live in your own house and you can keep eating delicious donuts with reckless abandon -- it'll be our little secret.

Finnish startup throws small ball at gaming console giants (video)
Posted on October 4, 2009 | No Comments
Yours truly was in Finland most of last week, visiting a bunch of technology startups at their offices, paying a visit to Nokia's research center and attending the great MindTrek conference (thanks again for organizing the tour, FinnFacts).
One of the items in the packed schedule was a visit to the Demola facilities, essentially a type of incubator where students from the three universities in the city of Tampere and beyond can come work on projects in an 'open innovation environment'.
One of the demos there that made a lasting impression on me - and the other bloggers who were invited to the tour - came from startup Ball-it. The fledgling company markets a golfball-sized device that is able to interact with your computer, TV or mobile phone thanks to physical wireless sensing technology that was popularized in large part by the Nintendo Wii gaming console. The technology has been under development for quite a while; tech blog Venturebeat profiled Ball-it about 10 months ago.

You’re worth it: How the “premium” perception is changing the way we buy gadgets
Posted on September 28, 2009 | No CommentsThis guy was asking the quality question way before the PSP Go The PSP Go just launched and the blogworld is in a tizzy about the price – $249 – and the apparent chintziness of this new PSP replacement. One million PS3 Slims sold worldwide since its launch
Posted on September 24, 2009 | No CommentsFinally, actual PS3 Slim sales numbers. Before all we had were percentages—sales up 300 percent over last week, that type of thing. Anyhow, Sony sold one million PS3 Slims since its launch back on September 1. That's worldwide, mind you.

Sony may get exclusive Dreamcast titles
Posted on September 22, 2009 | No Comments
The year was 2002. Two friends and I had just finished moving into a swanky three-bedroom affair a block away from Lake Calhoun in the trendy Uptown area of Minneapolis. Upon waking up after a blowout house warming party with what seemed like 500 of our closest friends, I found my SNES, Genesis, and Dreamcast covered in beer and orange juice. I haven’t felt complete since that very moment. If you could punch someone’s soul, that’s how it feels.
Now it appears that Sony’s “currently in discussions to bring a number of Dreamcast titles exclusively to PSN,” according to MCV.

Square Enix doesn’t think too highly of all this motion control nonsesne
Posted on September 21, 2009 | No CommentsIt's been about three years since the Nintendo Wii was first released here in the good ol' USA. Its number one claim to fame, motion control, sure isn't unique anymore, what with Project Natal for the Xbox 360, and whatever Sony's improved motion control thing is called coming out fairly soon. But are these motion control deals mere gimmicks (I think so, just based on how I play game; the public may well think differently), or something more? “Gimmicks!” yelled Square Enix's Yoichi Wada.
Next time you're at Sports Authority applying for a hunting license, you could pick up replacement Wii Remote or even the
