  • Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

Apple is now Nintendo’s biggest problem

The last time Nintendo took a big hit in profit, it resulted in the development of perhaps the most successful video game console of all time in the Wii. What's Nintendo's response going to be this time around? Yes, the big N has seen its profits drop from $3.03 billion to $2.48 billion—still a fair a bit of money perhaps to you and me, but cause for panic in the house that Mario built. While a traditional rival, Sony (with the PlayStation), was responsible for the previous rough patch, this time it's Apple. Will Nintendo allow the iPhone to push it around?

Operating profit dropped 36% to $3.8 billion, while net profit - for the first time in six years - dropped to $2.4 billion, compared with $2.9 billion a year earlier.

The US might finally get the black Wii

Okay, this isn't even funny anymore. Why the hell isn't the black Wii available in the states? It has been available in Japan for almost nine months and about six months in Europe. That's just crazy. Previously Nintendo even stated that it had no plans on releasing a Wii in any other color besides white in America. But that stance might have changed.

The goal here is to get the system to market prior to the Christmas shopping madness.

Judge: Nintendo did not infringe on Wii Classic Controller, Wiimote

A company called Anascape, Ltd. sued Nintendo in 2008 for infringing on their patent for a controller similar to the Classic and Wiimote controllers. For the Nintendo 3DS? Hitachi develops glasses-free, mobile 3D display

Sony, Panasonic, NEC and now Sharp: All of these Japanese tech powerhouses are playing the 3D game now, but what about Hitachi? The biggest (sales-wise) of them all has been working on a glasses-free 3D projection system and sells a 3D cell phone in Japan (pictured), but Hitachi has been relatively quiet in terms of 3D. Today, however, Hitachi Displays announced [JP] the development of a new 3.1-inch 3D LCD, which is - you guessed it - specifically designed for mobile devices.

This is either the Nintendo 3DS or an over-the-top mock-up

We’re not sure what to make of this thing. On one hand the design is clearly out of the box in a way Nintendo tends to think, but the twisting and turning seems just a tad too far from the norm to be real. But the Japanese site says it’s the real deal so it [...]

This Nintendo 3DS concept looks like a DS and PSP offspring

We've always admired the PSP's sleek exterior, but loved the DS's fun games. We're weird like that. But maybe, although it's highly unlikely, the next DS incarnation will combine some of the PSP's trademark style with the DS's functionality. If so, the 3DS would probably look something like this concept art.

Heaven forefend! Has Nintendo’s 3DS announcement killed the DSi XL?

NOT FOR KIDS! In all honesty, I don’t think the DSi XL is part of Nintendo’s standard line-up. It’s a reaction to the popularity of the Wii in retirement centers and is aimed at a much older – and much different audience – than the new 3D DS, aptly named the 3DS. Older folks who may [...]
