Sony burns Air Force by killing Linux on the PS3

Remember that 2,300 unit PS3 order that the Air Force put together to build a supercomputing cluster? Well, file this one under "unintended consequences" because when Sony killed the "other OS" option on the PS3 they definitely made things difficult.

  • For $3,400: Bandai to sell 1.5m tall Gundam figure

For $3,400: Bandai to sell 1.5m tall Gundam figure

No doubt, Gundam is Japan's favorite anime. They opened a Gundam Cafe in Akihabara, they erected a 1:1 scale Gundam statue in Tokyo bay, and they keep offering tons of Gundam-powered stuff on a monthly basis. The 1/60 Gundam statue replica (30cm) we showed you last November, for example, wasn't bad, but today Bandai unveiled something even cooler: a Gundam model that stands an impressive 1.5 meters (5') and weighs 35kg.

Android 2.2 to feature USB + WiFi tethering as standard

Our motherblog, TechCrunch, found out today that the Froyo-flavoured (and bloody fast) Android 2.2 will feature USB and WiFi tethering as standard. This will give users the ability to access their phone's 3G connection by either physically connecting the phone to their laptop external-USB-modem-stylee, or over a temporary WiFi access point beaming out from within the phone's magical inner chamber.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G coming June 4th; new plans detailed

We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know when until now. Sprint just let us know that the HTC EVO 4G is arriving on June 4th. I gotta have one. Pricing is set at $199.99 with new contract (after you get that $100 rebate, anyway), no doubt significantly more without one. The plan they’re [...]

  • The official Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 commercial shows off the dummy proof interface

The official Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 commercial shows off the dummy proof interface

There's no doubt that the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 are hot cameras. They mate interchangeable lens with a very slim body that houses a low-noise 14.2MP sensor. But apparently the user interface has been reworked to be a lot more user friendly. We first got wind of this yesterday when the NEX-3 leaked, but now the official commercial gives us a quick taste of the interface. (0:15 mark) We definitely like what we're seeing. This camera is bound to be the coolest kid in school.

iCitizen 2010: Dinosaurs in your phone?

While I was recently attending the iCitizen 2010 Symposium, Noora Guldemond, Head of Marketing at Metaio—a company focused on developing Augmented Reality experiences—showed me a few recent AR examples her company developed. This Jurasic Park example curiously doesn’t have the usual black and white “target” that I normally recall seeing in many AR demos. In [...]

WePad is now called WeTab – under pressure from Apple?

Neofonie, the German company behind the much-hyped iPad rival WePad, has changed the name of its tablet computer to WeTab, in a surprise move. The company has announced the name change on its Facebook page, stopping short of explaining why. We have a sneaking suspicion a certain computer and smartphone maker based in Cupertino has something to do with it, though.

  • ‘Black’ HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out in a flash

‘Black’ HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out in a flash

We'll be perfectly honest with you: we're not seeing what's "black" about the front of the Desire that Orange UK is now selling, but it insists that the phone is indeed devoid of color; we suspect they're actually just referring to the back, for which the description seems more accurate -- but that would make it no different than any other Desire being sold around the world. What does that mean? Basically, we think it means these guys need to get their eyesight checked. Spec-wise, this is the same Desire you'll find elsewhere... if you can find it, that is -- it sold out in short order on Orange's site since its launch a few days ago, no doubt a side effect of the customer euphoria caused by the realization that they can get a 1GHz Snapdragon running Android 2.1 with Sense on a WVGA display for free on contract. In the meantime, you might want to sniff around stores.

Update: Turns out the real, actual, live Orange-branded Desire is black, despite the imagery on Orange's site. We're working on pictures -- stay tuned. Thanks, everyone!

  • New solar cells printed on paper

New solar cells printed on paper

Everyone loves the idea of solar energy. The three big challenges are that solar cells are expensive to produce, they're not very efficient, and you need some means to store the energy collected. I'd heard of solar shingles before, which are basically roofing shingles with solar cells in them, but now word is coming out of solar cells printed on paper. As usual, the technology is still years away from a marketable product, but it's an interesting development.

Too many discounts: Apple Japan bullies online retailers

Japan loves Apple, there's no doubt about it. The brand is one of the most popular tech brands in the country. iPods, Macs and even the iPhone are selling like hot cakes. But apparently, big A, or at least its Japanese subsidiary, is getting a bit arrogant in the process. According to The Nikkei ("Japan's Wall Street Journal"), Apple Japan today ordered a number of major online retailers to stop offering all of their products online.
