Opera Mobile 10 lands on Maemo thanks to pro hobbyists
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsWhat do you know, even professional coders like to develop things on the side. Opera's mobile dev team has been working on a "hobby project" to bring its browser to the Maemo-sporting Nokia N900 and N8x0 devices, and today sees the first fruit of that labor in the form of a "preview build" release. Fredrik Ohrn warns us that there might not ever be a final version, since this is being done just for fun -- and particularly in light of the MeeGo future that awaits the platform -- but for now it's yet another option for your versatile mini-computer. Click the source for the download.

Nokia N900 running Android 2.1, still rough around the edges
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsThis wouldn't be the first time we've heard of Android being lovingly grafted onto Nokia's N900, but this looks to be the most proactive effort yet to get it functional enough for lay N900 users (read: us) to actually install. Eclair's now up and running on the device, complete with both keyboard and touchscreen support -- important fundamentals, we reckon -- and it looks like there's enough chatter on the subject going on over in Maemo's official forums to keep this ball rolling. Everything's being managed under the so-called NITDroid project that aims to get Android ready to roll on both the N900 and the N8x0 series of tablets, so feel free to chip in some advice if you like -- a functional radio stack would have to be high on the priority list, you can bet. Follow the break for a little video of brilliant hackery in action.

Quake 3, Android style
Posted on February 25, 2010 | No Comments
Quake 3 has been ported to Android. It looks slick, too (see video demo below). The project is called “kwaak3” and is based on Quake 3 ports to the iPhone and Nokia N900. The developer got everything up and running on a Motorola Milestone (a GSM Motorola Droid with multi-touch, basically) and makes use of the phone’s keyboard, “so it won’t work on your Nexus One or other phone at this point,” according to the project page.

Video: Nokia N900 + SNES Emulator + PS3 Controller = Portable geek bliss
Posted on February 5, 2010 | No CommentsI’ll admit it: When the oh-so-damned-clever coding community managed to get an SNES emulator running on the N900 at fullspeed with features like TV-out, I got all kinds of excited. Hell, even Nokia was excited about it until they got smacked by the Mighty Hand of the Law for showing it. Well, it just got even [...] -
Firefox Mobile For Maemo Officially Launches
Posted on January 29, 2010 | No CommentsGood news, everyone! Firefox is officially available for Maemo devices, like the Nokia N900! What’s that you say? Firefox has been available for Maemo for a while now? Sure, but now it’s official. Now, that’s not to say that the past releases were “unofficial”; they were just “Release Candidates”, which is sort of a fancy way of [...] -
Nokia N900 gets another software update
Posted on January 14, 2010 | No CommentsAre you rocking a Nokia N900 yet? If you hail from the US, probably not — they do sell’em here, but the carrier-folk (read: T-Mobile) have yet to put it on their shelves. If you plan on buying one in the near future, however, be happy: it just got a wee bit better. In its second [...] -
Firefox Mobile gets one step closer to release
Posted on January 9, 2010 | No Comments
It's still not ready for its "official" launch, but Firefox Mobile just took one big ol' step closer to the big day with the launch of Release Candidate 2. As with the past few releases, this one's only available for Maemo devices -- namely, the N900. Don't got Nokia's latest greatest tablet? Don't sweat it - you can still play with it by way of emulation.
So what's new? Find out after the jump.

Video: Is that a Nokia N900 controlling a PS3 via Bluetooth? (Yes.)
Posted on December 30, 2009 | No CommentsThis is a video showing BlueMaemo, an application that allows you to control your PS3 with a Nokia N900. Well, it will allow you to control any number of devices, it's just that there's a video of it interacting with a PS3. All hail mighty Bluetooth, king of the wireless protocols.

Nokia N900 and the case of the best unboxing ever
Posted on December 21, 2009 | No CommentsWe'll just come out and say it: this is so awesome. In fact, if you want to just take our word for it, skip the copy and head straight to the video after the break -- you really only need to watch the first four or so minutes... Still here? Alright then. The shiny cube comes straight from Espoo and houses a N900, but the only way to get into the box is to plug it into a computer, establish a link, and then type in the right terminal command to unlock the lid (spoiler: it's company motto "connecting people" -- how clever) in addition to -- poof -- smoke! (Our favorite part.) Given the technical prerequisites, our guess is this has something to do with Nokia's the hack-centric "Push" program, but really that's just a guess. Like we said, video after the break, and if you opt to watch past the first couple minutes, you'll get to see a plastic fox. Trust us.[Thanks, Matija]
