By The Numbers: The iPhone 4 vs EVO 4G
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No Comments
The Android vs iPhone fight is officially on. The EVO 4G fired the first shot last Friday when it launched nationwide on Sprint. The Android nation rallied behind the 4G super phone, which finally gave them a reason to be proud of their mobile platform of choice. They loudly pointed out all the EVO 4G's iPhone-killing specs: huge 4.3-inch screen, 4G hotspot mode, dual cameras, and cheap mobile plans.
But the new iPhone is finally official after months of leaks and it's ready to fight although it's not exactly fair. The fourth generation iPhone isn't just going up against one phone. Nope, the EVO 4G is just Android's flavor of the month. A more powerful and sexy Android handset will likely steal its attention by the end of the summer and the iPhone 4 will have to stand against that model as well.
Here we are anyway, though. It's time to let the two hottest phones on the planet stand toe-to-toe on specs and capabilities. Forget the user experience and all that nonsense. This is about screen resolution, network access, megapixels and all the fun stuff that forum users will be spouting off about for months.

Video: What just smashed into Jupiter?
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsAwesome video is awesome? Yes, yes it is. Something smashed into Jupiter a few hours ago, and an amateur astronomer caught the event on video. A similar event happened almost a year ago to the day. Now, does this mean that THE MAYANS WERE RIGHT or some other nonsense? No, of course not. What it does [...] -
Lord of the Rings Online will be free to play this fall
Posted on June 4, 2010 | No CommentsMy inbox in the morning is usually filled with a good degree of nonsense. "Look, it's an iPod dock in the shape of a protozoa!" No thanks, not interested. But this! This is big. Beginning with this fall's expansion, Lord of the Rings Online, the MMO developed by Turbine, will be totally free to play! Meaning, you download the game for free and can play online for free. Free as in beer, folks.

Best Buy now offering Kin One free, Kin Two for $50 on contract
Posted on May 31, 2010 | No CommentsFor all its faults, the prime reason we panned Microsoft's Kin was price. Why buy a Kin when you could get a more capable iPhone, Palm Pre or Android device for the same price? This week, it seems someone at Best Buy HQ has seen the light. As of today, the brick-and-mortar electronics superstore has knocked $50 off the price of both handsets, making the Kin One free and the Kin Two cost only $50 on a two-year contract, with no mail-in rebates or other nonsense required. Now, if only Verizon would do something about that $30 monthly data plan, your teen might finally have a vaguely compelling reason to pick one up.
[Thanks, Sean T.]Best Buy now offering Kin One free, Kin Two for $50 on contract originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 31 May 2010 23:15:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Microsoft: Steve Ballmer will not be speaking at WWDC.
Posted on May 27, 2010 | No CommentsEarly this morning, the rumormill went a bit bonkers. A hole to a parallel universe apparently ripped open outside of an analyst’s office. Through this hole, the analyst saw a world where Steve Ballmer presented something at Apple’s WWDC 2010 keynote. Alas, the analyst didn’t realize that this was a parallel universe, instead interpreting it [...] -
Drumroll, please: Android 2.1 now (finally) available for the Sprint Hero
Posted on May 19, 2010 | No CommentsNever again! Never again do we have to write about Android 2.1 coming to the Sprint Hero. Why? Because it’s here. Though never officially given a date, the Hero 2.1 update was pinned on dozens of leaked purported dates — all of which were either false or missed due to delays. At long last, all that [...] -

Verizon misses the point of the Kin, prices it out of its market
Posted on May 5, 2010 | No CommentsWell, there goes that. The Microsoft Kins seemed like a good system. Online reviews are somewhat positive, at least most say the Kin shows potential. But it doesn't matter. Kin One and Kin Two are likely going to be the only ones of their kind and will only be around for a short while. Verizon killed the platform when it decided that these feature phones need an expensive smartphone data plans.

ABC animates the oil spill for better understanding
Posted on May 3, 2010 | No Comments
People, let's remember as we bicker over iPad nonsense and 3D movies, there's an oil bloom larger than some states quickly growing in the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the ABC newscast above is the normal story, but click through to 1:30 mark for a quick time-lapse animation showing the scale of this disaster. It kind of puts it all in perspective.

LOL! Some1s stealing ur car!: Viper SmartStart for iPhone gets push notifications
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No Comments
We've written about the Viper SmartStart system before. It's the $30-per-year iPhone/BlackBerry app that, when paired with a $500 component in your car, ensures that you never have to worry about strenuous nonsense like turning a key to start your car or unlock your doors ever again.
Up until this point, its been a one way deal. You can tell your car to turn on and fire up the AC, or use your alarm to scare the hell out of people in parking lots miles away - but what if your car wanted to talk back to you?
Now it can!

Bungie: The Halo 2 big E3 reveal back in 2003 was ’smoke and mirrors’
Posted on April 12, 2010 | No CommentsWell now this is mildly embarrassing. Six years ago, Bungieshowed off, and I guess I use that term loosely now, Halo 2 for the very first time. Let's see... 2003, that would make me 17. Trivia! Anyhow, what Bungie showed was a complete hunk of nonsense. This is where you act surprised.

T-Mobile: Give up your iPhone and we’ll give you $350 off an HD2
Posted on April 5, 2010 | No CommentsIt’s 6:30 am. The Alarm app on your iPhone screams to life, the handset vibrating across the table. You grab it before it shuffles off the edge. You stare at the screen. It stares back. “It’s 6:30 AM! Snooze?”, it says through a fake, one-tooth grin. “I hate you, iPhone. I wish you were an HD2.” If [...] -
Ask CG: Best monitor for under $250?
Posted on April 2, 2010 | No CommentsReader Josh writes, Hi CrunchGear! I have a quick question concerning LCD monitors. I need a new one but there are so many choices available I don’t know where to start. My three qualifications are that it be around 24-inches, have HDMI and costs less than $250. Obviously cheaper is better, too. I’m a gamer, but [...]
