  • The Kindle won

    The Kindle won

I’ve been thinking this for a long while: Amazon won the ereader war. They were first to market – not officially, but in terms of mindshare, they offer a software package that is compelling on almost every mobile and desktop platform, and they have an entrenched user base already invested in their product. Nothing else [...]

How has the exciting world of technology changed since the last World Cup? Let us count the ways!

A little birdie told me that the World Cup begins in just a few weeks, on June 11, 2010, in South Africa. Four years prior saw Italy lift the trophy in Germany, beating France on penalties. Zinedine Zidane also headbutted Marco Materazzi that day—an immense event in Internet history. A lot of things have changed since that day in Berlin, a lot of things that will shock and amaze you. For example, did you know that Facebook was still only open to college and high school students the moment Fabio Grosso smashed the ball past Fabien Barthez? So, what else has changed between then and now?

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Android_2_2_Froyo_beta_hands_on_Flash_10_1_WiFi_hotspots'; Much to our surprise at the time, when Adobe sent us a Flash 10.1-enabled Nexus One for testing, the phone came preloaded with a preview build of Android 2.2 -- a.k.a. "Froyo" -- the apparent turning point for curbing Android fragmentation due for a very public unveiling today at Google I/O. We've had a day or two to dig into it, and while we're surely missing some improvements here or there (Google was unable to provide us a changelog as of this writing), we've spent pretty much all our waking moments combing through every virtual nook and cranny. So what can Eclair alumni expect from the revised platform? Read on for more!

Kindle update adds Facebook and Twitter interaction, password protection, and better PDF control

Not to be outdone by Nook, Amazon has released the Kindle 2.5 firmware. The new software adds a number of interesting features including the ability to share passages of books with your Facebook and Twitter friends providing that, unlike mine, yours are literate (don't worry, they won't be able to read this). The firmware will launch later next month and includes the following features:

Barnes & Noble stores aren't going to be the only place you can snag a Nook soon. Nope, it seems that the boys in blue will be hawking the ereader starting April 18. Apparently the units are even in the backrooms of some retail outlets right now so who knows, some might slip onto the show floor by accident before the 18.

    Digitimes analyst predicts iPad…nano?

Earlier today, a senior analyst at Digitimes research claimed that Apple is planning to launch a 5 to 7 inch version of the iPad in the first quarter of 2011. The smaller iPad will be priced below $400 and will target consumers who focus mainly on reading and do not have a high demand for text input. For comparison, the current iPad has a 9.7 inch display while the iPod touch has a 3.5 inch display, but both the Nook and Kindle have a 6-inch screen.
