  • AppMakr now supports GeoRSS tagging

    AppMakr now supports GeoRSS tagging

AppMakr is a service that allows you to make simple, Internet-fed apps for the iPhone, Touch, or iPad. Historically, AppMakr has been called a glorified RSS reader but, with the addition of push notifications, a native image viewer, and GeoRSS support, they're trying to shake that image. GeoRSS is the latest addition to the product and allows content providers to stick a little XML code into their feed to mark posts with GPS coordinates. You can then use the iOS's native map-handling to view these posts on Google Maps or within the app itself.

Behind the scenes with Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 team: ‘I think about this really as a first release’

CNET had a chance recently to get embedded deep within Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 engineering group, listening in on meetings with OEMs, arguments, celebrations, and all the other drama that comes with trying to ship a huge product that's new from the ground up in just a couple years' time. There aren't any blockbuster revelations in here -- no launch devices, ship dates, or prices -- but it's an interesting look at the project from Windows Phone engineering VP Terry Myerson's perspective, who acknowledges that it'll take a long time and several releases to catch up to the competition but still thinks they'll "actually have a lot of happy customers" with version one.

On a related note, some existing Windows Marketplace devs have started getting notifications that Microsoft wants to send them loaner Windows Phone 7 devices -- yes, loaners, meaning they'll need to be returned to the mother ship at some point down the road. They're apparently set up for delivery in July, which should give publishers plenty of time to stock up the Marketplace in time for that planned holiday launch.

  • Palm loses webOS notifications architect to Apple

Palm loses webOS notifications architect to Apple

Rich Dellinger might not be a name you instantly recognize, but he is the dude credited with bringing about the unintrusive banner notification system that forms part of webOS' widespread appeal. And, as of today, he's also in the employ of one Steve Jobs. The new Senior UI Designer at Apple, Inc looks to have made his way through Palm's exit doors in the immediate aftermath of the HP takeover announcement, and joins Matias Duarte on the list of significant talent departures from the webOS design team. We expect Rich will be getting his teeth stuck into the iPhone's admittedly tired and obtrusive notifications, and hopefully sprinkling some of that webOS fairy dust into the next iteration of Apple's iOS. Let's be honest, who here hasn't dreamt of an iPre?

    [Thanks, Tal]

  • Farmville Coming To The iPhone In Late June, Jobs Pronounces Zynga “Zenya”

Farmville Coming To The iPhone In Late June, Jobs Pronounces Zynga “Zenya”

Zynga's hit game Farmville is coming to the iPhone, says the gaming giant's CEO Mark Pincus at this morning's WWDC keynote. This should make the 35 million daily players of Farmville players overjoyed, as now they can create their virtual farms on the go. Oddly, Steve Jobs pronounced Zynga, "Zenya" in the keynote. Twice. The app looks like Farmville on Facebook, but on the iPhone. The app will feature in app purchase support, along with push notifications for harvesting and the like. You'll have access to your same farm, and your same friends as on Facebook as well. The app will launch at the end of June.

LOL! Some1s stealing ur car!: Viper SmartStart for iPhone gets push notifications

We've written about the Viper SmartStart system before. It's the $30-per-year iPhone/BlackBerry app that, when paired with a $500 component in your car, ensures that you never have to worry about strenuous nonsense like turning a key to start your car or unlock your doors ever again. Up until this point, its been a one way deal. You can tell your car to turn on and fire up the AC, or use your alarm to scare the hell out of people in parking lots miles away - but what if your car wanted to talk back to you? Now it can!

    BugMe now available for iPad

Like every other tech blogger, I've been flooded with press releases about apps that are now available for the iPad. I've been underwhelmed, on the whole, with "news" of app updates for iPad compatibility but word came to me recently that BugMe had been approved for the iPad. That got me thinking about my review of BugMe for the iPhone.

    Review: BugMe for iPhone

I'm not a Getting Things Done kind of guy. I've never understood people who live and die by their Franklin Planners. I've never understood the huge proliferation of scheduling and reminder applications for the various computing platforms I've used over the years. I'll reveal my secret at the end, but for now we're going to take a look at BugMe, a reminder application now available for the iPhone.

    App review: MailTones

So you've been using your iPhone for a couple months or years now. You might be addicted to your iPhone. Even if you're not addicted, chances are that you have a stock of applications on which you rely heavily. Without a doubt, the single most useful application on my iPhone, and the one I use constantly throughout the day, is email. I live by email, and I read and compose email messages far more often than I make actual phone calls with my phone. To preserve my sanity, I've disabled the notification sound for new emails: if I hadn't, my phone would be making noise pretty constantly throughout the day. But that's not an ideal situation, because there are times when I do want to be notified of an important new email. Enter MailTones, an application that allows you to set custom alert tones, and makes good use of Apple's push notifications.

  • Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

Notice the Windows alternative in HP’s slate device. This is a good thing.

We have written repeatedly that Windows itself is one of the main reasons why touchscreen computers have never caught the general public's attention. The interface just wasn't designed for finger input. Like it or not, that's the truth. Windows was designed to be used with a mouse, and to a lesser extent, a pen or stylus. That's fine. Windows 7 works great. I'm writing this on a Win7 machine. But I hate Windows on my tablet computers for the aforementioned reason. It's also the reason I'm very apprehensive of the upcoming onslaught of slate computers. I'm afraid that wonderful hardware will be passed up in favor of the disappointing iPad because of the interface. But Adobe gave me hope today in its demo of Flash and Air on the HP slate device.
