  • SCO/Novell suit is over, SCO loses

SCO/Novell suit is over, SCO loses

It is over. The SCO’s long-running lawsuit against Novell over a number of patents involved around Unix copyright. In short, SCO claimed to own Unix even after Novell bought it back near the turn of the century. SCO’s patent-trolling has been shameless. The once great company reduced itself to a lawsuit machine and essentially attacked [...]

  • There will be a Mass Effect movie. Will Lost’s Matthew Fox play Commander Shepard?

There will be a Mass Effect movie. Will Lost’s Matthew Fox play Commander Shepard?

It's takes a special type of nerd to read a video game's novelization, and I'm none too proud to say that I recently started reading the Mass Effect novel. But there's a certain quiet dignity in reading a novelization that simply isn't present when sitting at the multiplex (or downloading the Blu-ray rip, as it were) watching a movie. Get ready: EA has sold the movie rights to Mass Effect, and it's gone to Legendary Pictures, the same people behind The Dark Knight, Watchmen, and The Hangover. So there's hope the movie won't be total dross.

  • Kindle DX failing out of Darden Business School

Kindle DX failing out of Darden Business School

According to Ars Technica, Darden Business School students are unhappy with the Amazon Kindle DX in terms of academic usefulness. That's not to say that they're down on the DX in general: there's pretty high support amongst Darden students for the DX as a personal e-reader. It's just not quite the classroom supplement that Darden administration had hoped it would be.

Zeus keylogger affects Firefox, Internet Explorer users doing online banking

Ooh, this is a nasty one, isn't it? There's a computer virus out there called Zeus that targets users engaged in online banking. It affects users running Firefox and Internet Explorer—a fair chunk of all Internet users, then. As always, the best policy here is to keep your wits about you as you browse the Internet.

  • Are video games art?

    Are video games art?

I'm hesitant to write this because, really, who cares? And I don't mean that in a negative, cynical way at all, but rather in a practical way. Clearly there are people who enjoy playing video games, just as there are people who enjoy creating video games. Why should these people concern themselves with whether or not Roger Ebert, a 67-year-old man who wouldn't know the difference between World of Warcraft and The Legend of Zelda if you smashed his face in with the blunt end of the Master Sword, “approves” of their pastime or vocation?

  • Where a radio controlled Nissan Sentra SE-R is used to sell the real thing

Where a radio controlled Nissan Sentra SE-R is used to sell the real thing

Car commercials are as old as TV. There’s nothing really exciting about the format anymore because we already know the format. To sell a luxury car, a B-rate celebrity often points out the finer things. Trucks commercials showcase manly men preforming manly tasks. So it’s only fitting really that that an R/C car is the [...]

  • Reminder: Stargate Universe comes back on tonight

Reminder: Stargate Universe comes back on tonight

Stargate Universe's season one starts back up tonight and we might finally see some the alien baddies and a space ship fight. The first ten episodes where just OK, but the series shows potential with a good cast, novel story line, and great sets/locations. Those three things also happened to be the three pillars holding up the previous Stargate shows. All SGU needs to do is tone down the seriousness a bit and run a bit more loose. That's what Stargate always did best and truly separated itself from other shows within the genre.

The HD JVC Everio GZ-HM550 lets smartphones control functions via Bluetooth

The JVC GZ-HM550 brings a new set of standards to the table. It isn't the 1920 x 1080 recording or 9 MP stills. Nor is it the 32GB internal flash memory with an SD/SDHC card slot playing backup or even the Konica Minolta HD lens. Nope, it's the novel Bluetooth function that might make a full size camcorder relevant again in a smartphone world.

Things That Can Kill You In the Ocean, Part XII: Sea Drones

So you’re in a submarine, safe beneath the ocean waves. You’re pretty safe, right? Wrong. Apparently DARPA is working on Sea Drones that will follow ships and subs as they make their way across the briny deep, reporting positions and potentially going boom-boom if they feel like it. It’s all concept right now, but it’s [...]

Mysterious camcorder surfaces with DLP pico projector attachment

The only info we can find about this camcorder comes from the YouTube video and description, which states it's a first-of-its-kind camcorder attachment using a WVGA DLP pico chipset. We can't make out the manufacturer and really anything else about the concept. But one thing is clear. We love it. Click through for the video demo.

The “moki” 1st gen iPod shuffle case

Do you think this Spanish designer knows that Apple is a couple of generations past the original iPod shuffle? I had and returned that iPod shuffle model years ago. (for a Harmony remote, btw) No matter, the case is still kind of novel, if not somewhat impractical.

With the success of the Kindle clear, it's no surprise that other booksellers want in on the action too. However, a WSJ report is suggesting that Barnes & Noble is prepping its own, self-branded device. And get this, it might run Android.
