Samsung Windows Phone 7 prototype hands-on
Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsIt's been a bit of a unicorn since making a quick appearance at MIX, but we just got the chance to go hands-on with Samsung's Omnia i8910-based Windows Phone 7 prototype phone. Interestingly, we were told that this hardware will never be released to market -- it's just for testing purposes right now. That testing is going quite well, as far as we can see -- Microsoft's people are starting to carry WP7 devices as their personal phones now, and while the software is still quite buggy, the build we saw in action was noticeably faster than before. We were also told that the hardware in the pipeline -- particularly from Samsung -- is apparently quite spectacular, and that this particular device doesn't represent the launch set of devices. We'll have to see -- we actually thought this prototype was quite handsome in person, although it's a little thicker than you might expect. Hit up the gallery for some more pics!

Turning the excitement up to 11, Samsung announces *two* new WinMo 6.5 phones

I know I said yesterday that it would be hard to get excited over a WinMo 6.5 powered follow up to the Omnia, but Samsung today dropped a bombshell on us. No, not a WinPho 7 Omnia, two new WinMo 6.5 phones: the Omnia Pro 4 and 5!
Using mathemagics, scientists have proven that news of two half-interesting phones actually equals the news of one interesting phone.
But I can't say that I'm moved by Samsung's announcement.

Samsung i8920 Omnia HD2 leaking its way across the net as we speak

Samsung's successor to the Symbian-powered i8910 (aka OmniaHD) has just bust its pipes, and is now leaking all over the internet (too soon?).
The leaks thus far point to a 4" Super AMOLED screen, a 12MP camera with both Xenon and LED flash (why not?), 30fps 720p video recording (just like its older sibling), and 16 or 32 GB internal storage, all running atop Symbian^3.
Oh, and it also includes the soon-to-be-standard-on-high-end-phones WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.

When we reviewed the Samsung Omnia II, we forgot to mention one major drawback: the lack of Giorgio Armani branding. Luckily the KIRFmeisters of Shenzhen have picked up where the original manufacturer dropped the ball. And they threw in a QWERTY keyboard to boot! No word on price or availability of the KIRF Samsung Omnia Pro Giorgio, but that's probably for the best. And yes, it has dual SIM cards.

PSA: Some OLED screens don’t suck under direct sunlight anymore

I loves me some AMOLED screens. They're easier on the battery, easier on the eyes, and the colors tend to be so damned strong that they just about jump off the screen and punch you in the face. I mean, what's not to love? Oh, that's right - they tend to fail miserably as soon as you step outside. Mix one part direct sunlight with one part AMOLED screen, and you'll find yourself with a completely illegible screen.
At least, that used to be the case.. We're not quite sure why they didn't play this up with deafening fanfare, but it seems like Samsung has stealthily solved the direct sunlight dilemma.

Verizon Samsung Omnia II impressions
Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsWhen the Omnia II first appeared on our radar, two things caught our attention: TouchWiz 2.0 and Windows Mobile 6.5. To be honest, neither of these items really piqued our interest: we knew what to expect from WinMo and had serious reservations about Samsung's latest and greatest UI. That said, we were more than willing to suspend judgement until we saw her in action. With bullet points that include a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, 800MHz processor, and 8GB storage (before you even get to your microSD card), one could honestly hold out hope for a pretty decent product. Did the handset make for a satisfying, well-rounded smartphone? Or did it just find new ways of repeating the same old errors? You'll have to read on to find out.

Posted on December 22, 2009 | No CommentsSamsung's WinMo 6.5-packin' Omnia II has been available to Verizon Wireless customers (or at least those unaffected by the Droid) for a few weeks now, but strangely, we've yet to see a proper dissection of this here smartphone until today. That said, we're sure the patience you've put into this will pay off after after heading past the break, where all of the itty-bitty internals are shown in stunning detail for your entertainment / education. As a good gal we once knew would say: "Ain't that the berries!"

Exclusive Video: Hands-on With Swype For Android

I've been pretty pumped about Swype's ultra-speedy alternative typing solution for touchscreen devices ever since it first debuted at TechCrunch50 2008. My excitement only grew when it finally made its way to a handset, the Omnia II, just last month - but as I'm not the biggest fan of the OS that powers that device, my thumbs were left twiddling until an Android port was released.
Earlier this morning, I got my hands-on a pre-release copy of just that: Swype for Android. So how is it? In a word: Great. If you want more than that, you'll have to dive behind the jump for a hands-on impressions and video.

If you're one of the 3 million or so people rocking the original Samsung Omnia, you might be feelin' like you've been left out in the cold now that the Omnia II is on the shelves. At the very least, you're probably a bit envious of the Omnia II's finger-swiping text input method, Swype. Yeah? Don't fret - we've got good news.

Posted on December 2, 2009 | No CommentsIt's here at last, and we're frankly thrilled to be holding Samsung's very first TouchWiz 2.0 device, the Verizon Wireless-bound Samsung Omnia II. The 2.0 software brings with it a Widget Store, and as a general UI manages to skin over a majority of Windows Mobile 6.5, which is puttering along underneath. The handset is a tad on the bulky side, but makes up for it with a wonderful 3.7-inch AMOLED WVGA screen and a very nice 5 megapixel camera. We'll have a review for you before long, but for now you can check out a quick video rundown (including some playtime with the Samsung-exclusive "Swype" keyboard) after the break. And if that video is enough to convince you, the phone is available now on Verizon Wireless for $200 after rebate.

The Samsung i8910 HD (or Omnia HD, depending on your region and personal preference) has one of the most dazzling AMOLED displays ever offered on a mobile device -- but the phone's understated, muted gray case belies the visual delight that waits just a button press away. The obvious solution? Draw a ring of bright, shiny gold around the display, of course, which is exactly the angle Sammy's run with in the announcement of its i8910 HD Gold Edition today. Available in two colors -- the equally hedonistic Champagne Gold and Luxury Brown -- the phone includes a TV-out cable and cradle in the box, meaning that you're paying for more than just some faux precious metal plating. Leaked Video: Swyping Versus iPhone Typing. (Swype For Android Is Next).

A year ago, Swype launched a new way to type on a touchscreen phone at TechCrunch50. Swype was created by the inventor of the T9 predictive typing system used on most phones today because he felt that new text input methods for small touchscreens are sorely needed. Today, the startup announced the first phone to use the technology will be the Samsung Omnia II on Verizon.
As you can see in the video above, which shows a side-by-side comparison of typing on the Omnia II versus on an iPhone, the way you type with Swype is you literally swipe your finger from one letter to the next as fast as you can. In the video, the Swypist beats the iPhone typist hands down, so to speak.
