  • Android Market is down, showing zero apps (update: fixed)

Android Market is down, showing zero apps (update: fixed)

Look, we know that checking the Android Market for updates its a nervous habit during brief periods of downtime for many of us -- but for now, you're going to have to go back to chewing your nails or tapping your fingers on the table, because the Market's down. Well, that's only partially true -- you can still get into the Market app on your phone without any errors, you just won't see any apps in there, which renders it pretty useless by our estimation. Hang on, don't panic -- we imagine this won't last long.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: It's still down for us on a Froyo Nexus One, but if you take a gander through our comments section, you'll see that a lot of folks are having no trouble at all -- so it's probably based on your location, your devices, and your operating system. As far as we can tell, it's not restricted to Froyo since we've received a number of tips on the issue and we're hearing of some Droids that can't see apps. Keep the observations coming, folks!

Update 2: Google just reached out to us to let us know that it should be fixed and that the total outage was somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minutes. They're apologizing for the inconvenience -- but with the Droid X being announced today, can you really hold a grudge?

    Linux: the people’s product

The Linux Foundation ran a t-shirt design contest back in March to kick off the grand opening of the new Linux.com store. More than 100 designs were submitted, and of these six were selected as finalists. Almost eight thousand votes were tallied, and the community-selected winner, with 57% of the votes, is Mr. Said Hassan from the Gaza Strip, who designed "The People's Product." Shirts with this winning design are being produced now, and will be available for purchase at the Linux.com store soon-ish.

  • Apple’s Small Problem: iOS 4 And iPhone 4 One-Up The iPad

Apple’s Small Problem: iOS 4 And iPhone 4 One-Up The iPad

The tech world is buzzing about iOS 4, the latest version of the iPhone operating system that Apple released today. And rightly so -- it's an improvement over the previous version in every way. In fact, once you've been using it for a while, it's hard to go back to using iPhone OS 3.x. And there's an unfortunate casualty there: the iPad. I've been using developer builds of iOS 4 (then called iPhone OS 4) for weeks now. I've grown very used to using things such as the new app switcher and folders. In fact, I've grown so used to using them that when I switch back over to the iPad now (running iPhone OS 3.2), I can't help but feel that it in some ways seems antiquated. Yes, I know that's ridiculous for a device that's not even three months old yet. But the feeling lingers.

Nokia downgrades sales forecasts thanks to ‘competitive environment’ (aka, ‘doing business’)

Look, Nokia, don't sweat it: no one could've ever predicted that Android would get more awesome, or that Apple would announce another iPhone. Sit down, let us bring you a cup of hot chocolate, you'll feel better... goodness, the mobile industry is filled with more wild plot twists than a Univision telenovela, isn't it? Unfortunately, your shareholders might be a little less understanding of the fact that you still haven't wrapped your noodle around the rapidly-changing smartphone market some three and a half years after the introduction of the original iPhone, or that you're blaming "shifts in product mix towards somewhat lower gross margin products" in part for your forecast downgrade -- even though you've been very candid about your desire to move the company's focus toward emerging markets. Why you can't manage to cobble together a competitive operating system with your overwhelming market share, cash, and resources is a bit of a mystery, but maybe it'll all make sense by the time you release second-quarter earnings on July 22.

Follow the break for the somber press release.

Microsoft shows off updated Windows Phone 7 build, brings minor changes

There hasn't exactly been a ton of Windows Phone 7 news to come out of Microsoft's TechEd conference this week, but the company did take the opportunity to release an updated build of the mobile operating system, which should be one of the last before the release to manufacturing. That expectedly brings only minor changes, including smaller text on the lock screen, but it is said to appear "more complete and responsive" in demonstrations than before, which is always a welcome development. Hit up the source link below for a few more pics.

PSA: The new Sprint Hero update blocks rooting.. and that might be all it does

Alongside the announcement that the EVO 4G’s first OTA update was already available, Sprint casually mentioned that an update was also available for their HTC Hero. Sweet! Updates! Surely this patch fixes some of the issues (shorter battery life, roaming oddities, etc) that Hero owners have been having since the move to 2.1, right? Not exactly. [...]
