Too much WWDC? There’s always this charming little video of kids acting out SMB
Posted on June 7, 2010 | No CommentsThere’s always a good number of readers who complain ruefully about WWDC days. It’s Apple this and Apple that, right? Well, how about some kids named Ryker and Raiden (!!?) pretending to be Mario and Luigi while their parents act out the roles of Goomba, Princess Peach, and Bowser? It’s 6 minutes long and you generally [...] -
Oprah Moment, Take 2: Google gives an EVO 4G to everyone at I/O
Posted on May 20, 2010 | No Comments
Okay. Think back to elementary school. Your buddy got a brand new toy for Christmas -- the one you've been wanting for months. Your parents got you socks. Remember that feeling? That feeling of loss for something you never had? That's called jealousy, friend. Now magnify that by a hundred.
Google just gave everyone at I/O the EVO 4G.

Skype Offers Free WiFi to Ease the Airport Pain
Posted on April 22, 2010 | No Comments
Airports are wonderful places, aren't they? Everyone is friendly, the seats are comfortable, the prices reasonable, and the food delicious. I love hanging around airports. I relish the time between connecting flights, and I have been known to pack my bags and drive to the nearest international airport just to hang out and pretend I'm waiting for a flight.
However, I realise that these feelings aren't universal; there are some people out there who don't enjoy airports. While I would be happy to relish in the extra few days of airport merriment that the recent flight cancellations have caused, Skype seem to think I'm in the minority, and have taken it upon themselves to give free internet access at more than 100,000 WiFi hotspots worldwide.

Garmin nüvi 3700 series part of the pre-crime unit
Posted on April 19, 2010 | No CommentsI think the standalone GPS device is all but dead – I’m a pessimist that way and I know that your parents and mine both use standalone GPSes but that’s because we never showed them how to use the ones on their phones – but Garmin is still churning out some nice-looking models. The members [...] -
EasyBloom Plus allows nerds to garden like a pro
Posted on April 16, 2010 | No Comments
Hidden in the picture above is a fake plant. Not only is it a fake plant, but it's a high tech fake plant, complete with USB port and soil sampling technology like that used in the Mars rover! The EasyBloom Plus is the fancy successor to the EasyBloom not plus, which allows gardeners to collect sunlight, temperature and moisture data from their lawn or garden and track that data over time. The Plus model introduces a fertilizer subscription service to help make sure you don't over- or under-fertilize your plants.

Allegation: School district used laptop to take 400+ photos of student without permission
Posted on April 16, 2010 | No CommentsOh, this school district is totally boned. You'll recall that the Lower Merion School District, in Pennsylvania, had given students MacBooks so they could do their schoolwork. Fun. What wasn't fun, though, was that the school is alleged to have snapped photos of the students without their consent. The whole kerfluffle is wrangled in the legal system now, and one of the district's employees who had access to the images called it a "little LMSD soap opera." Replied another: "I know, I love it." Oh boy, not good for the school district.

For Windows Phone 7, Only The Best Is Good Enough
Posted on April 11, 2010 | No Comments
Feeling a bit disappointed with the recent(ish) announcement of the feature-reduced, locked-down OS that is Windows Phone 7? Despite valid arguments for the change, it does feel a bit like moving back in with your parents after finishing college: sure it's a nice house, but what's with all the rules?
However, a recent interview (in Dutch) with Charlie Kindel during the Dutch DevDay event says that while the first release of WinPho 7 may be a little "lacking" initially, missing features will be added in the future... but only when they're perfect.

SPLORT FART: DIY Atari noises
Posted on March 23, 2010 | No Comments
Dear pre-teens: Want to piss off your parents? Buy and build this thing. It's a mini Atari-esque noise generator that fits inside an Altoids tin (not included.) While it makes noises like the Atari 2600 used to, it does not make "sounds" per se, in that said sounds could be pleasing to the ear. These are definitely not.
It's only $25 and it's totally DIY. It also sounds like you're squeezing a gerbil through a clothes press.

Using children to steal DVDs eh?

Here's a candidate for the Canadian parent of the year award. Police in Richmond B.C. are looking for a couple that used their kids to load up on over $3000 worth of Blu-ray and DVD discs from Future Shop. The estimate is that the couple took between 80 to 100 movies.

Oh rapture! GPS 800G watch phone is here and it's ready to rumble! This phone has GPRS tracking, an SOS button, and can record how fast you're moving, allowing alerts to be sent to scared and frightened parents. But don't take my word on it:
