North Korea: The new outsourcing capital?

Is North Korea the next Silicon Valley? PC World seems to think so, with a story that explains how the country is the new hotspot for outsourcing (among other IT initiatives). Apparently North Korea is the pound-for-pound best place for IT talent in the world. That is, you won't find a country with a better, more educated collection of computer programmers and engineers, software designers and the like in such close quarters.

Aava Mobile’s Intel Moorestown prototype plays World of Warcraft beautifully (video)

Intel has managed to make Moorestown-based phones do an awful lot of things on stage. Multitask, scale photos sans lag, and automatically correct your grammar before it comes out of your mouth. But believe it or not, one thing we haven't seen the Aava Mobile-built reference design do is play the full PC version of World of Warcraft and / or Quake III (from within Moblin) for over an hour on a full charge. Well, until this week's Computex event. Peek a couple of videos just past the break if you're in disbelief, and trust us when we say that it had no issues keep the frames flowing at a comfortable clip. The future is bright, people.

Had enough Android excitement yet? Of course not. Following up on the Froyo release yesterday, we've got the no less vital news that the iPhone 3G port of Android is now ready to download and install. Having shown off Google's OS running on a 3G two weeks ago, author David Wang has clearly had to iron out a few kinks before serving up the necessary binaries, but here they are now, replete with a handy install guide he's penned over at PC World. Time to get yourself on the dual-booting bandwagon, no?

Wal-Mart starts video game price war, cuts prices of games by $10

It's so, so easy to hate on Wal-Mart, what with destroying this country's mom and pop culture, importing cheap junk from China, and freaking out whenever employees mention the word “union.” But if you're a gamer, you really ought to cast aside your prejudices, brave the crowds, and find the games you've always wanted for a good $10 less than what you'll find elsewhere. That's right: we're having ourselves a good old fashioned price war.

The Google Phone May Be Data Only, VoIP Driven Device

Yesterday we wrote about the soon to launch Google Phone, a Google branded Android phone that we believe will hit the market in early 2010. Lots of people are saying there's no way Google will enter the phone market directly and compete with all these handset manufacturers who have bet on Android. Daring Fireball, PC World and InfoMobile are among the doubters. And a lot of people are pointing to a Tom Krazit/CNET article last month that quoted Google's Andy Rubin: "We're not making hardware...We're enabling other people to build hardware," and "Rubin, vice president of engineering for Android at Google, scoffed at the notion that the company would "compete with its customers" by releasing its own phone."

Android Market Now Over 10,000 Applications Strong

In the mobile OS world, Google's Android is still a challenger but with the amount of devices that will be running the system that are due to come out in the coming months alone in combination with its open approach it is definitely a contestant to watch closely. The success of Apple's App Store for the iPhone / iPod Touch is often measured by how many apps have already been developed for the platform (around 70,000), but since Google doesn't disclose exactly how many apps are available through Android Market it was difficult to compare the two on that particular level. But thanks to AndroLib, which provides a useful website where you can browse Android apps from your computer (unlike the Android Market website), we can conclude that there are currently at least 10,000 applications and games available on the platform today.

Microsoft admits that it feels threatened by Linux

desktop linuxMicrosoft stated publicly in their IRS 10-K filing that they face "strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market." It's important to note that this is the "PC market", not the server market. Microsoft is explicitly stating that their desktop operating system is threatened by Linux. "Competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat." I suppose a couple years ago this announcement might have gotten me worked up a bit, but it's 2009 and I'm just like "Yeah, and you're just figuring this out?"
