I've been a full-time Linux user since 1999. I've been an advocate for Linux and Free Software for most of that time. My advocacy efforts usually stay within my social group, or at FreeGeek Columbus, though occasionally I'll use my posts here to support the penguin. Linux, as an open source project developed by an ad-hoc group of people, often with competing agendas, has succeeded without much mainstream advertising. Microsoft had their laptop shopper commercials, and Apple has had their wildly successful "I'm a Mac" commercials, but there have been few Linux commercials. In the open source style of Linux development, now's your chance to change that state of affairs!

Japan sure has a penchant for extraordinary piggy banks. Tokyo-based toy maker Banpresto is now selling a quite unusual model, too. The Coin Penguin [JP] is a cute little, well, penguin, that can open its mouth, swallow coins and then reward the user by performing a quick dance.

As a Linux user, I'm tickled to see these new USB drives in the shape of an Emperor penguin. Not only are they super cute, they come pre-loaded with a bootable instance of Ubuntu 9.04! And if for some reason you don't like penguins, you can get some visceral pleasure by pretending to rip off the li'l bugger's head in order to access the USB jack inside.

So one thing I've noticed when looking at the accessory packs for handheld gaming units, is that they usually have a bunch of crap you don't need. I mean, who actually uses an individual plastic case for each of their games? It's silly. The people at Penguin agree with me, and they've produced their "10 in 1 Travel kit" that appears to only have the stuff you actually want, and they skip the extra stuff to keep the cost down.
