Posted on June 22, 2010 | No CommentsT-minus one month and counting till the release of StarCraft II, and we're starting to see officially branded peripherals hit the store shelves. Here's one such peripheral: the SteelSeries StarCraft II Limited Edition Zboard. As the name suggests, it's based on the company's Z Board, except, you know, StarCraft-ified.

Xperia X10 Mini unboxed, dwarfed by its own peripherals (video)
Posted on May 18, 2010 | No CommentsSony Ericsson wasn't kidding when they called this one the Xperia X10 Mini. We must admit, it's a cute little guy -- if you'd like to see for yourself, we have the company's own unboxing video for you after the break. This is one of the very first consumer samples that's become available, and there will be some differences between what you see here and whatever lands in the UK and US, for instance. While a USB cable, charger, and stereo headset will come standard depending on market and carrier, extras -- including remote headset, powered stereo speakers, and additional back covers besides the standard black or white -- will differ accordingly. What are you waiting for? Hop past the break to see for yourself.Continue reading Xperia X10 Mini unboxed, dwarfed by its own peripherals (video)

APC unveils new Back-UPS models
Posted on April 6, 2010 | No Comments
APC by Schneider Electric recently announced a new line of Back-UPS Pro models. To recap, UPS stands for uninterrupted power supply (not united parcel service). These are essentially backup batteries that help keep your machine running during blackouts and prevent damage to your equipment from power surges. As with their previous models, APC offers power-saving outlets on their UPS devices that automatically shut down power to unused peripherals. For instance, your monitors, printers, and speakers will automatically shut off whenever your computer is turned off or goes into sleep mode. Apparently, this can save as much as $50 per year in electricity bill.

Review: BookEndz Dock For MacBook Pro
Posted on January 2, 2010 | No Comments
Mac users really haven't had the chance to use a docking station. Most PC's come with an option for a docking station but Apple has never followed suit. Third-party manufacturer BookEndz has a suite of docks for Macs ranging from the first generation MacBook, to the PowerBook, all the way to the latest unibody MacBook Pro. Over the last couple of weeks I've been playing around with the BookEndz dock for the first generation unibody 15" MacBook Pro.
Overall, the dock is well built. It adds some functionality that might be needed in the future, including extra USB ports, etc. Previous versions of the docks did have both a DVI port and a VGA port, so that you could hook up two external monitors to your Mac, but with this version, you can only hook up one monitor through the Mini Display Port.

Magellan debuts GPS app / car kit for iPhone and iPod touch
Posted on November 17, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, Misc, Apple, iPhone OS
Magellan's new iPhone navigation app won't do much for the iPod touch on its own, but it looks like the company's forthcoming Premium Car Kit will in fact work just fine with the handheld out of the box, unlike TomTom's similar Car Kit. Otherwise, there aren't exactly a ton of surprises, but the cradle is fully adjustable to accommodate a range of sleeves or cases, and it'll of course also charge your iPhone or iPod touch, and give it some amplified sound courtesy of the built-in speaker. The navigation app itself also seems to be more than ready to challenge the competition, with it boasting spoken street names, NAVTEQ maps, 3D landmarks, in-app music control, a pedestrian mode, and a price tag of $79.99. No word on a price or release date for the cradle just yet, but Magellan says it is "coming soon" -- iPhone users can get the app from the App Store right now.

Samsung’s Ubicell CDMA base station going 3G in 2010
Posted on November 17, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, CDMA
We're all for upping our cell service in-home, so a few cheers to Samsung for upgrading its Ubicell personal CDMA base station to 3G. Joining the femtocell party in 2010, all we know beyond its primary directive is built-in GPS for more accurate E911 calls. Mum's the word on price, carriers, or any more definitive launch date. The last Ubicell (pictured) was launched with Verizon, so nah, we wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this one here followed in its ancestor's footsteps.Samsung's Ubicell CDMA base station going 3G in 2010 originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 00:27:00 EST. PhoneSuit Primo adds extra juice, minimal bulk to your iPhone / iPod
Posted on November 13, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, Apple
We were suitably impressed by Mophie's Juice Pack Air extended battery / iPhone case when we got a chance to try one out earlier this year, but if you're looking for an extended battery without the case you might want to consider this new Primo micro battery pack form PhoneSuit. Designed for use with various iPods in addition to the iPhone, this one packs an 800mAh battery inside its tiny enclosure, which promises to add up to 45 hours of music playback time to your iPod, or up to three hours of extra talk time to your iPhone 3G. Better still, it has a fairly reasonable price tag of $35, or you can snag a three-pack for $89.95 if you like to be extra prepared (or are looking for a few stocking stuffers). We'll also be checking this one out ourselves shortly, so stay tuned to see if it actually lives up to its claims.PhoneSuit Primo adds extra juice, minimal bulk to your iPhone / iPod originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 03:56:00 EST. T-Mobile Tap and webConnect Jet now available
Posted on November 11, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Peripherals, Others, T-Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Looking for a cheap full touch handset or a USB stick with 3G capability for T-Mobile? Heck, why not both? The self-branded Tap intro'd last month has now hit retail, bringing a 2 megapixel cam, GPS, stereo Bluetooth, and a choice of two hunger-inducing colors for $79.99 on contract. Coming alongside the Tap is the webConnect Jet USB modem, which can find its way into your shopping cart for as little as zero dollars -- $50 less than the older webConnect it slides next to in the lineup. Drop Android onto that feisty little Tap, sell it for the same price, and we're pretty sure we'd have a winner on our hands -- next year, perhaps?

ZyXEL’s MWR222 Mobile Wireless Router will stop at nothing to get you connected
Posted on November 11, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals
Finding connections on the road can be tough, but like a digital Sherpa ZyXEL's MWR222 will drag you straight to that bounteous broadband then sit by quietly while you take all the credit. It can act as a wired router, connecting to your DSL or cable line and beaming out 802.11g/b/n wireless, but also offers integrated 3G/4G support, meaning just about wherever and whenever you turn this on you should find a connection. It'll even keep track of your monthly wireless plan quota and help you avoid expensive charges. An integrated battery means completely wireless operation and a rugged design means it won't complain if you throw it in the bottom of your laptop bag when it ships sometime in Q1 of next year. That said, at $299 you probably won't want to be too rough with it.ZyXEL's MWR222 Mobile Wireless Router will stop at nothing to get you connected originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 08:18:00 EST. AT&T intros USBConnect Lightning for 7.2Mbps service
Posted on November 9, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, Others, ATT, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS, HSUPA
When you're rolling out a new 7.2Mbps upgrade to your network, it naturally helps if you've got some compliant hardware in the stable -- so to that end, AT&T has announced its USBConnect Lightning from Sierra Wireless today. Apart from 7.2Mbps downlink capability, the new model's little more than a run-of-the-mill USB stick so there's not a lot to say about it, though it features a trick swiveling USB connector that should make the thing more likely to work with unusual (and unusually tight) port configurations. It'll be available on November 22 for free after rebate on contract, just in time for service launches in Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami expected by the end of the year.AT&T intros USBConnect Lightning for 7.2Mbps service originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 12:54:00 EST. Gigaware dongle brings HD Radio to iPod touch and iPhone for $80
Posted on November 9, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Peripherals, Software, Apple, iPhone OS
Up until now, there have been just two ways to get HD Radio in a portable, handheld solution: buy a Zune HD, or opt for Insignia's NS-HD01. As of today, Gigaware is changing all that, and it's hoping to give HD Radio a kick in the pants by opening it up to every single iPod touch and iPhone user in the US. iBiquity's own HD Radio module has been tucked neatly inside the clickwheel dongle you see above, giving any iPhone / iPod touch with iPhone OS 3.0 (or greater) the ability to listen to HD Radio and FM stations in their area. The (now available) adapter itself sells for $79.99 exclusively at RadioShack, while the accompanying app -- which sports a manual tune wheel or auto-seek option, social network integration, bookmarks and iTunes Tagging -- is available to download free of charge. It's a novel idea, sure, but something tells us the limited availability and lofty price tag will keep it from selling like gangbusters.
