Philips shows off Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts
Posted on April 23, 2009 | No Comments
As promised, Philips has now taken the wraps off its first few Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts which, judging from Philips' boasting, could well change your life and ours. Now on display at the Euroluce International Lighting Fair in Milan, the concepts are divided into consumer and professional groups, the former of which includes ceiling-mounted products like the one pictured above, as well as some slightly more straightforward desk lamps like the one pictured after the break. What's more, each lighting device also boasts at least some degree of interactivity, including the ability to recognize hand gestures or, in the case of the professional lighting fixtures, react to passers-by. Interestingly, however, none of the products are actually full-on OLED lamps, with each also supplemented by some LUXEON Power LEDs to provide some more usable lighting.Continue reading Philips shows off Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts

Sony to finally unveil larger-screen OLED TVs at IFA?
Posted on April 19, 2009 | No CommentsWe've been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we're growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that's larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September. Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that "IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies," hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We're also told that more "ultra-widescreen" 21:9 sets -- like Philips' masterpiece -- could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz. Needless to say, IFA's shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st.

Philips’ OLED Lumiblade showcased in variety of shapes, sizes, and colors this month in Milan
Posted on April 17, 2009 | No CommentsIf you're planning to be in Milan later this month, and we know a good lot of you are, we suggest stopping by Superstudio Piú in Zona Tortona between April 22 and 27 to check out Philips' OLED Lumiblade exhibit. The company's promising lighting with dozens of different shapes, sizes and colors will be on display. Can't say we'd necessarily call OLED a "magic material," as the press release does multiple times, but with illuminated designs like this, they're putting up a good argument. Now how about bringing some of these fancy designs to the mass market?

Tough economic times cause Philips to axe a dimension, get by with just two
Posted on April 15, 2009 | No CommentsMany people are giving up many things to get by in this dire recession, things like vacations, new cars, and highly expensive though well deserved plastic surgery procedures to finally deliver the pectoral definition that nature and daily push-ups won't. Sacrifices all, but perhaps none as big as that made by Philips, which is getting rid of an entire dimensional plane and going strictly 2D. Last year the company talked up display after display after display with glasses-free 3D tech, but now they, along with the company's entire 3D Solutions division, are all being scrapped in favor of more immediately profitable endeavors. So, who wants to buy a vibrating jacket?Filed under: Displays

Wearable blood pressure monitor: portable and fashionable
Posted on April 10, 2009 | No CommentsWe've seen some wild ideas when it comes to blood pressure -- including, yes, underpants -- but this newest device, a small monitor attached to the hand, which can be worn 24 hours a day for continuous monitoring, strikes us as having the potential for extreme usefulness. The monitor works differently than regular old blood pressure cuff, using a method called pulse wave velocity, which measures the pulse at two points along an artery. Built by a team of engineers at MIT, this prototype could boast a lot of advantages over monitors, including its portability, its ability to see long-term patterns of rises and falls in pressure, and of course -- you wouldn't have to be at the doctor's office to use it -- which is bound to take a little stress out of the equation. The device is moving toward commercial production and Harry Asada, leader of the MIT team, sees the possibility for monitoring conditions such as sleep apnea in the future as well.Filed under: Misc. Philips GoGear Aria, Opus, ViBE and Mix hands-on, launch info
Posted on April 7, 2009 | No CommentsPhilips announced its GoGear Aria and Opus players for Europe back in February, but they've finally got around to showing off the units Stateside, along with offering prices, a timeframe, and a bit of company. The 2-inch screened Aria lands this month in 8GB and 16GB versions for $80 and $100, respectively; the 2.8-inch QVGA Opus does 8GB at $100, with a 16GB model in the wings; the teensy new ViBE has a 1.5-inch screen and comes in 4GB and 8GB flavors for $50 and $60; and there's a new little thumb DAP called the Mix, which is short on details. All the DAPs have FM radio and mics, and all but the Mix can do video. They also include trial subscriptions to and support for Rhapsody and Audible, along with a little browser widget to download YouTube videos and load them to the player -- a nice touch. Still, the line is pretty lackluster; we played with the players briefly, and while the design is getting better, there's still a lot of wasted space, mundane controls and ancient-seeming software -- we suppose you get what you pay for. We did appreciate Opus' inclusion of FLAC and OGG support, and its build quality really puts the rest of the line to shame.Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

Shapeways rapid prototyping service enters the brass age
Posted on March 24, 2009 | No CommentsWe’ve been in love with Philips off-shoot Shapeways for months now and the service just got nominally better. While you can still fab in plastic, today you will be able to fabricate the first 3D items in brass, a cool and unusual addition to the Shapeways service. Right now you can only create brass “ring poems” [...] -
What movies would you want to ‘feel’ while wearing this Philips jacket?
Posted on March 20, 2009 | No CommentsOh the things engineers do when they're bored and forced to look busy. Philips will debut, at a conference in Salt Lake City (of all places), a jacket with built-in vibration motors. The point is to study how people physically react to watching movies. Suggested first movie: Caligula.

Philips wants to get you in the movies — or at least into a goofy vibrating jacket
Posted on March 20, 2009 | No Comments
Philips has definitely done more for sensory immersion than most with its amBX line of... things, but a general shortage of people willing to mount fans or rumbling wrist rests on their keyboards hasn't kept the company from developing what it thinks is next: a vibrating jacket. The unnamed and triangle-patterned coat features 64 little rumblers distributed throughout, all powered by a pair of AA batteries. The intent is to better immerse you into movies by, say, replicating a light touch running up either arm or simulating an actor's beating heartbeat -- "emotional immersion" they call it. We're not so sure this will be any more compelling than the vibrating vests companies have been trying to sell gamers (and the military) for years, but we do know that Philips had better watch out for lawyers from Immersion.

Philips’ transparent OLED lighting for post-modern identity masking, toilets
Posted on March 6, 2009 | No CommentsWe're still looking at another 3 to 5 years of development here, but transparent OLED lighting panels are definitely on the way. This 12-centimeter prototype panel developed by Philips Research is transparent until flipping the switch for illumination. Unfortunately, the panels are currently limited in size due to complexities in the manufacturing process that necessitate a clean-room environment. Ultimately though, larger panels will replace "dumb glass" in household windows and stall dividers in trendy Germany toilets. What, haven't been to Berlin lately?

TabletKiosk intros MediSlate MCA i1040XT for healthcare professionals
Posted on March 5, 2009 | No Comments
We've already seen a few devices based on Intel's Mobile Clinical Assistant platform, but TabletKiosk looks to be raising the bar slightly with its new MediSlate MCA i1040XT which, among other things, is apparently the only such device with a sunlight-readable touchscreen. This being TabletKiosk, the device is also ruggedized and rated for drops of up to four feet, and it's fully sealed to resist spills and hold up to hospital disinfectants. Otherwise, you can expect a Core 2 Solo ULV processor, 2GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, two hot-swappable battery bays to keep things running all day, an optional 3G data card, and a whole slew of built-in bonuses, including a barcode scanner, an RFID reader, a fingerprint reader, and a 2 megapixel webcam. What's more, while TabletKiosk is obviously targeting medical professionals, it seems like it's also more than happy to sell one to anyone else interested, as the tablet's now up for order on its website for $2,795.

Video Review: Philips Prestigo SRT 9320 fancy-pants touchscreen remote control
Posted on February 27, 2009 | No CommentsThere's an episode of Seinfeld (“The Slicer”) where George and Jerry discuss the merits of skin care and the skin care industry. Neither of them think very highly of either—at one point, George tells Jerry that all you need to do to take care of your skin is “wash it, dry it, move on!” That's how I've always felt about remote controls: there's no need to complicate the celebrated procession of turning on and off the TV and DirecTV receiver, of opening and closing the DVD or Blu-ray player; there's sure as hell no need to shell out hundreds of dollars merely to lower the volume of your sound system with a shinier piece of plastic than the one that came in the box. So I've always believed, at least; and to an extent, still do. But you know what, gosh darn it, after using the Philips Prestigo SRT 9320, I've come this close to reconsidering my anti-fancy remote position. (I know for a fact that, broadly speaking, I have a problem with “luxury,” wether it be fancy remotes or fancy restaurants; it's the peasant in me.) If I had never heard of the remote my life wouldn't be all that different; but, I don't know, as a piece of consumer electronics, as example of what can be engineered, well done to the crazy Dutchies at Philips.

LG denies plasma TV withdraw claims
Posted on February 27, 2009 | No Comments
News broke yesterday that LG was investigating quitting the plasma biz, but now George Mead, the Marketing Manager for Digital Displays at LG Electronics UK, is denying these claims. He told T3 that "LG Electronics UK has no intention to withdraw from the Plasma TV market." Oh, see what he did there? LG Electronics UK. Nice, but what 'bout us Americans?

Cheaper Blu-Ray (licenses) on the way
Posted on February 26, 2009 | No Comments
Recession got you down? Have no fear, because now you can spend your way to happiness thanks to a potential 40 percent drop in the price of Blu-Ray players, thereby making them about $200 as opposed to $5 million. Oh, wait a minute. This is only on Blu-Ray licensing, so manufacturers will have to only pay $9.50 for a read-only BR player and 11 cents for disks. Sorry. You'll basically be saving pennies.

Cheaper discs? Panasonic, Philips, Sony plan joint Blu-ray licence
Posted on February 25, 2009 | No CommentsPanasonic, Philips and Sony today announced they joint forces to consolidate the Blu-ray licensing business. The aim is to offer a single license that not only covers patents for Blu-rays but also DVDs and CDs. If things go well, we as consumers could get cheaper movies, music or games in the process. Full press release after the jump.
