Adobe announces Creative Suite 5, wallets flinch
Posted on April 12, 2010 | No Comments
Adobe made it official today, the CS5 package is now available for pre-order. You can also order just the bits and pieces you want, if you don't want to drop $1,899 for the full monty. Photoshop CS5 is looking particularly tasty, with the new content-aware fill at the top of my list of stuff I want to check out. Take a look at the demo video after the jump.

The GigaPan Epic Pro is now shipping to eager photographers
Posted on March 19, 2010 | No Comments
The GigaPan Epic Pro was the Gigapan we were waiting for it. It's, well, professionally epic and capable of using nearly any DSLR camera/lens available thanks to its large magnesium chassis. It was originally going to start shipping sometime in April, but apparently something changed because we just got word from the company itself that its available now.

Is this the greatest photo ever?
Posted on March 18, 2010 | No CommentsIs this the greatest photo in the world? Apparently so! It’s a 26-gigapixel (!), 220-degree panorama of Paris. If it’s not the greatest photo in the world, then, according to its photographers, then it’s certainly the largest. You have to visit the site to appreciate it, obviously. -
Apple has a solution for the iPad’s missing SD card slot and USB port: adapters
Posted on January 27, 2010 | No Comments
Don't you worry about the iPad lacking an SD card slot and USB port. Apple has you covered with adapters! How nice of Lord Jobs. Instead of building in two industry standards, users are forced to buy extra items with their new iPad. It's not like the these standards are large and would take away from the oh-so-important design.
But it really is ridiculous that the iPad doesn't have an SD card slot built-in. USB port, fine. Apple is sticking with its massive dock connector, but an SD card slot -- or microSD card slot -- would actually open the iPad to some niche markets.

You know, you could have just asked me to put my camera away, Mr. Drunk With Power bouncer
Posted on January 9, 2010 | No CommentsWhy do nightclub bouncers think they're above the law? I attended a Divx party at some place called Moon at the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas for CES. (Divx actually has some neat stuff on the way, but that's a matter for another day.) Like always, I had my camera, a Canon DSLR, hanging around my neck. This, having a camera, wasn't an issue at the Divx party, which ended at 11:00pm, but it most certainly became an issue a few hours later. Photographers take note! Following the Divx party, which was 100 percent okie dokie, another one started up. People were welcome to stay at Moon just that it was no longer a Divx event. I think the new party had something to do with the Adult Video Awards or whatever. With this new party, apparently, came new rules, rules that were not made clear to attendees who had stayed over from Divx. The rule that got me in hot water: no cameras allowed.

Oh Lord No. LG Shows 12MP Camera Phone
Posted on July 9, 2009 | No CommentsHey, LG. Didn’t you get the memo? The one that said ”12 megapixels is enough? In a real camera? We guess not. LG now joins Samsung in the “prestigious” 12 megapixel telephone category with its prototype Louvre, which we presume is named for the Paris museum and not the slatted wooden door. The portable telephone also [...] -
Review: Leica D-LUX 4
Posted on July 8, 2009 | No Comments
Leica has a stranglehold on the the hearts and minds of photographers everywhere. Even if the professionals call it a "dentist's camera," as in a camera that is popular with folks with too much money and not many photography chops, there's something about that little red dot that is as iconic as the black and white of a Speedmaster or the clean lines of a Ferrari GTO. It's something that survived the ravages of time relatively unscathed - perhaps worn down by evolution and advancement but still, at least to the part of the brain that desires comfort in the permanence of the material, the same.

There's a certain enthusiastic group of photographers out there that love to use really cheap and unpredictable cameras to create amazing pictures. The problem is, most of them use film, which is becoming harder and harder to find these days.
