New bicycle helmet wafts stinky cheese smell from your head when you fall

As if falling off your bike weren’t embarrassing enough, now some German scientists have created a helmet that starts to stink when its cracked, thereby alerting you – and your loved ones – of potential danger. It’s actually a great idea. When you fall, you put stress on the helmet. The resulting cracks could lead to [...]

Surprise: Iron Man 2 nowhere near as good as the first one

That's funny. When I last wrote about Iron Man 2, I had guessed that Scarlett Johansson would be the only reason to see the movie, and it looks like I was right! The first review of the movie has been published, and it includes this: "Meanwhile, [Johansson] struts through the film in various stages of dress and undress, which might be the best thing about Iron Man 2 for its younger male fans." Other than that? The movie is hot garbage. Go figure.

Garmin nüvi 3700 series part of the pre-crime unit

I think the standalone GPS device is all but dead – I’m a pessimist that way and I know that your parents and mine both use standalone GPSes but that’s because we never showed them how to use the ones on their phones – but Garmin is still churning out some nice-looking models. The members [...]

There will be a Red Faction movie. Let that sink in for a moment.

Wow, someone has been tricked into making a Red Faction movie. That blows my mind. I base this on the first Red Faction for the PS2, which I don't recall enjoying at all. Maybe it'll be the first time we say the opposite of, "Eh, the book was better."

Here’s the latest A-Team trailer and you must watch it

I was going to work in “I pitty the fool” phrase into that headline but you’ve already been subject to enough lame jokes seeing as it’s April Fool’s Day. But seriously, you must watch this trailer. Tits is the only word to properly describe it. [via Giz]

Windows update causes Windows XP to freak out

Microsoft makes it so hard to like Windows. The company released an update on Tuesday that seems to have borked a number of Windows XP installations. There's a number of message board threads wherein people are complaining that, since the update, their computers boot right to a blue screen of death. Sigh.

Michael Dell shows off the Mini 5, confirms US arrival?

The Dell Mini 5, Dell's Android-powered Snapdragon slate, popped up at CES this year but we never got a clear look at it. However, when the CEO of Dell rolls into the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, he can show off anything he wants and our boss got a quick hands-on in the Swiss slush. To recap, the Mini 5 is a 1GHz Snapdragon-powered netpad (did I just coin a phrase?) running Android 1.6 with 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G mobile. It should be selling for $1,098 before carrier subsidy.

  • How many times do you have to be burned by BlackBerry to consider your options?

How many times do you have to be burned by BlackBerry to consider your options?

What's the phrase? Oh, yeah: Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. BlackBerry went down yesterday across North and South America. Users couldn't send or receive e-mail, and some complained that they couldn't connect to the Internet. It's the second time in a week that BlackBerry has failed. Considering how important the service is to some people—I dare you to go to Wall Street and not see everyone using the device—you really do wonder: how long will people tolerate this shoddy service? It also raises the related question of, How wise is it to rely on "the cloud" to host all of your important data? Surely you wouldn't leave "mission critical" information in the hands of someone else, someone who's unsettling opaque when it comes to explaining outages?

Motorola Opus One caught on video, dawg
It's pretty rare that a tech demo starts with the phrase "you know what I'm gonna do?" But, this one certainly does, a dark, shaky, but thoroughly comprehensive exploration of the recently rumored Motorola Opus One smartphone. Jive- or profanity-averse readers (or anyone who hates zebra cake) will probably want to skip the four videos embedded below, but we'll give you the highlights: iDen is confirmed, Android 1.5 Cupcake is currently installed with Motoblur frosting, there's a five megapixel camera on the back, and with its push-to-talk this one looks to be going to Nextel or Boost Mobile. Those are the deets, but click on through if you want to do that video, dawg.

Hai Karate! The Black Belt Watch is for black belts only

Remember those watches made out of pieces of the Titanic? Or that watch with the little moon lander on it? Well Yvan Arpa, the nutso horologist behind those treats has finally hit the a new level of crazy. Homeboy is a has a black belt and, in order to honor his fellow black belts, he's created a watch just for black belts. It's a watch for black belts only. And it costs about $4,000. The site accepts applications for their watches and the design takes queues from other martial arts including creating hands that look like Shinai, wooden Kendo swords.

Apple sells only 5,000 official iPhones in China

Not that this should surprise anyone, but Apple has sold only 5,000 iPhones since last week when it officially launched. The phrase “officially launched” is key, since people there have been able to buy the iPhone on the gray market for some time now. And it's a superior phone on the grey market, since the official phone doesn't have Wi-Fi. That's right: a smartphone nearly in 2010 that doesn't have Wi-Fi.

Maybe, maybe not: New doubts on Blu-ray being part of the next iMac revision

I'm not about to knock myself out for noting the 800th iMac rumor of the past few weeks, so here's the deal: people “close” to Apple now aren't sure whether or not Blu-ray will wind up on the next iMac revision. Blu-ray may be on Mac Pros, and maybe then only as a build-to-order option, but that's enough “maybes” to bore a slug.
