InFocus (a projector company, btw) sold for $39 million
Posted on April 15, 2009 | No Comments
InFocus was once one of the biggest names in the projector market, but they company has been mysteriously quite over the last year or two. (I wondered why there was an InFocus booth at CEDIA in 2008.) Probably cause things weren't going all that well at InFocus HQ. Hopefully now that the company was picked up by Holdings Corporation for about $0.95 a share or $39 million, we'll start to see innovative projectors from the company once again.

Pioneer outlines KURO plasma exit, insinuates that you should buy one now
Posted on March 24, 2009 | No CommentsOkay, so maybe that harshly translated version of Pioneer's recent KURO-related press release doesn't actually encourage prospective buyers to snag a unit while they still can, but it may as well have. Following up on the outfit's curious decision to abandon a product line that was universally adored, Pioneer has decided that just four of its PDPs will stay in production until April 11th. After 3,000 or so of the KRP-500A, KRP-500M, KRP-600A and KRP-600M units have been produced, the lines will be shut down and we'll all be invited to what will undoubtedly be a tear-filled memorial service. The company has also made clear that warranty service will still be provided for an undisclosed amount of time (at least in Japan), but there has yet to be a statement made specifically regarding the North American market.

Panasonic’s CES 2009 Viera HDTVs get US pricing and dates
Posted on March 3, 2009 | No CommentsPanasonic announced a slew of Viera TVs at CES, and although we already knew when they'd be making their Japanese debut, US info has been hard to come by. That's starting to change: pricing details are leaking out, and CNET and HDGuru have managed to assemble a pretty exhaustive list of what to expect and how much it'll cost. Of interest, Panny's still going strong on the plasma tip, so those of you aching for the best picture possible but unwilling to shell out for the dead-ended Kuro will still have plenty of options -- there's a set at every point between the 42-inch 720p X1 at $899, the 50-inch 1080p S1 with a nicer NEO-PDP panel for $1,799, the 50-inch THX-certified G10 with VieraCast for $1,999 and the as-yet-unpriced, one-inch thick wireless 54-inch Z1. As for LCDs, it's a similar story at smaller sizes: you've got sets ranging from the budget $499 720p 32-inch C12 to the $1,099 120Hz 1080p 37-inch G1 with Motion Focus and a 20,000:1 contrast ratio. Check all the info at the read links; we'll be scouring the wire praying for news that Panny's bought up the Kuro tech from Pioneer.

LG denies plasma TV withdraw claims
Posted on February 27, 2009 | No Comments
News broke yesterday that LG was investigating quitting the plasma biz, but now George Mead, the Marketing Manager for Digital Displays at LG Electronics UK, is denying these claims. He told T3 that "LG Electronics UK has no intention to withdraw from the Plasma TV market." Oh, see what he did there? LG Electronics UK. Nice, but what 'bout us Americans?

Alaska Airlines starts testing satellite-based Wi-Fi services [Update]
Posted on February 26, 2009 | No Comments
Alaska Airlines has announced that they’ve started testing Row 44’s satellite-based Wi-Fi service on a handful of Boeing 737-700s. The first trial flight will take place between Seattle and San Jose (leaves Seattle at 2:20 PT today and returns on Flight 329 from San Jose back to Seattle) and the service will be free for 60 days. After today that aircraft will shift routes. No exact date has been attached to the trial (but I would assume it's today or sometime this week) andpricing hasn’t been set, but I’d imagine it’s close to what VA or AA is charging for Aircell’s Gogo service. Now watch the boring video after the jump. -
Gateway’s new TC series attempts to bridge the netbook gap
Posted on February 19, 2009 | No CommentsNetbook too small for yah? Gateway is banking that some people want the smallish footprint - and price - of a netbook, but also wants a bit more power and options. The TC Series fits that market well with a 14-inch HD screen and a $649 price. Gateway seemed to pack the TC line with the [...] -
Your iPhone Has Died of Dysentery: Oregon Trail coming for the iPhone
Posted on February 18, 2009 | No Comments
It's not that often I get giddy enough about a mobile game to write about it, yet it has somehow happened twice today. First it was Guitar Hero on Android, and now it's something that plays on the nostalgic strings of my heart like a finely tuned guitar: Oregon Trail is coming to the iPhone.

Nintendo DSi for America gets priced, dated
Posted on February 18, 2009 | No Comments
I’m glad I didn’t buy a DSi when I was in Japan the other week.
Today, Nintendo announced that the updated portable gaming system would be making its way Stateside on April 5th. But that’s not all. There’s a new color, too! At launch, there will be a black and blue DSi for $170. Wait. We actually have something that Japan doesn’t?

Pioneer ends US plasma TV output this April, axes 10,000 jobs worldwide
Posted on February 12, 2009 | No Comments
After pulling the plug on LD production just last month and saying their TV business is practically dead, Pioneer today in Tokyo hold a press conference explaining the latter move in more detail [JP, PDF]. And the details aren't pretty at all.

When can we call plasma officially dead cause the flat screen tech doesn't have much going for it anymore?
