  • Will the fancy-pants Jabulani perform at altitude at the World Cup?

Will the fancy-pants Jabulani perform at altitude at the World Cup?

Football (soccer) writers are typically terribly serious about what they do. Relax, buddy, it's just a game. A fun game, yeah, but just a game. The Guardian's Barry Glendenning does things a little bit differently: he's actually good! In a column today, Glendenning prepares us all for the inevitable complaints that will surround the Jabulani's performance at the World Cup. It's a time-honored tradition, complaining about the new ball: the ball is too heavy, the ball is too light, the ball swerves too much, the ball swerves too little, etc. Most accurate ball ever created? Obviously you haven't seen a Michael Carrick pass.

Left 4 Dead 2 DLC now available. Too bad Xbox 360 players have to pay for it.

There's pretty much no need to write this next story, especially if you're a fan, but... Valve, darling developers that they are, have released the very first DLC for Left 4 Dead 2, The Passing. I was supposed to mention this fact this morning, forgot about it, then logged into Steam to see something downloading. "What the heck is downloading? I don't remember authorizing this? Oh, it's the L4D2 DLC. Wasn't I supposed to write about that?" As you can see, I live a very exciting life.

  • How many of you would pay a monthly fee to play Call of Duty?

How many of you would pay a monthly fee to play Call of Duty?

Nobody has confirmed anything, but let's assume someone on Activision Blizzard's payroll is currently creating a massively multi-player Call of Duty game. The company's CEO, Bobby Kotick, recently expressed enthusiasm toward subscription-based games during the company's fourth quarter conference call. "If you think about the success that we've had in other product categories on subscription [presumably World of Warcraft, which had as much to do with Activision as I did with the Manhattan Project], you can get a sense of the direction that we want to take that franchise [Call of Duty]," he said. Or translated from corporate-speak into English: "You're damn right we want to make a Call of Duty MMO. Monthly fees to have people play pew-pew-pew? Yes, please." But is that a wise move?

  • Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 has leaked. So, you know.

Mass Effect 2 for the Xbox 360 has leaked. So, you know.

Oh, the ironing. Big Daddy Cool, John Biggs, just interviewed Casey Hudson, from BioWare, about Mass Effect 2. It was streamed live! The beauty is, while they were talking about the game, kids with modded Xbox 360s all over the world were already playing the game. Yes, the game has leaked. Granted, it's only a few days before the game actually comes out, but still, the biggest release of the year (so far) is now available where you find such things. I'll be getting the PC version via Steam, thank you very much. (There's nothing after this. Clicking Read More is a waste of your time.)

  • Celebrating 5 years of World of Warcraft

Celebrating 5 years of World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft turns 5-years-old today. Back on November 23, 2004, a year before the current generation of video game systems even began (with the launch of the Xbox 360), Blizzard released the massively multi-player online game at a time when massively multi-player online games were still largely the haunt of hardcore gamers, people with fast Internet connections who were willing to pay $15 per month for access to a game that they already bought. Who can forget the message board threads: Why do I have to pay for a game that I already paid for at the store? How do you beat the game? What happens if and when I stop playing?

The early days of John Madden Football

MaddenGreat article over at Edge Online for anyone interested in the early days of EA's John Madden Football franchise. Did you know that one of the first versions of the game was initially 7-on-7 due to memory limitations? Madden himself put the kibosh on that one right away, saying, "What’s this seven-on-seven? This isn’t football. If my name’s going to be on something it’s got to be 11-on-11."

Blizzard’s World of Warcraft Armory App for iPhone looks darn good

This is the only World of Warcraft iPhone App you'll ever need. Blizzard has just released World of Warcraft Mobile Armory, which gives players of the game full access to the Armory. (The Armory tracks player and item stats and the like. It's essential for “real” players of the game.) So add this App with a few trips to WoW Wiki and Thottbot, and you're a mobile WoW warrior (but not necessarily Warrior).
