Attention: Plex for Mac now plays well with Snow Leopard
Posted on October 28, 2009 | No CommentsIt's been some time since I've written about Plex, the Mac-specific fork of XBMC that, well, is fantastic. It seems Snow Leopard somewhat borked the application, but the latest release is all fixed up. Have a peach.

Verizon’s HTC Droid Eris to run Android 1.5 on a 528MHz CPU
Posted on October 27, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, HTC, Verizon Wireless
We can certainly understand why Verizon wants to brand all of its Android devices under the "Droid" label, but at this point we can't say we understand why it's launching the HTC Droid Eris alongside the Motorola Droid at all -- BGR says it's going to run Android 1.5 on a 528MHz Qualcomm CPU, which means it'll be instantly obsoleted by Android 2.0 on the Moto's OMAP3 at launch. What's more, it sure seems like Verizon knows it's mismanaging this situation, as we haven't heard a single peep about the Eris in the runup to the Droid launch tomorrow, even though Eric Schmidt and Lowell McAdam were waving both devices around a few weeks ago. We'll see how this all plays out -- HTC certainly has Android 2.0 phones of its own in the works, so the Eris might not be long for this world.Verizon's HTC Droid Eris to run Android 1.5 on a 528MHz CPU originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Tue, 27 Oct 2009 17:11:00 EST. Nokia plays musical execs, moves CFO to new Mobile Phones post
Posted on October 16, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Nokia
There's nothing quite like a dismal quarterly report to shake things up, and that's exactly what Nokia's doing after losing over $800 million in its most recent three-month period. CFO Rick Simonson is being whisked over to a new post as head of the Mobile Phones group -- concentrating on Series 30 and Series 40 handsets -- within the Devices division, while Timo Ihamuotila, who currently leads up global sales, will take over for the CFO position being vacated by Simonson. For what it's worth, the move doesn't seem like a demotion for Simonson; he'll be in charge of "strategic sourcing" for the entire Devices division and still sit on the executive board, so we're sure he'll be doing alright for himself. All things considered, there's no way of knowing whether this would've all gone down without the quarterly performance, but it makes you wonder, doesn't it?Nokia plays musical execs, moves CFO to new Mobile Phones post originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 16 Oct 2009 14:52:00 EST. Deep Green, The Pool-Playing Robot
Posted on September 17, 2009 | No Comments
You’ve heard of Deep Blue, the IBM computer that bested Gary Kasparov in a chess match a decade ago. Now, there is Deep Green, a robot that plays pool. And by the looks of this demo video, it can’t lose.
As Delicious founder, and now-Googler, Joshua Schachter points out, it is “only a matter of time before one of these kills a person.”

Street Fighter IV Real Voice is the coolest cell phone strap ever (video)
Posted on August 12, 2009 | No Comments
I've seen countless straps in my many years in cell phone-crazy Japan, but this one beats them all. The so-called "Street Fighter IV Real Voice" is essentially a mini joystick that plays the voice samples that follow a number of special moves in the game. All sounds from the major attacks Chun Li, Ken, Ryu and Dhalsim can pull off are there - provided you're skilled enough with your hands.

New pen scans invisible codes in texts and pics, then plays back related audio
Posted on June 19, 2009 | No Comments
A company called Apollo Japan has developed the so-called Speakun [JP], a pen-shaped device that's able to read invisible codes printed on paper and then plays back pre-recorded sounds. Users first have to scan special, dot-shaped codes (0.04mm in diameter) that are associated with pictures or texts on a piece of paper.

Adapter plays HD files off of any hard drive
Posted on June 1, 2009 | No Comments
For all the fluff that generally pours out of Brando's website, there's always a diamond in the rough here and there. This one seems to be more diamond than rough. It's basically an adapter that turns any 3.5- or 2.5-inch hard drive into an HD video player for your TV. It'll also push out files from SD cards and USB thumb drives as well.
