The Viliv P3 Prime shows up as expected
Posted on May 25, 2010 | No Comments
The Viliv P3 made its first appearance at CES 2010. The company even had a demo unit for everyone to play with but it was just that, a demo. We couldn't see the Windows CE/Android dual booting or if the unit could actually play back 1080p content like Viliv states. Maybe now that the PMP is featured on Viliv's site, its launch is right around the corner. But then if Viliv follows its own trend, we'll have to wait months for the unit to be imported to the States from South Korea. So we wait.

The Viliv HD5 PMP breaks loose, released in South Korea
Posted on May 17, 2010 | No Comments
We're big Viliv fans here and are glad to see the companies first PMP hit the market. They are one of the few companies that out nearly identical products in the states as Korea. The don't dumb-down its products for the American consumer. Nope, we get all the fun stuff, too. Like the HD5 PMP. Now, we just need a valid reason to need a PMP in 2010.

Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass
Posted on December 23, 2009 | No CommentsCorning's darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn't new -- in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing's tablets just a few months ago -- but it's still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. SmartPlanet sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola's Droid and Dell's Adamo (not to mention Cowon's S9 PMP) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays "damage-resistant." Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It's a pretty interesting read if you're into that type of thing, and yes, we did just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don't count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.

AV Bank Dodeka: Thanko’s pretty decent looking 7-inch media player
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsTokyo-based crap USB gadget vendor Thanko does roll out devices from time to time that are not that crappy. And their so-called AV Bank Dodeka [JP], a media player that boasts a 7-inch screen (iPhone: 3.5 inches), seems to be one of those. It's a major upgrade to the AV Bank Thanko started selling just last month. The Dodeka's LTPS screen has a 800×480 resolution and can double as a digital picture frame. It features 8GB of internal memory but also supports microSD/SDHC cards (up to 16GB). Videos can be viewed in AVI/MPEG/FLV/MP4/MOV/PMP/DAT/VOB/RM/ or RMVB format. The player also plays MP3s and displays JPEG/GIF/ and BMP photo files.

The Samsung R1 is a PMP, all right
Posted on August 31, 2009 | No CommentsThe “anybody but iPod” crowd has another portable media player to choose from, and it's from Samsung. It's called the R1, and it's your standard issue touchscreen PMP. It does play Divx-encoded video, which should be a benefit to those of you who haven't moved into Blu-ray rips, or who enjoy watching standard-def rips of TV shows on the subway.

The Archos 2 Vision doesn’t look that great in person
Posted on August 21, 2009 | No Comments
A product shot appeared a few days ago of the Archos 2 Vision. It looked nice. But the French site ArchosLounge.net recently got some face time with the upcoming PMP and, well, it doesn't look that great anymore. The original press shot looked slick and smooth, but this hands-on shot makes it looks like a no-name Chinese player. It's an Archos so it probably runs great, but I hope I'm not the only one disappointed with the design.

Philips GoGear Opus reviewed: solid audio, but painfully boring
Posted on May 31, 2009 | No CommentsWhen we had the downright magnificent opportunity to toy with Philips' latest PMP line here in the States, we immediately noticed that the GoGear Opus stood out among the rest. The crew over at TrustedReviews recently spent some quality time with the 8GB version of that very unit, and while they found the audio quality to be "excellent," they seemed rather disappointed -- if not irked -- by everything else in the package. For starters, the whole solution just felt boring, with critics noting that its biggest problem was a lack of "excitement." Granted, none of this would matter at a rock-bottom price point, but for $100, there's an awful lot of competition. As we found during our short time with the player, these folks also noticed that the user interface was simply "old-fashioned," and that video playback was nothing to write home about. The bottom line? Unless you score some kind of spectacular deal, your PMP dollars are probably best spent elsewhere.Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

iRiver P35 headed to the US this fall
Posted on May 26, 2009 | No Comments
It certainly doesn't seem to have been in a rush to bring it to these shores, but iriver has now finally announced (in teaser form) that its P35 PMP will indeed be getting an official US release... this fall. That will version will obviously ditch the DMB TV found in its Korean counterpart, but it should be otherwise identical, including up to 16GB of storage (plus an SDHC card slot), a 4.3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, a full-fledged web browser (on the WiFi version, at least), a promised 16 hours of battery life (or seven for video) and, of course, iriver's trademark SPINN controls. No word on pricing just yet, as you might have guessed, but the Korean version started at the local equivalent of $286.Filed under: Portable Audio, Portable Video

We're sure to see a ton of small portable media players this week at CES and these from Samsung are just two of them. The Samsung MyFit is aimed at fitness junkies, while trendy kids will probably opt for the IceTouch. They both are candybar-type devices and playback media, but that's where the similities end.
