  • Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass

Motorola Droid and Dell Adamo latest to get Gorilla glass

Corning's darn-near-impenetrable Gorilla glass certainly isn't new -- in fact, we spied it in a few of Motion Computing's tablets just a few months ago -- but it's still not commonplace on mainstream gizmos. Yet. SmartPlanet sat down with Dr. Donnell Walton, senior applications engineer at Corning, in order to discuss the merits of the display technology as well as its importance in the gadget space. The discussion also mentioned that both Motorola's Droid and Dell's Adamo (not to mention Cowon's S9 PMP) are sporting the glass, which acts to make displays "damage-resistant." Not surprisingly, the company is seeing huge demand in the smartphone arena, where touchscreen-centric phones are being shoved into pockets at random and then costing manufacturers big bucks as return rates creep up. It's a pretty interesting read if you're into that type of thing, and yes, we did just give you permission to try and split your Droid display wide open in a moment of frustration. Just don't count on Motorola to accept that as a valid excuse for your RMA.

    [Thanks, Jeff]

Heated portable chair costs $120, makes being outside slightly less miserable

If you've ever spent an extended period of time outside during the late fall or winter watching some sort of parade, sporting event, or interpretive dance, you'll have no doubt A) had plenty of time to re-examine your life and B) wished you’d brought a chair. Now add C) to that list: wished the chair you didn’t bring was heated.

    Thank you, Columbus, Ohio!

If you weren't at the Surly Girl Saloon last night for the Columbus CrunchGear meetup, then you were somewhere else! You missed John sporting a new pair of Onion Goggles. You missed a nerd-a-thon comparing the Droid, HD2, iPhone, Dream, and whatever other handhelds folks could dig out of their pockets. And you missed an opportunity to put your grubby paws on not only the TwitterPeek but also the Nokia Booklet!

Original Body HTC Heros with US 3G coming soon – but you’ll have to import

If your pockets are just beggin' to be filled with an HTC Hero, your options thus far (assuming you're in the US) have been limited. You could get one through Sprint or wait for Verizon's Hero-esque Droid Eris - but either of those options means you're on a modified, round-bodied Hero rather than the angled, chin-tastic Hero that nearly 70% of our readers prefer. You could import one of the original bodied Heros from the UK - but then you wouldn't be able to get 3G on any US Carrier. If you wanted US 3G and an original Hero, you were out of luck - until now.

  • Motorola Droid already getting accessorized

    Motorola Droid already getting accessorized

If there's one thing that's sure to break a new Droid owner's heart, it's scratching the hell out of it -- or worse yet, dropping it to its untimely death. Wouldn't that be a tragedy? Of course, one quick and dirty way to avoid a lot of that heartache is to equip your phone with a beefy protective case, and from what we're seeing here, it looks like there won't be any problem whatsoever finding such cases on day one of the Droid's availability (whenever that happens to be). What we've got here is a third-party case (excuse us -- "carrying solution") that's popped up over at Best Buy Mobile, though interestingly, the Droid's model number of A855 is being featured far more prominently than the catchy name itself. Given the look of this thing, we think you'll need to have an extreme dedication to preserving your phone's rugged handsomeness to actually equip it, but hey, more power to you -- meanwhile, we'll carry on with letting our phones rustle around with coins, keys, pens, and switchblades in our pockets.

Belarus officially supports radiation-proof cellphone pockets for kids

You and I both know that the only way to prevent dangerous EF radiation is by wrapping your cellphone in cling-film and aluminum foil and then battering it and frying it in cornmeal. The resulting phonedog is safe and delicious. Sadly, the Belarussian government is instead depending on specially lined pockets in school uniforms that will keep radiation away from the kids special body parts.
