Layar debuts new augmented reality browser, bets big on content discovery
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No Comments
Layar is today unveiling the latest iteration of its Reality Browser product (3.5), starting with an Android version, with an iPhone 3GS app update scheduled for later. With the new version of the browser, users can now easily discover and experience Augmented Reality without the need to enter a search query or open a specific layer.
This means users can instantly see the most interesting content nearby upon launching the browser, effectively turning it into a potent location-based search and discovery service with an augmented reality element attached to it rather than the other way around.

Web now supports non-Latin characters for addresses
Posted on May 6, 2010 | No CommentsPretty important day in the history of the World Wide Web, if not the Internet as a whole. ICANN, sorta the Internet's regulator, will for the first time now allow non-Latin characters for Web addresses. That means that, if we wanted, sometime in the future we could register a Russian version of CrunchGear.com at KPYHЧГИP.PYC (that's just an example, who knows what the actual Russian country code will be). Took them long enough!

New market study shows iPhone continues to be big in Japan
Posted on April 23, 2010 | No CommentsA lot has been written on how the iPhone performs in Japan, the world's most advanced mobile nation, but the general consensus in this country now is that it sells very well (even though both Apple and provider SoftBank Mobile refuse to break down Japan-specific sales numbers). It's rumored that the number of iPhones sold in Japan has passed 3 million. There are reasons for this success (super-low pricing, aggressive marketing, Apple's pre-iPhone brand popularity in Japan, clever product positioning by SoftBank, etc. etc.), but we're talking about a country in which basically every cell phone is a smartphone, a country where you'd be hard-pressed to find a handset without a digital TV tuner or e-wallet function, for example.

Apple to Europe: Zut alors! iPad isn’t arriving until May
Posted on April 14, 2010 | No Comments
Because of the rapacious greed of Americans, those in the Euro-zone will not have their iPads until May, at least according to a short release by Apple. Blaming the popularity of the iPad in the US (and potentially some issues with Wi-Fi) , European pre-orders will not arrive in your charming town or hameau until May 10. This goes for the iPad 3G version as well.
Apple, always one to toot their own trompette, hoped that Europe is happy to know that the iPad is a "runaway success." Cold comfort, I say.

Windows 7 market share growing
Posted on April 5, 2010 | No Comments
Don't look now, but Windows 7 is taking over. And while Vista is still in the number 2 spot overall, Windows 7 has reached that critical 10% milestone almost a year earlier then Vista. Having used both version of the OS, it's pretty obvious why.

Heaven forefend! Has Nintendo’s 3DS announcement killed the DSi XL?
Posted on March 31, 2010 | No CommentsNOT FOR KIDS! In all honesty, I don’t think the DSi XL is part of Nintendo’s standard line-up. It’s a reaction to the popularity of the Wii in retirement centers and is aimed at a much older – and much different audience – than the new 3D DS, aptly named the 3DS. Older folks who may [...] -
Active releases a new set of SSDs
Posted on March 8, 2010 | No Comments
Solid state hard drives are increasing in popularity mainly because more are reaching the consumer market, therefore driving down prices. But most are still a bit pricey. Active has a new 1.8-inch set, however, that's a bit more affordable if you don't mind forgoing storage capacity.

Word of warning though, make sure you wipe off your screen after you lock your phone again. Or at least wash your damn hands. [via Gizmodo] -
Bookeen Orizon: It’s an electronic book reader with multi-touch
Posted on February 17, 2010 | No CommentsExplain something to me: what is the value in having multi-touch on an electronic book reader? How often do you adjust the "zoom level" when you're reading a regular book or magazine? Not often, no; you tend to keep the book or magazine right in the sweet spot, where you can comfortably focus. So, the Bookeen Orizon. It's an electronic book reader with multi-touch, the first such reader to have multi-touch. Did I say multi-touch yet?

THQ sells 3.5 million copies of UFC: Undisputed, drops price to $30 for you lollygaggers
Posted on February 2, 2010 | No CommentsBreaking news: UFC is popular. THQ has revealed that it sold 2.5 million copies of UFC: Undisputed, its fighting game based on the UFC license. And now you know why EA is making EA Sports MMA: big, fat cash.

One number that wasn’t affected by the recession was the size of the digital universe, which grew 62% in 2009 to around 800,000 petabytes. However, the petabyte, or 1000 terabytes, is quickly becoming an obsolete unit for measuring the amount of information in the world. To remedy this we will begin to use the zettabyte, or a million petabytes (we skipped the exabyte, or 1000 petabytes). According to IDC, humanity’s total digital output is expected to pass 1.2 zettabytes this year, or 1,200,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes.
As time goes one, we're seeing technology start to show up in all kinds of unexpected places. For example: the DVD kiosk, shoe insoles, and now the pipe. And when I say pipe, I mean a "420 friendly" pipe.
