HP Slate specs leak, get compared the iPad

Uh oh! Sounds like someone is going to be in trouble. The word is out on the probable spec and pricing on the HP Slate, and HP is definitely aware of the iPad. Obviously an internal document, it's very interesting to see exactly what HP considers a threat, and what they consider to be an advantage.

The $65 Creation Tech netbook. You know it’s going to be great!

I'm not sure how useful this will be, but it sounds interesting. Chinese manufacturer Creation Tech is selling a 7 inch ultra mobile PC for $65. The specs aren't very impressive, but for that kind of money what do you expect?

IT in a box: the ClearBOX

As a full time systems administrator, I can tell you without equivocation that IT is hard. There are lots of little problems that occur. Operating systems are fragile. Automation is great, but requires constant vigilance. So I approach things like the ClearBOX with much skepticism. An all-in-one IT solution sounds too good to be true, and it very likely is. I'm sure it offers some great features, and in the right environment it can be a good purchase. But there is no holy grail to unified IT services, because every environment is different, and the only constant is change.

Not 3D but pretty, too: Sony’s seven new LCD TVs

Granted, the seven new LCD (non-3D) TVs Sony announced [JP] in Japan today are not as sexy as their 3D counterparts, but they are worth mentioning, too. The new BRAVIAs break down into three series, the NX800, the HX700 and the HDD-equipped BX-30H. In contrast to the 3D TVs presented today, Sony didn't go into details regarding international sales plans for their 2D models.

Pioneer outs the low-priced, surprisingly competent VSX-820-K and VSX-520-K AV receivers

Pioneer's latest home theater receivers aren't amazing. They're not jam-packed with all crazy one-off audio modes or loaded to the gill with connectivity options. But that's fine. It does HDMI 1.3, works with an optional $99 Bluetooth streaming thingabob, has enough power, and supports the main HD audio codecs. Oh, and they're only $229 and $299.

    Quake 3, Android style

Quake 3 has been ported to Android. It looks slick, too (see video demo below). The project is called “kwaak3” and is based on Quake 3 ports to the iPhone and Nokia N900. The developer got everything up and running on a Motorola Milestone (a GSM Motorola Droid with multi-touch, basically) and makes use of the phone’s keyboard, “so it won’t work on your Nexus One or other phone at this point,” according to the project page.

Netgear & Ericsson team up, concoct MBRN3300 3G router

Here's an interesting fact, if you really stretch the definition of the word "interesting." Team CrunchGear often used the Novatel MiFi during CES to bring you all that great content. The concept is simple: it takes a 3G signal and then outputs that signal via Wi-Fi. You then connect to the Wi-Fi network. Instant broadband, cell signal depending, for everyone. The same concept applies to the MBRN3300, a router that's the product of a Netgear-Ericsson partnership.

And the company has priced and dated the new TVs, Blu-ray recorders and players, too (at least for the Japanese market). Some of them were shown last month during the CES, there's no new word on their cool 3D camcorder, but anyway, here are the 3D TVs [JP] first.

More LED-backlit LCD TVs: Sharp announces another four models

LED-backlit panels are becoming more and more mainstream, with nearly every 16:9 laptop coming out lately boasting that feature. Apple said as early as 2008 they would start using LED backlights for every one of their notebooks (and the iPad has those, too). LED-backlit LCD TVs are catching on, too, providing greater dynamic contrast compared with CCFL-backlit LCDs and making it possible to design slimmer bodies. Today, Sharp in Japan announced [JP] another four models (LC-52SE1/pictured, LC-46SE1, LC-40SE1 and LC-32SC1) from their LED AQUOS series, and all have (white) LED backlights.

U.S. military now wants 3D surveillance cameras. Avatar invented 3D, you know.

In a sense, the following story can be summed up thus: the US military wants new, hi-tech equipment. That's not exactly breaking news, no, but there's an Avatar connection, so if the world could stop rotating on its axis for a moment... It's called Fine Detail Optical Surveillance, and the military wants Darpa to develop it. Think 3D spy cameras. Attach one to a Predator-type device and the boots on the ground—fresh-faced kids from the corn fields of Iowa—will be able to see the bad guys long before they know what's going on. Woo!
