U.S. Soccer looks to EA Sports to help develop next generation of pros

You would think that with a population of 300 million the U.S. would be a little better at soccer than it currently is. Not that the US Mens National Team is terrible—its victory against Spain in the Confederations Cup in June was all kinds of great—but we're (yup, Royal We time) not exactly known as a “world power,” mentioned in the same breath with Italy, Germany, Spain, Brazil, and Argentina. In steps... EA? Yup, we just got word that EA Sports, makers of FIFA 10, has teamed up with US Soccer to develop and promote a series of training videos that young players can use to improve their game. Is is enough to to give some future USMT the World Cup one day? US Soccer certainly has high hopes.

The joys of playing Street Fighter with your kids (and the devastation of losing)

A truly delightful tale about a parent playing against his six-year-old son in Street Fighter IV. A great father-son bonding moment, the father recoils in horror as he finds out, “Wait a minute, I'm losing to my six-year-old here. Oh, God, what have I done?”

How excited are you about District 9?

District 9 sounds like it’s going to be great. We’ve gotten lots of sleepers in the past few years - think Taken and Children of Men - and this sounds like another amazing action/sci-fi film with lots of brains. The reviews are great and the movie, based on the short film you see here, has a [...]

  • She’s my final fantasy: G4’s ‘Girl at the Video Game Store’ music video is unexpectedly really good

She’s my final fantasy: G4’s ‘Girl at the Video Game Store’ music video is unexpectedly really good

Oh, how I wanted to hate this video. Yesterday was the thousandth episode of Attack of the Show—how did you celebrate?—and while I only caught about two minutes in between commercials of whatever else I was watching (I think it was a documentary about salt; I'm not joking), I did manage to catch the tail end of this video. It's “The Girl at the Video Game Store,” a song written by Parry Gripp; the video was directed by Michael W. Shaw, of G4.

  • Is $100 cheap enough to get you to buy an iPhone?

Is $100 cheap enough to get you to buy an iPhone?

The red hot rumor going around this hour—there will be a new rumor before lunchtime, such is our attention span—is that Apple will launch a $99 iPhone at WWDC next week. One of those highly paid analyst types said such a move, that is, a $100 price cut for the lowest end model, would increase demand by 100 percent. It's not clear how dumbed down this cheap-o iPhone would be, if it's even real, so it's hard to say whether or not it'd still be “iPhone” enough to make it worth your while. But let's assume, for the purposes of this post, that it is, indeed, “iPhone” enough, even at the low, low price of $100. Is that cheap enough to get you to buy one?

Travel Honey GPS functions as a homing device, photo tagger, party favor

The last time we saw a simplified GPS homing device about, we weren't too terribly impressed. Sure, the premise was solid: press one button to lock in the position of your car (or the gold of Dresden), and it will return you to its location after your day at the mall (or after you've successfully evaded capture). But who wants to spend $80 on a glorified key fob? Not us, that's for sure. For a less pricey alternative, you might want to check out a little something called the Travel Honey. Distributed by Chinavasion, this bad boy not only functions as a stand alone unit, lighting up as you zero in on your target, but it can also connect to your PC via USB for use as a full-blown GPS unit (software not included). And if all that weren't enough, it will also log your various locations in a text file (perfect for keeping track of mileage and geotagging photos). Available now for $53.87.
