Fake Steve Jobs on the Windows 7 launch

Today’s the first day of the rest of Microsoft’s life. Windows 7 is officially available. Nearly everyone loves the OS expect for one notable person: Fake Steve Jobs. Here’s part of what he has to say about the new OS. Do you feel it in the air? That heaviness and oppression? The smell of sulfur? Yes, dear readers, [...]

  • It shouldn’t be this difficult to upgrade a hard drive

It shouldn’t be this difficult to upgrade a hard drive

You know what's a little more difficult than I first imagined? Upgrading the hard drive in my late 2006 iMac. I had initially wanted to upgrade the hard drive so I could finally dual boot between Mac OS X and Windows 7, since the old drive, a 250GB model, was pretty much filled to capacity. (Trying to run Mac OS X with only ~5GB of free space isn't ideal.) And even though the iMac user manual clearly states that the only user-replacabable parts are the RAM, I figured, “Bah! I think I can handle a simple hard drive replacement.” I did, but not before wishing I had never so much had broken out a screwdriver.

  • Interview: Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater

Interview: Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater

I recently had the privilege to interview Jordan Rudess from the progressive rock/metal band, Dream Theater, while the band was on tour. Not only is Jordan an amazing keyboard player, but he also is a big geek. So like most musicians, he combined his passion for music and technology, and released an application to the [...]

  • Panic! A new Linux exploit in the wild

Panic! A new Linux exploit in the wild

unixlinux.jpgA new "exploit" has been revealed for Linux systems running kernel 2.6.30 and 2.6.30.1. I put that in quotes for several reasons. First, those versions of the kernel haven't been rolled out to the stable releases of any major Linux distribution. So systems running the latest kernel from their distribution aren't at risk. Second, the proof-of-concept exploit code that's been released doesn't work remotely. So you need to have physical access to the system. And as anyone with any security experience will tell you, physical access trumps almost all other issues when it comes to attacking a system. Click through to learn more.

On the future of the Moxi HD DVR – with a poll

I had a long talk with Digeo’s CEO, Greg Gudorf, about the future of the Moxi HD DVR. It became clear to me right away that we saw the DVR differently. He, and presumably his company, views the Moxi HD DVR as an organic device which will grow and improve overtime. I however see it [...]

Eco Watercraft electric waverunner makes no sound, burns no fuel, zaps no fish

Eco Watercraft electric waverunner makes no sound, burns no fuel, zaps no fish
Beware Big Oil executives: EVs aren't content to just take over the morning commute. They're targeting all motorized leisure activities, and while we've already seen how an electric motorcycle can be just as much fun as a petrol-powered version, electric waverunners look to be next. The company is Eco Watercraft, pledging to build its machines in a factory powered by renewable means, thus giving the vehicles twice the green cred. The model in the videos embedded below doesn't look like it could stand a chance of keeping up with some of the more powerful watercraft on the market today, like Yamaha's ridiculous FX Cruiser SHO and its supercharger, but it should be good enough to get your kicks whilst earning fewer dirty looks from birdwatching kayakers. Now if only we knew how much that privilege will cost you.
