The top five unanswered questions about the Nintendo 3DS

The Nintendo 3DS is real -- we know that. The 3D works well -- we know that, too. But that's where our 3DS knowledge stops. Nintendo isn't talking-up 3DS details right now and we have so many questions about the handheld 3D gaming.

  • FIFA Soccer 11, Pro Evolution Soccer 11 first details

FIFA Soccer 11, Pro Evolution Soccer 11 first details

Both EA and Konami have revealed details regarding the next FIFA, called FIFA Soccer 10 in the U.S., and Pro Evolution Soccer, called Pro Evolution Soccer 11, games, respectively. The first detail: they exist. There was approximately a zero percent chance that EA and Konami wouldn't continue with the franchises, but you and I know that big corporations make terrible decisions all the time. EA's big new feature is called Personality+, and it aims to make each player in the game as much like the player in real life. That is, Messi should be able to waltz pass defenders in-game as he does for Barcelona week in, week out, while Michael Carrick should be able to complete one pass in 50 as he does for Manchester United. (Exaggerated for effect. folks, so calm down.)

Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

Well, this is just great timing. What we're looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster -- who has a solid track record -- says it's only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we're also told that internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we'll call off the rally.

Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install. Oh, and it's launching in the fall.

The PSP 2 will be ‘[expletive] powerful’

There will be a PSP 2. No, not some sort of halfway sequel, à la the PSP Go, but an actual, holy smokes PSP 2. That's the rumor, and you'd have to assume that's the case. But the specifics of the rumor, today's incarnation of the rumor, that is, is that the device will be "[expletive] powerful." That's pretty powerful!

  • Sony sales numbers reveal surging PS3, waning PSP

Sony sales numbers reveal surging PS3, waning PSP

Sony just released the numbers from the last fiscal year (April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010). The good news (for Sony and its shareholders, at least) is that PS3 sales were up quite a bit from the previous year, going from 10.1 million sold to 13 million this year. The bad news is that PSP sales have hit a bump in the road, going from 14.1 million in to 9.9 million. Translating those numbers into English, that means that the PS3 is doing a heck of a lot better than it ever was, and that the PSP, well, isn't.

I guess Apple is serious about gaming now. It just announced, as one of its many iPhone "pillars," the development of GameCenter, which our man on the scene, Greg Kumparak, described as "Xbox Live for the iPhone." Match-making, leaderboards, achievement points, the works.

This Nintendo 3DS concept looks like a DS and PSP offspring

We've always admired the PSP's sleek exterior, but loved the DS's fun games. We're weird like that. But maybe, although it's highly unlikely, the next DS incarnation will combine some of the PSP's trademark style with the DS's functionality. If so, the 3DS would probably look something like this concept art.
