Wowza. Consider me impressed. It took Microsoft 3 years to develop Windows Phone 7 Series -- but its only taken 2 weeks for some far-too-talented dabbler to recreate the look and feel of the new OS as a skin for older Windows Mobile handsets, relying on nothing but screenshots and demo videos.
Get ready for tons of fake Windows Phone 7 videos and people saying "No! Seriously! I swear my buddy has Windows Phone 7 on his 3 year old WinMo handset!".

Check your calendar, friends, for the first time in a long time I was just wowed by a tech story. Google says it's working on smartphone software that would automatically translate foreign languages into your native tongue. So, if you're talking to your Venezuelan pen pal, and he says, "No me gusta el fútbol americano," you can react in horror as you try to explain to him the importance of a game where more time is spent setting up plays than actually executing them is the greatest sport in the world. iPhone and Magic Mouse linked up by BTstack (video)
Posted on January 4, 2010 | No CommentsEven though you probably still can't figure out what good the ability to connect your Bluetooth keyboard to your iPhone will do, the BTstack project is steaming ahead with this demo of a connected Magic Mouse twirling its pointer all over Apple's handset. The driver code is still unreleased, but we get to see some nice lag-free interaction between the two devices, suggesting it shouldn't be too far away from public consumption. As if to answer your earlier quandary, the video also features a Celluon CL800BT virtual keyboard, which projects onto and responds to your touch of any flat surface. A gimmick most likely, but a fun journey into the dream of nomadic computing nonetheless. Check out all the action after the break.

Ericsson demos 42Mbps HSPA Evolution for the laypeople

Talk about making good on a promise... and then some. Back in March, Ericsson proudly proclaimed that it would be able to make 21Mbps look like child's play by reaching 28Mbps before the dawn of 2010, and now the company is tooting its horn once more after demonstrating 42Mbps equipment to common folk over in Stockholm, Sweden. Reportedly, it's the planet's first 42Mbps HSPA achievement on commercial products, and better still, it's now available for mass deployment. Unfortunately, details beyond that were few and far between -- we're guessing Ericsson just needed an avenue to gloat -- but we suspect carriers like Telstra will be pushing out their own releases once the upgrades start rolling out. Granted, we've seen mobile data rates tickle the 42Mbps mark before, but those showcases were hardly ready for public consumption. Meanwhile, Verizon and AT&T are spending bundles arguing about their comparatively glacial "3G networks." World of Worldcraft in China: The story that never ceases to befuddle

The rules over there are such that Blizzard just can't open up shop, but has to contract a local company to run the game for Chinese users. Fair enough, and Blizzard has contracted NetEase to do such a thing. The problem is that NetEase keeps running into problems getting the game's expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, approved for public consumption.

Right on cue, the smaller-but-just-barely N97 mini is now ready for public consumption over in Europe. Granted, we're certainly at the tail end of October, but we can't say that we caught Nokia in a lie or anything based on what was said last month in Stuttgart. You've already committed the specifications to memory and read all about firmware 2.0, so now all that's left to do is run along, fork out €450 ($667) and wonder forever if this decision will positively or negatively change the course of your life.

The Viliv X70 is finally available and shipping from Dynamism

I loved the Viliv X70. It's a great UMPC and it's finally available for public consumption from Dynamism. The pre-orders took a little longer to ship than expected, but now that those are done, the X70 is available for everyone. Better yet, you can expect it to ship out the same day you place your order. Now, the smaller, but still hot, S5 is a different story.
