Hey, Google: Check out this ultra-fast book scanner

Wikipedia says Google is using a special camera that's able to scan books at a rate of 1,000 pages per hour, which doesn't sound bad at all (I am talking about Google Books of course, the company's online collection of digitized books ). But now a team at the elite University of Tokyo has announced the development of a device that can scan a 1,000-page book in four minutes.

  • The Queen’s Digital English: The Kindle is coming to the UK

The Queen’s Digital English: The Kindle is coming to the UK

Seems our compatriots across the sea will have the Amazon Kindle as soon as next week. "Reliable sources" have confirmed that the publishers involved signed non-disclosure agreements, adding weight to our previous suspicions that the e-book reader would be available in Britain this fall. It's all quite a cloak-and-dagger event. Amazon's current wireless provider, Qualcomm, seems to be the one that will handle the magical spells wireless solution that gives Kindle owners access to an entire library in their pocket.

Make music: The PSP version of Beaterator is available today. iPhone users have to wait a little while yet.

Rockstar's Beaterator comes out today (and so does Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days... you couldn't find two more different publishers in Rockstar and Square Enix) for the PSP. We've highlighted it in the past because A) Timbaland is one of the better “big name” producers out there and B) I have spent more than a few hours in Ableton Live and the like. It's familiar territory, in other words.

Tokyo Game Show: A look at the Square Enix, Xbox360 and Capcom booths

I posted some pictures of Sony's and Ubisoft's booth at this year's Tokyo Game Show yesterday, but booth-wise, Square Enix, Microsoft (Xbox 360) and Capcom made quite a strong showing, too. Here's some proof.

  • Capcom announces the Platinum Hits Triple Pack for Xbox 360

Capcom announces the Platinum Hits Triple Pack for Xbox 360

I love it when publishers bundle a couple or more classic titles from the lineup for a discounted price, don’t you? Capcom has just announced the Platinum Hits Triple Pack for a late summer launch that includes Dead Rising, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition – Colonies Edition and Devil May Cry 4. I haven’t spent too much time with Dead Rising but I’ve played the others and all three together are definitely worth it for $40. Look for the Platinum Hits Triple Pack from Capcom beginning September 8.

  • Natal to launch with new Xbox 360 console?

Natal to launch with new Xbox 360 console?

NatalStart up the rumor engine, ladies and gentlemen. 1UP.com is reporting that Microsoft's Project Natal may actually be shipping integrated into a new console next fall. From the sounds of it, though, the console won't be new as in different but new as in improved slightly. That is, new games would apparently work on both the current Xbox 360 console and "Xbox Natal" as it's being unofficially called.

  • Review: Kindle DX

    Review: Kindle DX

Another month, another version of the Kindle. I’ve been using a Kindle since it was shaped like a very thin doorstop and I’m delighted each time I see a new version. The latest version is the DX, a monstrous 9-inch version of the smaller Kindle 2 that supports direct PDF reading without conversion. Why am I [...]

  • Microsoft touts 30 million Xbox 360s sold, 20 million Xbox LIVE members

Microsoft touts 30 million Xbox 360s sold, 20 million Xbox LIVE members

Sony may have been the first to claim the 20 million users number, but most will no doubt agree that Microsoft has a considerably stronger claim to that title, as their just-announced 20 million users apparently includes only "active members," and doesn't include users that have simply signed up to use their online forums. Even less debatable are Microsoft's latest sales numbers for the console, which now officially top 30 million worldwide. As Microsoft points out, that translates to a whopping $14.5 billion in sales across all Xbox 360 categories, or an impressive $5.9 billion in game sales for third-party publishers. Other tidbits include the fact that Xbox 360 users own 8.3 titles each on average, and that Xbox LIVE has seen a 136% increase in new members since the launch of the New Xbox Experience last year.
