Samsung’s Galaxy Apollo smartphone is coming soon, looks like an M100S to us

In the off chance that the Galaxy S isn't your cup of tea, the second-hottest Android device Samsung has released so far is undoubtedly the M100S over in its domestic Korean market, a 3.7-inch hottie with a 5 megapixel cam, 802.11n WiFi, and Android 2.1. It's not just for South Korea, though, as evidenced by this shot that's popped up over on Samsung's British site showing a device known as the "Galaxy Apollo" that looks suspiciously identical to the M100S. Frankly, we're still dying to get a glimpse of this Bluetooth 3.0-equipped M120S at some point -- but in the meantime, we suppose this puppy will have to do. No word on a release date, but Sammy's site claims that it's "coming soon."

    [Thanks, James]

  • HTC ‘Vision’ finally bringing high-end QWERTY to Android?

HTC ‘Vision’ finally bringing high-end QWERTY to Android?

For a company with as rich of a reputation for landscape QWERTY sliders as HTC has, you'd think they'd be tripping over themselves to release a truly high-end Android phone with a keyboard, but not so much -- the closest they've come so far would be the midrange myTouch 3G Slide, and that puppy ain't even out yet. We broke the news last night about three seemingly new names for upcoming HTC devices -- Vision, LED, and Glacier -- and Dutch site Tweakers.net is now reporting on a user agent profile for the Vision that lists the device featuring that mythical holy trinity: WVGA display, QWERTY, and Android. Furthermore, they've got the director of HTC Benelux on record saying that they're planning more Android phones with keyboards -- so that's a Good Thing to hear at a time when huge slates seem to be stealing the show in every segment of the market. With the Nexus One, Desire, Droid Incredible, and EVO 4G all alive and well, we think these guys would be well-served to play with other form factors for a minute or two, yeah?

  • Clearwire promises Clear-branded HTC and Samsung WiMAX phones this year

Clearwire promises Clear-branded HTC and Samsung WiMAX phones this year

Without going into much detail, Clearwire mentioned on its first quarter earnings call today that WiMAX-capable phones bearing the Clear name from both Samsung and HTC are "expected" to be available before 2010's out, which is a pretty optimistic affirmation of comments the company made earlier this year. It describes the Sammy as "an Android-based 3G/4G/WiFi device optimized for heavy video and video communications use," while the HTC's language leaves out the platform -- it's just called "a 3G/4G/WiFi enabled phone," leading us to believe that this puppy could very well be running Windows Phone 7. If that's the case, we can understand why HTC wouldn't want Clearwire spilling the beans since they've yet to officially announce any plans for jumping into the WinPho 7 game. In fact, Clearwire went so far as to say on the call that the HTC device would not be the EVO 4G, so yeah, we can totally buy that there's some Microsoft action going on behind the scenes here.

As for Clearwire's health, it has seen a 94 percent year-over-year boost in total WiMAX subscribers for a total just shy of a million -- and interestingly, the overwhelming majority of those are retail, not wholesale, meaning that folks are running Clear-branded equipment. We expect that to change dramatically once Sprint's Overdrive gets a little more penetration and the EVO comes into play, but for now, some 814,000 customers are familiar with the Clear logo. They lost a hair over $94 million in the quarter, but hey, in the scheme of things, that's peanuts -- building out networks isn't a cheap endeavor, after all.

Palm bails on Modernista, the ad agency behind the creepy witch lady

Up until recently, Palm’s ads haven’t exactly been anything we’d consider “embraced.” They also haven’t been anything we’d consider, you know, “good.” Expect the ads to get more consistently good from here on out — or at least more consistently not featuring a creepy chick being creepy*. Itazura Bank: The cutest piggy bank you’ve ever seen (video)

Japan is the country of piggy banks. Most of them either cute, weird or both, and the newest model, the Itazura Bank [JP], clearly falls in the first category. This thing is just adorable. Here's how it works: You place a coin on the fish bone-shaped button on the top of the piggy bank, which alarms the small kitty that lives inside the savings box. It meows, opens the lid with its head, reaches out its paw, grabs the coin and moves back into the box with another meow.

Motorola Motus spied, snapped by the worst camera in history?

Given what we've heard and seen so far, we wouldn't say we're "excited" about the upcoming Motorola Motus -- it's just a midrange Android set, after all, and the Droid has taught us that Moto's capable of so much more -- but a spy shot's a spy shot, and we'll take what we can get, right? We can't confirm the authenticity of this positively awful photo spotted on motofan.ru, but it looks roughly like what we'd expect for a 2010-spec Android phone designed to appeal to the masses. The usability of that trick keyboard is an open question -- the Droid has already proven that the company isn't afraid to sacrifice a little usability for +5 points in the thin and sexy departments, so we'll just have to wait and see where this puppy lands.

  • Motorola’s MT710 OPhone for China makes us dream of Droids without keyboards

Motorola’s MT710 OPhone for China makes us dream of Droids without keyboards

While it's busy trying to rebuild market share on the backs of Android-powered devices in North America and Europe, Motorola's already got a bustling business in China, so it makes sense that they'd want to contribute some Google juice over there as well. That dovetails nicely with China Mobile's Android-based Open Mobile System -- which runs those so-called OPhones -- and Motorola has yet to bring an OPhone to market, so that's where this little beast appears poised to come into play. The MT710 is said to feature an 854 x 480 display clocking in at 3.7 inches and 3G support (using China Mobile's up-and-coming TD-SCDMA network), but beyond that, little is known; it's said that Motorola will intro a total of seven Android models in China over the next year, though, and this is clearly one of them. Shave three or four millimeters off the Droid's girth with this puppy, and count us in.

North American version of T-Mobile Pulse gets FCC approval, but for which carrier?

Android-powered handsets are still rare enough so that the world can't afford to segment them by continent -- when a big model comes out, it's pretty much got to go everywhere. Okay, correction: it doesn't have to go everywhere, but we certainly want it to -- and fortunately, it looks like some lucky carrier in the Americas is signed up for the Huawei U8220. You might know this puppy better as the Pulse over on T-Mobile in Europe, and a new variant of the device -- model number U8220-6 -- has just garnered FCC approval in the past few days with 3G on the 850 and 1900MHz bands. That means Bell, Telus, Rogers, Fido, and AT&T could all be on tap to get this one; we doubt that AT&T would make its inaugural Android plunge with a midrange Huawei, but stranger things have happened.

LG Chocolate Touch for Verizon coming November 5

We've been able to confirm with a trusted source that LG's Chocolate Touch for Verizon -- which will end up being about as far from the sexy BL40 as possible, unfortunately -- is slated for a November 5 launch. With the DROID and Droid Eris both launching in the same window, it's going to be tough for this puppy to get a word in edgewise, even though it's the latest model in a storied brand and really doesn't compete on any level with Verizon's Android devices. Then again, considering how far they've strayed from the BL40 with this one, we can't say we're feeling a ton of sympathy.

You can't make heads or tails of what carrier might be getting this version of the Bold 9700 just by looking at the wireframe diagram buried in the ID label documentation, but here's an important clue: it got tested for WCDMA Band IV, also known as AWS -- so yeah, that would be a pretty solid indicator that this puppy is T-Mobile USA's version. You could spend literally hours thumbing through the hundreds of pages of RF test results here, so curl up on a cushy futon and geek out -- just do us a favor and don't actually print it out, okay?

Review: Canon Color ImageClass MF8050Cn all-in-one printer

There is a code to which a cowboy cleaves. He never shoots first, he's always kind to ladies, and he never buys more printer than he can handle. While I can't speak for those out on the lone prairie, I can report that the 52-pound ImageClass MF8050Cn by Canon may be the heaviest printer I've had in my office to date. This isn't a printer for scrap-booking or creating beautiful photomontages of your grandmother. The color printing is delightfully sharp but the speed and on-board features - the lack of a picture preview screen, for example - makes this an office printer through and through. It also has a built-in copier and fax machine if you're into that stuff. It also scans from PCs or Macs. Because we're basically talking about a large job printer here you won't be printing many photos on this printer. However, it has excellent color reproduction and is just fine for color prints. A slight concern: the "media capacity" is 150 sheets on this puppy, which means you'll have to refill it every few if you're doing a few dozen pages per day.
