Sony Ericsson outs their first full-touch Walkman-branded feature phone: Yendo

You know, not all of us want a smart phone. There are people out there who only use a mobile to make calls, send texts, and listen to a few tunes. They're not the ones reading this blog, though. Maybe you know one of them and want to pass this information on? Anyway, Sony Ericsson today announced (alongside their next Android handset, the X8) their first ever full-touch, Walkman-branded, probably-not-very-expensive, feature-phone: the Yendo.

Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X8, plus Android 2.1 updates to Xperia X10 line

Two pieces of good news here for Sony Ericsson fans: the company today announced the next phone in their Xperia line, the X8. Slotting in below the X10, the X8 will be its smaller, cheaper sibling. Speaking of the X10, here's the other piece of good news: they (as in all three types of the X10), will get a bump from Android 1.6 to Android 2.1 in Q3 of this year. For the original X10, the bump will also bring HD video recording, which is a neat bonus.

    Sony Ericsson’s 3-inch Xperia X8 made official, coming in Q3 2010 for €259

While the real Shakira may be busy gallivanting over in South Africa, Sony Ericsson's handset that bore the same (code)name has today been unveiled as the latest member of the Xperia line. Bridging the gap between the fully formed X10 and its Mini siblings, the 3-inch Xperia X8 will run Android 1.6 somewhere deep underneath a comprehensively customized skin. That means you get Sony Ericsson's social (Timescape) and media (Mediascape) aggregators whether you like them or not, and by the looks of the early hands-on pictures, it seems like a straight port of the UI available on the X10 Mini. A 3.2 megapixel camera is available around back, with WiFi, a 600MHz CPU, 1,200mAh battery, and interchangeable covers completing the value proposition. The X8 will cost around €259 ($318) when it launches in the third quarter of this year. Hit the sources for more pictures.

Aava Virta Android reference platform will be the first shipping Moorestown smartphone

Sure, Intel might not be planning for Moorestown-based smartphones to hit the market for at least another six months, and the LG GW990 might have died a quiet death, but that's not stopping Aava from getting right in the game with its Virta Android, an Atom Z600-based reference smartphone designed for developer testing. Slated to ship in Q3, the Virta features a Moorestown processor, a 3.8-inch 864 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, quad-band EDGE radios with AT&T 3G support, WiFi, Bluetooth, a five megapixel video camera, and a microSD slot. We're assuming the shipping version will look a lot like the prototype Aava device we've been seeing for a while now, but Aava has some fancier renders up on its site, so we'll see what happens and how much this costs when this thing arrives.

  • Symbian^3 to launch on non-Nokia handset, courtesy of ‘Asian vendor’

Symbian^3 to launch on non-Nokia handset, courtesy of ‘Asian vendor’

Well, here's a bit of thunder theft for you. Nokia's N8 launch is still firmly wedged in Q3 2010, but according to Symbian Foundation Executive Director Lee Williams, other handset makers are not going to hang around and wait for it to be the vanguard Symbian^3 device. Instead, says Lee, the first phone with the overhauled software will be provided by an unnamed Asian vendor -- we're thinking LG or Samsung, with the latter being more likely as it has more history with Symbian. This seems to be mostly on account of the new OS being pretty much ready for market right now, so whoever's bringing the goods should be doing so in the very near future.

  • Android-powered entry-level HTC Wildfire says hello to the EU a day early (with video)

Android-powered entry-level HTC Wildfire says hello to the EU a day early (with video)

HTC held a press conference in Germany today where they showed off their successor to the entry-level Tattoo, dubbed the Wildfire. As strange as it sounds, it appears that HTC weren't quite ready to announce it, but once the news was out, it spread like Wildfire across the web, so HTC went and confirmed it with a press release dated for tomorrow. So I guess we're a bit like time travellers now, no? The phone is destined for the European and Asian markets in Q3 of this year, and will be available in black, white, red, and (the often under-appreciated) brown.

HTC Wildfire escapes from Yellow Mountain riding Android 2.1 (update: official)

Whoops, a press conference in Germany seems to have inadvertently set HTC's unannounced Wildfire handset loose. The new candybar brings quadband GSM and 900/2100MHz UMTS/HSDPA radios to the Android 2.1 party powered by the ol' Qualcomm MSM7225 processor running at 525MHz. Spec-wise we're looking at HTC's Sense UI running atop a 3.2-inch QVGA touchscreen, a 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS/AGPS, Blueooth 2.1+EDR, 512MB Flash and 384MB of RAM, and microSD expansion. Hey HTC, anything you want to make official here?

Update: And it's official. Press release touting a Q3 release for Europe and Asia after the break.

    [Thanks, Frank]

  • Nokia N8 hands-on

    Nokia N8 hands-on

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/gadgets/Nokia_N8_Hands_on_PICS'; Good old London, full of little wonders and flagship devices for you to discover. We were at Nokia's local HQ this morning to talk to the company's Head of Design Marko Ahtisaari, and the good gent happened to bring with him a prototype N8 for us to play around with. It was stressed to us that it's a prototype, so small cosmetic changes might still occur, but we are for most part looking at the hardware that will be hitting retail shelves in Q3 of this year. Speaking of Q3, Marko was adamant that that will be when Nokia "turns on" the Symbian 3 housed within the N8, which -- disappointingly -- meant that we couldn't get to grips with the new UI experience in person. Ah well, there are plenty of pictures to be devoured in the gallery below, and we can provide you with a few observations of our own to tide you over till then.

The anodized aluminum shell feels very well built and is remarkably light. So much so that our first instinct was to ask whether the battery was inside or this was just a hollow mockup. We'd compare it to the feeling of picking up the Zune HD for the first time, it's a strikingly light device. Plopping it into our pocket also felt extremely natural, which might be attributable to the particular curvature of the N8's sides. Attention to detail in the physical design, as Marko said, was of paramount importance to Nokia. That doesn't come without sacrifices, however, with the user replaceable battery being substituted by an integrated cell, but to quote the man himself, the "overall design concept overruled" such considerations. We found the home button on the front a bit of a pain to press in, but it's still very early to form conclusions about the experience on this device. For now, just go gawk at it below and look out for the in-depth writeup of our chat with Marko Ahtisaari later today.

Cricket’s 2010 product lineup leaks, Kyocera Zio priced and dated

I hadn't realized it until just this second, but it's been way, way too long since we've seen a monstrous carrier leak. I suppose after the heavily-detailed data dumps from the likes of AT&T and T-Mobile in 2009, the carriers have been tightening their grip. Fortunately, that hasn't kept what looks to be the majority of Cricket's 2010 product line up from leaking out.

  • Palm CEO talks about disappointing sales

Palm CEO talks about disappointing sales

Poor Jon Rubinstein. After a strong, early push, Palm's sales have slowed and revenue has dried up with $300-$320 million in Q3. Their "guidance" to Wall Street AKA how much they expected to make? $1.6-1.8 billion. Bloops. The letter is over at WSJ but here's an excerpt.
This morning we announced preliminary results for our 2010 third quarter. Since the quarter has not yet closed, it is too soon to offer exact numbers, but we stated that we expect to report revenues for Q3 between $300 and $320 million. We also announced that we expect our revenue for this fiscal year to fall below the guidance we gave to Wall Street, which ranged from $1.6 to $1.8 billion. As we mentioned in our press release, our softer than expected performance is due to slower than expected customer adoption of our products, which in turn has prompted our U.S. carrier partners to put additional orders on hold for the time being. On a positive note, we expect to exit the quarter with over $500 million in cash on our balance sheet. We’re scheduled to announce our full financial results in March.

BlackBerry shipments break record in Q3, RIM profits jump 59 percent

RIM being a thriving and profitable company is hardly a new story -- as confirmed by third quarter earnings of $628 million off the back of a record-breaking 10 million units sold -- but the way it's making its money seems to be changing. More than 80 percent of new BlackBerry subscribers in the quarter were private customers, marking a distinct shift -- maybe not away from the corporate arena, but definitely toward embracing the consumer market. In an effort to further consolidate its global empire, RIM has also announced a partnership with China Telecom to go along with its earlier China Mobile deal. Oh, and there's the small matter of the 75 millionth BlackBerry being sold, but we're sure the cool cats up in BB HQ aren't counting handsets, they're probably too busy rolling around in piles of money.

  • The end of exclusivity leading to big iPhone sales in Europe

The end of exclusivity leading to big iPhone sales in Europe

Go figure, right? You get a relatively hot phone out onto more carriers, and just like that, sales increase. It ain't rocket science, buster. As AT&T grins happily while enjoying a death grip on Apple's cash cow here in the States, things are a lot more wide open for consumers across the pond. In both France and the UK, the iPhone has been given the all-clear to be sold on multiple carriers, and according to research from Bernstein, the "widening of the distribution has boosted Apple's value market share to 32 percent in the latest quarter from 21 percent just three months earlier." The notes also mention that Apple's increase is coming at the expense of RIM, with over 600,000 iPhone handsets being sold during Q3 2009 in France alone. The point to all this madness? Oh, not much -- just to tell Sir Jobs that he can count on quite a bit more dough should he decide to sell this elusive "iPhone" device on Verizon in the US of A.
