LG leaks in Brazil include Android-powered C710, cute T310
Posted on June 20, 2010 | No CommentsBrazil's CelularCafe looks to have scored a four-pack of fresh leaks out of LG, most notably a new Android handset being called the C710 that looks suspiciously like Verizon's Ally but apparently lacks a QWERTY keyboard, steps up to a 5 megapixel cam, and includes 802.11n WiFi, a new spec sheet line item that's been picking up steam with higher-end smartphones as of late. Next, there's the T300, a low-end full touchscreen device with a 2 megapixel cam that the site has taken to calling the Cookie Light; next to it lies the slightly-spiffier T310 (pictured) with a larger display and irresistibly cute styling. Finally, there's a forgettable A130 clamshell with EDGE data and an FM radio with recording capability -- needless to say, not the most exciting of the bunch. No word on when, or where, we might see any of these for sale.

Sony Ericsson rearing a ‘Julie’ Windows Phone 7 slider in the lab?

Our latest Windows Phone 7 gossip stems from the juicy Chinese grapevine. Rumor has it that Sony Ericsson's now testing a WP7 device -- possibly a first for the company -- codenamed "Julie," which sports a sliding QWERTY keyboard and a capacitive multitouch screen about the size of the X10's. Ah, this sure brings back touching memories of the first two WinMo Xperia sliders. Apart from the processor being clocked at 1GHz or above, little else is known about this unborn baby -- no dates, no photos ('tis our mockup on the right), but we won't question this tipster who also brought us SE's "Shakira" and the peculiar 5.5-inch Android device. Motorola announces EU-bound keyboardless Droid/Milestone: the XT720

Motorola today announced their latest Android offering, the Milestone XT270, which is basically a Milestone/Droid with an updated camera, HDMI out, and no QWERTY keyboard. The removal of the keyboard makes the device a perfectly pocketable 10.9mm thick (down from 13.7mm on the original Milestone).

Metro PCS to join Android game with a Motorola QWERTY slider
Posted on June 6, 2010 | No CommentsA four-row sliding QWERTY keyboard? Check. Metro PCS splash screen? Check. Motorola insignia? You better believe it. The folks at AndroidGuys have obtained what very strongly appears to be Metro PCS' first Android phone, and along with a handful of pics there's some alleged specs, too. From the man (or woman) behind the curtain: a 600MHz processor, 3 megapixel camera, and Android 2.1 with Motoblur dressing. An EVO 4G combatant it is definitely not -- nor ever intended to be -- but we wouldn't be surprised if the price turned more than a few heads. Any indication of price, release date, or even official name is, however, still a mystery.

Sony Ericsson prepping a 5-inch Android phone with QWERTY keyboard? (updated)

What we're looking at here is supposedly a Sony Ericsson smartphone, which seems to sport a five-inch screen and a hinged slide-out keyboard like the HTC Shift and the Eking S515. Even if this prototype turns out to be legit, our tipster -- who has a solid track record -- says it's only running on Android 2.1 and that development is in its infancy while low-level drivers are being tested. Well, we can probably wait, except we're also told that internally SE doesn't appear to have any plans for 2.2 yet. Cue the angry tomatoes and eggs, but bring us a PSP phone any day and we'll call off the rally.
Update: We've received word from a second highly-trusted source who says that the display is 5.5 inches (too big to fit in the front pocket), and runs a clean Android 2.1 install. Inventec’s Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop
Posted on June 3, 2010 | No CommentsIt may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a "Marvell 624," which we're guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it's currently running 1.6, word is that it'll be dipped in 2.1's creamy filling in the near future. When will delivery be? Inventec has been showing this guy off since last year, and while the person doing the demonstration indicates they'll be available "pretty soon" at a price point around $400, we found this guy for sale already at a price of 2688 yuan, or about $395. So, if you're eager to get computing and prefer donuts to eclairs, we wish you happy importing.

Motorola Droid 2 found in Verizon system, keyboard makes an online cameo? (update: specs)
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsWhile we've got no way to confirm at the moment, here's some proverbial food for thought. A friendly reader last night published in our comment thread for the two rumored Verizon-bound Motorola devices with the above picture (subtitles added by us), claiming the bottom image is the Droid 2's upgraded QWERTY keyboard. The story goes that his friend had one but no other information is currently available -- the font on the keys is identical, and the mic icon on the bottom left is distinctively Android. If it's legit, we gotta say we're hopeful; the keys look to have a more protruding center à la the CLIQ, which should make typing on the little guy much easier than before. And if it's not the Droid successor, well, it's still something we haven't seen. Could this be the updated QWERTY-fied Android solution we've been waiting for? Time will tell.
Update: Droid Life has what it claims to be a screencap from the Verizon inventory system showing the M1955, a.k.a. Droid 2, hanging out in Ontario, California. Easily fakeable? You betcha, but it's not like the Droid name is going to any other carrier. Interesting food for thought.
Update 2: The original source of the image just got back to us with some purported specs -- and yet again, let's remind you that we can't confirm any of this yet. What we've heard: it's out in the field for testing purposes, it has a 3.7-inch screen, is nearly identical to the original Droid in size and shape, and is chrome instead of black (though that might just be the prototype). And in case you weren't convinced yet, this is definitely not the same as the Shadow.

Nokia N8 video overview: Symbian^3 homescreens, messaging, email, and Flash-capable browser on show
Posted on May 28, 2010 | No CommentsIt seems like the only question really left about the Nokia N8, albeit the most important one, is just how it'll interface with the user and what the experience of living with it will be like. The Nokia Conversations team is now aiming to answer just that with the first of three video walkthroughs taking us on a tour of the new device and its Symbian^3 operating environment. We now know you can have up to three homescreens with six widgets apiece, and -- gasp -- wallpapers are available right off the bat. Threaded messaging is also implemented in the new OS, as well as a soft QWERTY keyboard and a set of emoticons... yes, emoticons. Notably, the entire demo is done with the phone held in landscape, suggesting that might be the preferred method of use, while transitions between menus look as quick and pleasurable as you might expect from a promo video. LG Vu Plus coming to AT&T on June 6 for $150
Posted on May 24, 2010 | No CommentsSo that Vu Plus we'd tipped for a June 6 release has just gone official, and needless to say, it's not your daddy's Vu. The most notable change is the addition of a landscape slider QWERTY keyboard, but one of the Vu's hallmark's -- support for AT&T's FLO-based Mobile TV service -- carries over for $9.99 a month with a free 7-day trial subscription. It's got a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, a 3 megapixel autofocus cam with video recording, AT&T Video Share compatibility, and microSD expansion if the phone's internal 50MB just aren't cutting it. Is this the Samsung Acclaim for US Cellular? (update: we’re pretty sure it is)
Posted on May 13, 2010 | No CommentsSo regional carrier US Cellular dropped the bomb this week that it had scored an exclusive on a fresh Android handset from Samsung coined the R880 Acclaim, but unfortunately, it failed to actually show us the thing. We've just gotten a tip alleging that the handset you're looking at here is the Acclaim, and we'd say there's a good chance it's real -- we know it's got a QWERTY keyboard, for instance, paired to a 3.2-inch HVGA display. Unfortunately, prospective buyers are waiting until July for a release, but tell us: does this shot give you hope that the phone's going to rock, or does it break your spirit into a million jaded pieces?
