Live from Verizon’s “Next Generation of DROID” Droid X Announcement

Whether we're talking about the EVO-challenging Droid X or the QWERTY-sliding Droid 2, Verizon's had one hell of a time keeping the latest additions to their Droid lineup under wraps lately. Of course, just because some of the juicier details have already spilled out doesn't mean Verizon won't make a big fuss when they're ready for it to be officially official. They'll be be pulling back the curtains on what they're calling the "Next Generation of DROID" in just a few minutes -- and, as usual, we'll be there to cover it live.

Video: Hands-on with the Motorola Droid 2

You love Motorola, don't you? You've been rockin' each of their models before even the RAZR was cool. So you've no doubt been excited by the upcoming sequel to the brought-moto-back-from-fiery-doom Droid: the Droid 2. Yes, the Droid 2, not X. I know it's getting a litle confusing remembering which Droid is which, but let me remind you: the Droid 2 has a physical QWERTY, the X doesn't. But anyway, Android and Me have posted the world's first* hands-on video with the device, as well as run the device through a few benchmarks. And what did they find? Follow the read link to find out.

  • Samsung Galaxy S Pro specs leak out?

Samsung Galaxy S Pro specs leak out?

Can't confirm these ourselves, but if Android Central's sources are to be believed, these Samsung Galaxy S Pro specs are mighty impressive. Here's what we're looking at: a Sammy-borne 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, a Super AMOLED screen that may or may not be the same 4-inch, 800 x 480 window on the Galaxy S, a strong QWERTY slider with raised keys, front-facing VGA camera, 5 megapixel back camera with 720p video recording capabilities, WiMAX support, and Android 2.1 with some TouchWiz 3.0 customizations. As for qualms, the source does drop "plastic-y" a couple times in a none-too-flattering light. Still, for those who find a lack of physical keys a dealbreaker for the EVO 4G, this might end up being a proper alternate. We'll have to wait and see -- not too long, right Sammy?

    [Thanks, Ulf S.]

  • Motorola and RIM settle patent dispute with a good old cross-licensing deal

Motorola and RIM settle patent dispute with a good old cross-licensing deal

We always like to hear of companies burying the hatchet (and the lawyers with it, if at all possible), and our latest source of good vibes are two North American phone makers that have been at each other's throats over patents since early 2008. Motorola and RIM had a previous intellectual property-sharing deal that expired at the end of '07 and with the companies unable to come to a suitable extension agreement, it all spiraled out into a big and silly legal discord. That has at long last been settled now, with RIM paying a one-off fee and regular royalties, as well as licensing some of its own patent catalog out to Moto, in exchange for using the Americans' knowhow in WiFi and other areas. All in all, an inevitable conclusion to an unnecessarily legalized negotiation. Now how about both you guys get back to building us those QWERTY sliders and 2GHz Androids?

Premature leak of the day: Sony Ericsson 5-inch Android QWERTY phone

Hoowee! Look at this thing! What you're looking at here is a very early prototype of an upcoming Sony Ericsson 5-inch, full-QWERTY Android phone, and I gotta say, I kinda like it. However, 5 inches does make it a bit of a beast, moving the device squarely into too-big-to-be-a-phone-too-small-to-be-a-tablet territory... but look at that keyboard! It looks totally typeable!

Unknown HTC Android phone appears, shrouded in mystery

For those that have only recently tuned in, the Android Guys have just unearthed photos of an upcoming Android handset from HTC, which they speculate to be the forthcoming HTC Aria. As you'll recall, in last week's episode, we thought that the HTC Aria was the QWERTY phone spotted at the FCC some months ago. However, the phone here appears to be of the slate variety... so... where does this leave us? Confused for a start, but no more than usual after a long weekend.

As promised, LG’s mid-range, QWERTY, Android-powered slider (phew), the Ally, is now available from Verizon. Just think: somewhere out there, keen LG/Iron Man 2/Android fans are braving the harsh Spring conditions, waiting for their favourite Verizon stores to open. The less adventurous of the devout would have just pre-ordered it, but where’s the honour in [...]

We've already gotten word of the T-mobile myTouch 3G Slide specs. We also know that it will be released on the 2nd of June for $179.99. We've even had our own hands-on. But there is one little maneuver left in the dance of phone revelations: the unboxing. And here it is.

More BlackBerry Bold 9800 pics surface: AT&T and virtual keyboard in, SurePress out?

You might've been intrigued by the previous show of the BlackBerry Bold 9800 slider, but this new series of images blows those all out of water. The Berry Fix has a plethora of pics for your perusal, chief among them a showing of the virtual keyboard to complement the physical QWERTY. We gotta say, every announce of good design sense lost on the 9670 must have been spent on this guy; we're really intrigued by this one. If that wasn't enough, we've got two more details that'll tickle your fancy: an AT&T splash screen for one, and claims from the article's author (via Twitter) that RIM's not using SurePress here. That'd actually be quite a relief, but until we get our hands on the sucker, let's just curb our enthusiasm, mkay?

  • T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide coming June 2 for $180

    T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide coming June 2 for $180

So T-Mobile's myTouch 3G Slide -- the QWERTY-enabled version of the venerable myTouch 3G -- has been priced and dated, and we're happy to see that "expected to be available in June" has turned out to mean the very beginning of the month; June 2, to be exact, in your choice of red, white, or black. What makes us less happy, though, is the notion of paying $179.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate for an Android device that now has the unenviable job of lying in the massive shadow created by the brilliant EVO 4G. Granted, the two phones are for very different carriers, but that doesn't really excuse T-Mobile from offering up a phone with a lower-class processor, 40 percent of the screen resolution, and three megapixels lopped off the camera for just $30 less upfront, does it? Time for some serious price correction across the smartphone landscape, wethinks.

  • LG’s Windows Phone 7 phone caught in the wild, looking good

LG’s Windows Phone 7 phone caught in the wild, looking good

Been wondering how that LG proto unit debuted on The Engadget Show is doing? Pocket-lint got to see the QWERTY slider up close and personal in London yesterday, and their takeaway from the meetup was that the device and OS are well on their way to stardom. Calling it the LG Panther, they delve into its deep Facebook integration, which throws up status updates when you hit on a contact in your address book, ability to recognize addresses and provide relevant links to Bing maps, as well as its quick and clear Zune media player. The latter was accompanied by confirmation that the Zune Store will be hitting the UK in time for Windows Phone 7's release, which could happen as early as September -- it all depends on who you talk to. Hit the source for more imagery and impressions.
