Blizzard reveals the hardware behind World of Warcraft
Posted on September 18, 2009 | No Comments
Blizzard released some interesting information about the inner workings of World of Warcraft recently at GDC Austin. During their keynote speech, they talked about the history of the Warcraft games, and what exactly made their game so successful where others have failed. It's an interesting read overall, however what we found amazing is the actual hardware required to run the game.

Psystar emerges from bankruptcy ready to sell a Core i7 Mac Pro clone
Posted on July 2, 2009 | No Comments
And you thought that Apple finally drove the front running clone maker off of a cliff. Nope. Psystar successfully navigated the bankruptcy courts and is back at its old game of annoying Apple. The ongoing lawsuit is still in play, but bankruptcy no doubt allowed the company to shed some debt and reorganize under Chapter 11 guidelines. Now the company is back and just released a new Core i7 clone.

Gallery of The Meanest and Lamest Supercomputers
Posted on June 12, 2009 | No CommentsGoing on Royal Pingdom’s latest gallery, there are two schools of supercomputer design. First, we have the kick-ass, retro-future Death Star category, which includes the The Connection Machine 5 (above), a machine so cool-looking that it actually had a minor role in the movie Jurassic Park. It wasn’t just flashing lights, though. The CM-5 had [...] -
AMD’s ATI Radeon E4690 brings HD, DirectX 10.1 support to embedded GPU arena
Posted on June 1, 2009 | No CommentsAMD's newfangled ATI Radeon E4690 may not be the next Crysis killer, but it should do just fine in next-gen arcade and slot machines. All kidding aside (sort of...), this new embedded graphics set is said to triple the performance of AMD's prior offerings in the field, bringing with it 512MB of GDDR3 RAM, DirectX 10.1 / OpenGL 3.0 support and hardware acceleration of H.264 and VC-1 high-definition video. The 35mm chip also differentiates itself by integrating directly onto motherboards and taking on many of the tasks that are currently assigned to the CPU, but alas, it doesn't sound as if we'll be seeing this in any nettops / netbooks anytimesoonever.Filed under: Peripherals

MSI’s X-Slim X340 now shipping in US for $899.99
Posted on May 27, 2009 | No CommentsIt's hard to say if our harmless threats influenced the MSRP here, but either way, we'll take it. MSI has finally (finally!) come clean with a set price on its succulent X-Slim X340, and while we heard through the grapevine awhile back that it would ship here for under a grand, we definitely had our doubts. Starting today, eager consumers can order one for the low, low price of $899.99, which buys you an Intel ULV SU3500 processor, Vista Home Premium, a 13.4-inch 1,366 x 768 resolution display, GMA 4500MHD graphics and 2GB of DDR2 RAM. There's also a 320GB hard drive, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, 4-cell battery (an 8-cell is optional), 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, twin USB 2.0 sockets, VGA / HDMI outputs and an SD / MMC card reader. The 0.78-inches thick machine is shipping today in the US of A from a bevy of e-tailers, and you can peek the full release just after the break.
Update: Looks like some e-tailers even have it at $799. Nice!Continue reading MSI's X-Slim X340 now shipping in US for $899.99

Just in time for graduation shopping, the $999 white 13-inch MacBook is now a bit more powerful. This is the second time that Apple has updated the least expensive Mac notebook. This round of updates isn't as impressive, but we'll take anything we can get.

Acer Aspire Timeline out of the box and loving life
Posted on May 26, 2009 | No CommentsWhile it's always a fun rush to see an unopened box in a Canadian store room, we're much more excited about what's inside the box, and friendly tipster James somehow managed to buy himself an Acer Aspire Timeline 5810TZ-4657 in Iowa about a week ago. For a scant $598 he got a 15-inch display, DVD drive, Intel U2700 1.3GHz processor and 3GB of RAM -- which makes most similarly specced "thin and lights" seem a little silly in comparison. He says he's gotten around 7 hours of battery on max power saving mode, and about 4-5 hours on max use, finds the 720p webcam comparable to a Flip camera, enjoys the keyboard and multitouch trackpad, and overall finds the system to be very quick and responsive running Vista. Acer still hasn't confirmed an official lineup, price or availability for these things, but we've gotta think it's gonna be soon -- if this is right, it's almost too good not to share.Filed under: Laptops
