Junaio Augmented Reality browser comes to Android.

Augmented Reality is a technology I follow regularly as I think it is a potential mobile industry game changer. Lately, a company called Metaio has come to my attention. They are making great strides bringing AR out of its technological infancy with a series of software developments. The first development to note is that starting today [...]

  • LG flexible display patent application includes fever-dreams of future devices

LG flexible display patent application includes fever-dreams of future devices

We're still a ways out from real-world applications of flexible displays, but LG is preparing for the future: it's just filed a patent application that details changing a flexible display's touch sensitivty depending on the state of the display, and it's included some intriguing drawings of potential devices with the application. Specifically, the patent application includes claims referencing cylindrical, prism, folding, "rolling," "freestyle," and "hybrid" body shapes, which all sound pretty intense -- especially the hybrid body, which is a "combination of the folding body and rolling body." Of course, patent applications don't always turn into granted patents, let alone shipping products, but if you're in the mood to stare wistfully at line art and dream about the future, the full PDF is at the source link.

Screen Grabs: Gossip Girl’s Nate Archibald drops a blast from Kin Two

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today's movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Given Microsoft's Generation Upload marketing and Verizon's exclusive Gossip Girl placement deal, it's not surprising a Kin phone made an appearance on the show's season finale, but we're having a hard time believing that even Nate Archibald is chump enough to trade in his heat-seeking Droid for a Kin Two. Not that we'd know, since we don't watch the show. At all. Ever. Video after the break.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Bing turn-by-turn navigation for Windows Mobile gets taken for a test drive

Bing turn-by-turn navigation for Windows Mobile gets taken for a test drive

Microsoft certainly added all the right features to its Bing navigation app for Windows Mobile, but does it actually deliver the goods in real world use? It does according to the folks at PocketNow, who have put the app through its paces and kindly provided a quick demo video of it running on an HTC HD2. While there's nothing too shocking or surprising, it looks like the voice input works well, and the turn-by-turn directions seem to be at least up to par with your average navigation device -- it even has a few nice touches like being able to tap on the screen to repeat the instructions. Head on past the break to check it out the video and, if you're still unsure, you can always take the app for a spin yourself -- it is free, after all.

    [Thanks, Keenan I]

Android 2.2 sets Android 2.1 on fire. From the friction. Because it’s so fast.

Man oh man. While it may just be benchmark scores at this point, this kind of speed increase is nothing to snuff at. Ian Douglas has run some benchmarks on his Froyo-powered Nexus One, and it's scoring almost 5 times better. To be a bit more specific, an Eclair-powered Nexus One usually scores around 6-7 MFLOPS in Linpack benchmarks, but this shiny new Froyo build delivers a blistering 38-40 MFLOPS.

This is one of those products that I look at and cringe. I do realize though, that some people just can’t live without this type of thing. If that describes you, you can get an emoticon stamp to “share your emotion to your lover in real world with a secret”. Apparently this is a “Kaoiro” [...]

Can you guess the inspiration for the Bionic Handling Assistant?

What you see here is the Bionic Handling Assistant, a sort of robotic arm designed to improve the interaction between humans and robots. Clearly this thing was inspired by Doc Ock from Spider-Man, right? There can be no doubt! Look at those articulated arms. Look at those pincers. Look at the sheer menace these things give off! Doc Ock all the way, am I right?

Fujifilm now lets you view 3D pics taken with its REAL 3D W1 on 3D TVs

Do you remember the FinePix REAL 3D W1, the "world's first" digital camera that lets users shoot photos (and movies) in 3D? Announced by Fujifilm back in September 2008, the device, which you can see pictured below, became official one year later (Fujifilm in the US, for example, sells it online for $600). For those lucky owners of said camera who also plan on getting a 3D TV soon, Fujifilm in Japan has announced [JP] the HDP-L1, a so-called "HD memory card player" (pictured on top of this post). Once plugged into your brand new 3D TV via HDMI, the small device lets you view 3D pictures and movies you made on the W1 on the TV screen (all you need to do is to put an SD or SDHC card with the 3D material into the player).

No more Linux for the PS3

I almost bought a Sony PS3 specifically so that I could use Linux on it. Now, I'm glad I didn't, because Sony has announced that in an upcoming firmware release they're going to remove support for alternate operating systems. The official explanation for the removal of this feature is "due to security concerns", but no specific security concerns have actually been mentioned yet.

  • TNA Wrestling can trend on Twitter just fine, but can it draw actual TV ratings? (No.)

TNA Wrestling can trend on Twitter just fine, but can it draw actual TV ratings? (No.)

We're all well aware that Twitter represents man's best chance of Redemption. No one's disputing that. What is in dispute today is just how representative Twitter is of The Real World. Case in point: TNA Wrestling made its long awaited move to Monday nights this week, and all throughout the night "TNA" was a trending topic on Twitter. We've been led to believe that anything that trends on Twitter is hugely important, not merely in the cozy confines of the Twitterverse, but all over Planet Earth. Explain this, then: the show only drew a 0.98 rating (it rounds up to a 1.0). I thought Twitter = ratings?
