Is the Android Market down for you? (update: it’s back)
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsAs I began the process of tearing into our brand new Droid X review unit, I ran through the nearly endless mental laundry list of all my favorite Android apps. “I’m totally going to install all of these“, I thought. Only one problem: The Android Market wasn’t showing any apps. None. No Yammers, no Yelps, [...] -
EVO 4G loses 30fps limit thanks to devoted community (video)
Posted on June 23, 2010 | No CommentsWhatever the reason HTC instituted that 30fps cap on the EVO's graphical output, the issue has just been remedied by -- surprise, surprise -- coders over at xda-developers. We've come across video evidence of the EVO 4G rolling along at a swift 54fps average clip, and another motion picture reel shows the positive effect this has had on the touch-tracking of the handset. Check them both out after the break and hit the source to get educated on how to make this happen on your own EVO. You should be warned that there are still some issues to resolve before the whole thing's buttery smooth, but hey, it's still a lot better than waiting for HTC to do it.

Video: Samsung Galaxy S torn to pieces in front of your very eyes
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No Comments
Looks like the new (and super-hot) Samsung Galaxy S has had its moment of vivisection, and we have the videos to prove it.
For those of you that enjoy these things (either sadists or DIYers), you'll be pleased to know that this one goes both ways: disassembly, then reassembly.

BlackBerry Curve 9300 fixing to replace the 8500 series?
Posted on June 2, 2010 | No CommentsIt death of the BlackBerry Curve 8900 on T-Mobile (you can still get it on AT&T, by the way) bummed us out for the simple reason that it was perhaps the best-looking BlackBerry every made. The Curve 8500 series that followed it just didn't have the same sort of sleek, high-end air about it, so we're happy to see that the 8500's follow-on should go a little ways toward closing the gap. What we're apparently looking at here is the Curve 9300, a phone that carries over the now-standard optical pad from the 8500 but uses a decidedly 8900-esque chrome surround while adding 3G and support for 802.11n, a feature it shares with the Pearl 3G. What keeps the 9300 on the low end of the spectrum, though, is its screen -- it's apparently just QVGA, and we're a little discouraged that the leaked unit here isn't running BlackBerry 6 -- but you get what you pay for, right?BlackBerry Curve 9300 fixing to replace the 8500 series? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 18:24:00 EST. Early this morning T-Mobile USA announced the departure of CEO Robert Dotson after 15 years with the company. CrunchDeals: Evernote Premium for free when you buy a ScanSnap scanner
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No Comments
From now until July 31, if you buy a SnapScan S1500 or S1500M scanner and sign up for Evernote Premium, Fujitsu will send you a check for $50, basically reimbursing you for the cost of Evernote Premium. If you've been looking for a reason to upgrade to Evernote Premium, or if you're in the market for a new scanner anyway, this is a pretty good deal.

First Update to Droid Incredible Arrives via Over-The-Air Voodoo [Updated]
Posted on May 2, 2010 | No Comments
It's great these days that devices of all types can receive updates after they've been purchased.
The ability to offer fixes and updates to devices has changed the product lifecycle (no longer do manufacturers have to bug-test as thoroughly or fully complete the software before selling hardware and recouping development costs), and many products have received new and unexpected features through upgrades (even if others have been impaired by an "update").
Today is such a day. The still factory-fresh Droid Incredible has had its first update. Like a baby's first steps, there will be more in the future, but unlike a baby's first steps, this update isn't very memorable.

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet gets access to Android Market’s paid apps
Posted on April 27, 2010 | No Comments
The Archos 5 Internet Tablet just got a bit cooler. It finally has access to paid apps from the Android Market thanks to the latest firmware. This solves one of the biggest gripes we've heard about the small Android tablets. Previsously users could only download the free Android apps, not the preimum apps that cost something. This is actually a significant move in the Android tablet market, a trend we hope is followed by others.

Lok-it secure USB drive protects your data
Posted on April 26, 2010 | No Comments
I love this device. It's always bothered me that if you lose a USB key, you lose the data as well. The Lok-IT secure USB device makes it so I don't have to worry about losing it. Well, other then the purchase price. The technology is pretty cool in that the computer can't see the drive until the PIN is entered, so it's not easy to hack.

“Universal Packaging System” concept misses the point
Posted on April 20, 2010 | No Comments
In theory Patrick Sung's new design concept sounds good. A sheet of cardboard, perforated in such a way to make it easy to wrap around an item, all the time protecting it from damage during shipment. But that's where the good idea fails. Plus, I doubt the United Parcel Service will let him use their logo.
