Meet baby humanoids M3-synchy and M3-neony
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No Comments
The JST, Japan's Science and Technology Agency, announced [JP] the development of M3-neony (pictured above) and M3-synchy today, two advanced baby-like robots. While "neony" (derived from "neonate") is intentionally designed to look like a newborn, "snychy" just stands for "synchronous communication" (but as you can see, he looks like a baby, too). The M3 stands for "Man-Made Man".
M3-neony is developed to mimic the behavior of a human baby. The JST says the robot is able to move certain "muscles" randomly, just like a newborn who is learning how to move does. It's supposed to serve as a research object for scientists who want to explore this process.

Meet An9-PR, the cutest multi-purpose robot out there
Posted on July 30, 2009 | No Comments
Japan-based security company ALSOK has developed an adorable robot [JP] that fulfills not one but a number of different functions. The so-called An9-PR can be used as a guide to help people in shopping centers or office buildings, an autonomously moving digital signage system or for surveillance. It's the big brother of the An9-RR, which was introduced back in March.
It features a simple electric bulletin board that's wrapped around its head and a total of three LCD screens built into its body (one 19-incher is on the front and there are two 12-inchers on the back). People can view ads, information on buildings and other information on these (touch) screens.

Video gallery: Japan gets five new gourmet robots
Posted on June 17, 2009 | No Comments
We already covered the sushi and pancake making robots showcased at a machinery and technology in Tokyo last week. But there were more robots poised to make our future lives better, namely a kebab robot, a drink-serving robot (my favorite) and a tissue distribution robot that makes sure you can wipe your mouth after eating and drinking.
