Do the new MacBook Pros forgo raw computing power in favor of battery life? Yup.
Posted on April 13, 2010 | No Comments
Today's MacBook Pro refresh left a lot of us feeling, well, bored. The new notebooks aren't particularly powerful with dual-core Core i5 and Core i7 CPUs along with low-memory GPUs. They really aren't anything special compared to similarly-priced PCs. Numerous manufacturers offer a PC for around $2000 that comes with quad-core i7's, 1GB graphics card along with tons of RAM and a higher-res screen than what's in the new MBPs. It really seems that Apple didn't go with the most powerful hardware available to boost the projected battery life to previously unheard of levels.
Battery life is really the only compelling feature -- besides OS X of course -- in the refreshed MacBook Pros. Apple is claiming that the 15- and 17-inch can see between 8-9 hours while the smaller, Core 2 Duo-equipped 13-inch can rock for 10 hours straight. That's impressive even if Apple exaggerated those claims a bit.

Drummer Hero for the Wii is powered by Arduino
Posted on February 26, 2010 | No CommentsSo many cool things you can do with Arduino. The possibilities are endless now that we have the technology! Jazari has constructed this very elaborate solenoid/Arduino rig to play a myriad of instruments, all with two Wiimotes. Sure beats playing percussion in band back in high school. [BoingBoing] -

iBUYPOWER announces liquid cooling for the hot Level 10 tower
Posted on February 11, 2010 | No Comments
I had a chance to see the Thermaltake Level 10 case at CES, and it looks as good in person as it does in the pictures. Of course, the design is intended to provide excellent air cooling, but it looks like iBUYPOWER is taking it one step farther and providing a liquid cooling for it as well.

Guy brings whole computer rig into B&N, the world snickers
Posted on December 20, 2009 | No Comments
This dude probably had to get some work done and decided to mooch off of B&N's free Internet. But seriously? Did he really have to do it in this fashion? I mean, he's just further advancing the general public's view of nerds.

Gunman for iPhone finally makes augmented reality awesome
Posted on December 16, 2009 | No CommentsFirst-person shooters are great stress releases for a world fraught with nagging bosses, horrible traffic, and dry cleaners that screw up your pants, but there's a problem -- the people you're shooting are just collections of polygons on an electronic display. The solution, of course, is to combine the world's love of the FPS genre with real friends and loved ones, and that's exactly where Gunman for iPhone comes into play. Using the phone as your gun and the camera as your scope, you can seek out up to three other opponents in local multiplayer matches or take the hunt global using Foursquare -- when you score a kill, you can post a shot of your unsuspecting victim straight to Twitter. If nothing else, this seems like it'd be a fantastic workout and a cheaper substitute for a full laser tag rig, making it perhaps the best use of augmented reality to date. Score it now in the App Store for $2.99 -- follow the break for the full press release.Continue reading Gunman for iPhone finally makes augmented reality awesome

djay 3 gets a dedicated controller
Posted on November 15, 2009 | No Comments
Analog vs. Digital. A battle that has lasted for all time (all the time that matters anyway), and doesn't show any signs of slowing down. Although a sort of armistice seems to have been called of late, with the rising trend of analog controllers for digital software. algoriddim and Vestax have combined forces to bring you just that, a hardware turntable for their iTunes DJ software, djay 3.

Numark announces NSFX for NS7 to use with ITCH by DJs. They also run out of capital letters.
Posted on October 3, 2009 | No CommentsDJs have been using double turntable setups ever since 1947 with Sir Jimmy Savile. Modern setups, however, forgo the vinyl and even CDs. One such computer-performance system is the Numark NS7 Controller for Serato’s ITCH software. The NS7 gives DJs the feel of a traditional turntable rig, while functioning as a controller for ITCH. A single [...] -

Make your own Street View rig for fun and profit
Posted on September 30, 2009 | No CommentsIf you suddenly find yourself with $300 to burn, an old laptop, and too much time on your hands this weekend, I might suggest that you build a DIY Google Street View-style rig for your car. That's what West Point student Roy Ragsdale did for his "disruptive technologies" class. And if someone at West Point does it, it's okay for you to do it.

R2D2 features 8 consoles, projector
Posted on September 23, 2009 | No Comments
And here we see one of the most useful implementations of an astromech droid to date. Modder Brian De Vitis gutted a novelty R2D2 beverage cooler and somehow managed to stuff eight old-school consoles inside. And – AND! – there’s a built-in projector. Very nice.

Windows 7 upgrade time tops out at 20+ hours
Posted on September 12, 2009 | No Comments
If you’re thinking of upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 later this fall, set aside some time – especially if you’ve got a lower-end machine with a bunch of applications already installed and a hard drive full of files. One of Microsoft’s own engineers clocked in a 1220-minute upgrade time on just such a machine.
Don't be fooled by the size of this

With the iPhone 3GS, the possibilities are endless. In July 2009, Harold Smith and Graham Mcbain took the iPhone 3GS, and made the first prototype of the OWLE Bubo, which we covered on CrunchGear. Now, just four months later, the OWLE Bubo is ready to ship to the public. OWLE, which stands for Optical Widgets for Life Enhancement, is aiming to making mobile video much easier, by taking the parts you use on your camcorder, and enabling you to use them on the iPhone.
The Bubo comes standard with a hotshoe mount on top for LED lights, four tripod mounts and standard 37mm lens threading so that you can put your own lenses on it, in addition to the lens that the Bubo comes with.
