iOS 4 Is Going To Up The Ante For Location-Based Startups
Posted on June 14, 2010 | No Comments
Yesterday, Robert Scoble wrote a post about "Foursquare's Yelp problem." It's an interesting read, with some good thoughts about how Foursquare can withstand feature-copying from a much larger rival. He asked for my thoughts, so I figured I'd jot some down here. Most importantly, his post got me thinking about the next phase of location, which I think we're just about to enter.
First, Scoble's thought that Foursquare might be in trouble because Yelp copied its check-in badge idea seems a bit premature to me. It was a much bigger deal when they added the whole check-in concept back in January, but the fact that Foursquare has started growing faster than ever since that point shows they have an advantage over Yelp in the realm. That advantage is that they have a social graph built for location, Yelp does not (yet).

WePad is now called WeTab – under pressure from Apple?
Posted on May 7, 2010 | No Comments
Neofonie, the German company behind the much-hyped iPad rival WePad, has changed the name of its tablet computer to WeTab, in a surprise move. The company has announced the name change on its Facebook page, stopping short of explaining why.
We have a sneaking suspicion a certain computer and smartphone maker based in Cupertino has something to do with it, though.

Microsoft-made Tag app lands on Android
Posted on March 4, 2010 | No Comments
In December 2008, Microsoft surprised a lot of people by releasing an iPhone app — Seadragon Mobile. A month later, they ensured the move wasn't taken as a joke or gimmick by launching another app, Tag, into Apple's App Store. Now, they have a few, including an app for Bing. And starting today, they're doing the same for Android.
Tag for Android is the first Microsoft-made app launched on the mobile platform. This is notable, of course, because Android is the mobile platform by Microsoft's chief rival: Google. Still, as we saw with the iPhone, Microsoft has no problems getting its technology out there, even if it means using rival platforms. Aside from Android and iPhone, Tag also currently works on Windows Mobile, J2ME, Blackberry and Symbian S60 phones.

iPhone slated for South Korean debut on November 28
Posted on November 23, 2009 | No Comments
Look, South Korea, we know it's been about four decades since a handset without an integrated DMB tuner or two launched in your neck of the woods -- and no, there isn't an app for that -- but just how badly do you want in on this Apple mojo? Following government clearance a couple months back, South Korean operator KT says that it's now ready to offer the iPhone to customers next Saturday, November 28 for prices ranging from 396,000 won ($343) on a 45,000 won plan ($39) for a 32GB 3GS all the way down to absolutely free for an 8GB 3G on a 95,000 won plan ($82). Given that KT and its competitors typically rival Japanese carriers for sheer technological insanity, it'll be interesting to see how the average Korean consumer responds to the late launch.iPhone slated for South Korean debut on November 28 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 05:21:00 EST. GSM Palm Pre to launch on Telcel in Mexico, feature storage expansion?
Posted on October 8, 2009 | No CommentsFiled under: Handsets, Palm, GSM
Well, this is interesting: we'd been under the impression that Telefonica had pretty much wrapped up a global exclusive on the GSM Palm Pre under the O2 and Movistar brands, but here we are, looking at two videos which claim that the Pre will launch in Mexico under rival América Móvil's Telcel label. That's certainly interesting -- and even more intriguingly, we're told that the gentlemen in this video are discussing storage expansion slots on the Pre, which is basically like having a conversation about Santa winning the Super Bowl in terms of Things That Are Real. Did Telcel just manage to pull the rug out from under Movistar and land what could be the best Pre of them all? We're on pins and needles, here. Videos after the break -- and if anyone wants to leave a better translation for us in comments, we're all ears.Continue reading GSM Palm Pre to launch on Telcel in Mexico, feature storage expansion?

DIY: How to set up your own analog tv station
Posted on September 2, 2009 | No Comments
Despite the fact that analog television is dead (at least according to the FCC), some stalwarts are using their proficiency in dead tech to create their own channels, to rival the pirate radio of the 80's. Seems that it's actually pretty easy to pick up your own analog TV broadcast setup on ebay, strap an antenna to the nearest chimney, and then start spewing your own content over the airwaves. So easy in fact, there's an Instructable on how to do it.

Twitter is great for a lot of things, but I think my favorite use of it is public smack-talking. Just read what Lance Armstrong
