Not as cool as Gundam, but: Watch Gigantor protecting Kobe (video)

Remember Gigantor? Remember last October, when the Japanese city of Kobe erected a 18m high statue of the giant anime robot? Granted, the robo statue is nowhere near as big as its Gundam counterpart, but it's still pretty cool.

Creepy, creepier, Japan’s new Android (video)

If you still needed evidence Japan is the country churning out the most realistic androids out there, here's another hint for you. Meet Geminoid-F, the newest robot from one of Japan's most famous robot makers, Hiroshi Ishiguro. Ishiguro-san's invention is as realistic as it is creepy, but also very cool.

The SiliFulin is a robot tail for humans (video)

We've covered quite a few unusual robots from Japan in the past, but the SiliFulin, a robot tail designed specifically for humans, is definitely among the weirdest models. You can wear the robot around your waist, where it reacts to your movements.

CrunchGear visits the Tsukumo Robot Kingdom in Akihabara (photo report)

It's been over four months since I last paid a visit to a robot store in Akihabara/Tokyo, namely the Vstone flagship store. But I have to say the Tsukumo Robot Kingdom [JP] is much cooler, mainly because the shop is larger and offers more robots than its rival. The Robot Kingdom is located on the 4th floor of the Tsukumo PC Store II in central Akihabara.

Jet Hitter: New Baseball robot allows solo practice

Baseball robots are nothing new (there's even a dedicated Wikipedia article on them), but that didn't stop Japan's Meiji University and Yokohama-based metal recycling company MRC [JP] to come up with the so-called Jet Hitter [JP].

Meet Tsutenkaku, a robot that looks like a tower (video)

Japan has a lot of different robots so why not develop one that looks like a tower - even if it may make no sense whatsoever? That's what a total of seven Japanese companies thought and built the Tsutenkaku Robotto [JP] (Tsutenkaku roughly translates to "tower that extends to the sky"). And as the name suggests, the robot is pretty tall: 170cm.

Wheelie: Toshiba’s new robot is cute, autonomous and maybe even useful (video)

Toshiba is a huge company, but it's not necessarily known as a maker of robots. Their "Wheelie" for indoor use is an autonomous, 2-wheeled robot, which is still in prototype stage and somehow reminiscent of a Segway in its basic design.

Doctors learning how to operate using robots

You probably haven't heard about the Da Vinci surgical robot, but it's been out for a little while. I had the chance to see it last year (and even try it out a little bit) and it's an amazing piece of machinery. It's also extremely expensive and in high demand, so it's difficult for doctors to find time to train in it's use.

    Zibits: Awwwww, so cute!

Zibits (pronounced, it seems, like “ribbits”) are tiny IR controlled robots that do two things: they move forward and spin. With these building blocks of locomotion you can do fascinating things like move forward and spin, spin and move forward, or just move forward or just spin. The possibilities, obviously, are endless. These guys cost $10 [...]

    Swarming helicopters create 3D display

If we’re going to be killed by swarming robots, they might as well look good doing it. Scientists at the MIT SENSEable City lab created a 3D display using tiny remote controlled helicopters that float in patterns in the air and light up, thereby creating a volumetric display. Called the Flyfire, it seems that this is [...]

Fair warning to anyone trying to do evil in Odessa, Ukraine - they have a giant robot guarding the port. While he doesn't seem to move much, I don't think he has to. This silent sentry warns anyone coming in to Odessa to be good, or he will smite you with his mighty steel rod.

Scientists create coevolved Predator and Prey bots

Some scientists at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale of Lausanne have built "evolving" predator and prey robots designed to, in short, learn from each other. Read that again: While we're worried about Taylor Swift and and Lady Gaga, robots are now teaching each other how to hunt us. The robots use Darwinian Selection to decide how to escape each other or work together to avoid collisions.

Video: Meet Palro, Fujisoft’s mini humanoid

Most of the robots we cover on CrunchGear have been built for research or entertainment purposes, but some of them do become available for the general public at some point. And today we can give you the Palro (Pal+robot) [JP], a soon to be marketed humanoid developed by Tokyo-based Fujisoft. • Recyclable mannequin robots

    Recyclable mannequin robots

We have seen mannequin robots already, machines that may sometime replace real models in fashion shows and similar events. Needless to say that the company behind those robots is based in Japan. And it was clear that the first robot maker marketing a new line of robots as "recyclable" would come out of the same country, too. And Osaka-based Eager [JP] is combining both ideas by offering recyclable mannequin robots.
