Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 ‘Rockstar’ contest wraps up, neat apps ensue

The success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competition are finally in. Two of the top three winners were games, and the grand champion was a game by the name of -- wait for it -- "Droid." Members of the team are receiving $8,000 plus a Windows Phone, and while none of these apps are the most polished things in the world, it's a promising sign that these students were able to come in fresh on a brand new platform and produce solid version 1.0 software in less than three months' time. Hit up Microsoft's Windows Blog for the full list of winners.

Video: Short preview of Red Dead Redemption short film

Can we all agree that Red Dead Redemption is one of Rockstar’s finest games? It’s probably one of the best games of this generation, too. A 30-minute short film based on the game, directed by the guy (John Hillcoat) who directed The Road (good) and The Proposition (great), debuts tomorrow night on the Fox network [...]

Video: This is the Red Dead Redemption launch trailer

Once upon a time I heard an EA so-and-so, in a totally unofficial capacity, say something to the effect of “western games never sell.” I guess we’ll find out soon enough with the release of Red Dead Redemption. This is the official launch trailer. Will the game be as big as Grand Theft Auto? Maybe not, [...]

  • Irony: Did Rockstar upload a pirated version of Max Payne 2 to Steam?

Irony: Did Rockstar upload a pirated version of Max Payne 2 to Steam?

Well this is interesting. A person far cleverer than any of us here decided, on a whim, to look at the main executable of the Steam version of Max Payne 2 in a text editor. Because that's what you do, you know? Anyhow, a funny little thing appears: the ASCII logo of famed release group (now defunct) Myth. In other words, it sure does look like Rockstar uploaded a cracked (PIRATED OMG OMG OMG) version of the game to Steam's servers! You can't make this stuff up.

Video: The many multi-player modes of Red Dead Redemption

We’re only a month out from the release of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption, and if there’s anything we’ve learned in our illustrious history is that if it’s Friday, it’s video day here. There’s no writing required and no reading required—everyone wins! Anyhow, today’s Red Dead Redemption video highlights the game’s many multi-player modes. Pretty sure [...]

Red Dead Redemption gets Fox TV machinima special

Quite the push behind Red Dead Redemption, no? The latest is that John Hillcoat, the guy who directed The Road (which I saw the other day—the future looks horrible), has worked on a 30-minute machinima for Rockstar . The short film will air on Fox on May 15. This is a pretty big deal.

  • Yet another violent video game debate (but one that doesn’t demonize games per se)

Yet another violent video game debate (but one that doesn’t demonize games per se)

There was another "are violent video games evil?" debate yesterday, this time on BBC Radio in the UK. (We sure do cover a lot of UK-centric news here, don't we?) A group called Mothers Against Violence, whose goal is the complete eradication of violence (OK...), debated games journalists, the radio show hosts, and the video game industry in general. The debate wasn't as silly as you may automatically think, with the anti-violence group coming down on parents rather than violent video games in general. You know, "Be parents for once!"

PAX East 2010: Clearly Rockstar is a popular company

Rockstar wins the early “which publisher has the biggest line?” award here at PAX. I think they get a free pizza party at the end of the day as a result.

Video: This is what Red Dead Redemption looks like

Oh thank God for Rockstar. We’re short-staffed today, plus it’s nice outside and I’m very easily distracted by the weather, so what better way to pass the time than by watching fancy trailers? Here we have a brand new trailer for Red Dead Redemption, which I do believe a couple of the Ron and Fez [...]

    Look, it’s Red Dead Redemption!

Things are a little bit crazy here today. The biggest problem is that, oh, 40 percent of our posts aren’t posting when we schedule them to. It’s an aggravation that we really all could do without. But moving on, we have a new trailer from Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption. We also have a release date: [...]

Altec Lansing announces Rock Band speakers

Why be a video game rockstar if you can't hear it? Have you always wanted to put your foot on something while you power chord-ed your way to stardom? For those of you who are using the stock speakers in your TV to play Rock Band, Guitar Hero, or Harmonica Hero, first off, shame on you.

Make music: The PSP version of Beaterator is available today. iPhone users have to wait a little while yet.

Rockstar's Beaterator comes out today (and so does Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days... you couldn't find two more different publishers in Rockstar and Square Enix) for the PSP. We've highlighted it in the past because A) Timbaland is one of the better “big name” producers out there and B) I have spent more than a few hours in Ableton Live and the like. It's familiar territory, in other words.

What was one of the biggest house songs of the year 2008? That's right: Eric Prydz's “Pjanoo.” (The Madonna remix is pretty cool, too. I like(d) house music, sue me.) What song is featured in the DEBUT TRAILER! of Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony? That's right, Eric Prydz's “Pjanoo.” Massive props to Rockstar.

Beaterator also heading toward the iPhone (and iPod Touch)

Man, Rockstar is bringing the thunder today. A little bit after dropping word that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars is being developed for the iPhone (and iPod Touch), it also announced that Beaterator would be coming to the iPhone (and iPod Touch). I don't know why (I do that).
